SOCIETY ORAL-HISTORY NS-POLITICS by Dietrich Schubert Though honored as a "Righteous Among the Nations" in Israel and celebrated as a hero in the United States, Hermann Graebe is considered a liar and a traitor in his native Germany. Much like Oskar Schindler, Graebe, a construction supervisor, ultimately came to defend the lives of dozens of his workers in a startling and perilous tranformation from one-time Nazi to rescuer of Jews. As an eyewitness to brutal SS executions and the liquidation ofthe Ukrainian ghetto Sdolbunov, Graebe later provided vital testimony in the Nuremberg trials, invoking bitter persecution from many of his countrymen. To escape the hostility, Graebe moved his family to San Francisco where he lived until his death in 1986 and where his son still lives today. This poignant and well-crafted portrait of a hero without a home is a telling memorial to an individual who chose humanity in face of atrocity. Wie Oskar Schindler hat er zu allen Mitteln gegriffen, um "seine" Juden vor der Erschießung zu bewahren. In Israel und in den USA steht er in hohem Ansehen. Nur in Deutschland galt er lange Zeit als Lügner. Im November 1941 erschoss die SS Männer, Frauen und Kinder in aller Öffentlichkeit. Gräbe war geschockt und beschloss, den Juden zu helfen. Im kleinen Ort Sdolbunov kannte jeder jeden, dort konnte er niemanden verstecken. Also richtete er Baustellen ein, die weit entfernt lagen. "Seine" Leute brachte er selbst mit dem Auto dorthin, sorgte dafür, dass sie bessere Verpflegung bekamen. Und wenn der Auftrag erledigt, die Baustelle eigentlich geschlossen war, ließ er die Geldgeber im Glauben, dass immer noch kräftig gearbeitet wurde. 350 Juden hat er so vor den Nazis retten können. "Manchmal kam er mir vor wie ein zweiter Hauptmann von Köpenick", erzählt Dietrich Schubert, Autor der WDR-Dokumentation "In Deutschland unerwünscht – Hermann Gräbe." "Damit man ihn für einen SS-Mann hält, hat er sich bewusst so angezogen und auch einen dunklen Mercedes gefahren." Wenn er nicht weiterkam, hat er von "geheimen Bauvorhaben" gesprochen und mit Beschwerden an höchster Stelle gedroht." Ein riskantes Spiel: "Im Büro gab es immer welche, die nichts davon wissen durften. Vor einem Polier hatte Gräbe richtig Angst, weil das ein echter Nazi war."

The series, with another thirty in preparation, claims to represent the artistry of the greatest singers from first century of recording. The track selection was made by the late John Ardoin and is somewhat idiosyncratic in the face of the collected treasuries of DG, Philips and Decca. These discs are more than merely sonic CDs but ‘multimedia’, being enhanced for those with ROM facility, to include photo gallery, biographies and texts. If you lack ROM facility you get a booklet with brief essay and track listing, the latter lacking such basic information as to the operatic character singing the aria! The presentation aims to be different and unique, being a cardboard case within a plastic slip case emblazoned ‘The Singers’ Hermann Prey , born in 1929, passed his adolescence in wartime Berlin where he played the accordion and sang in the Mozart Choir. He later contributed lighter fare for the occupying troops. His good voice went along with an attractive outgoing personality and good looks: together these brought offers of a career in popular music. However, it was to the classical repertoire that he turned, making his operatic debut in 1952, after which he sang in all the world’s major opera houses and festivals. His beautiful lyric baritone was admired in Mozart

document.write(""); SCHULTZ, HERMANN His larger operas are marred both by their inordinate length and by their want of dramatic power. The slighter comedies are pretty and tuneful, but, except as curiosities, are not likely to be revived. We may, however, deplore the fate which has deprived the stage of the Rosamunde music. It is in Schubert’s best vein; the entractes, the Romance, and the ballets are alike excellent, and it is much to be hoped that a poet will some day arise and fit the music to a new play. Of his pianoforte compositions, the sonatas, as might be expected, are the least enduring, though there is not one of them which does not contain some first-rate work. On the other hand his smaller pieces. in which the lyric character is more apparent, are throughout interesting to play and extremely pleasant to hear. He developed a special pianoforte technique of his own—not always “orthodox,” but always characteristic. A special word should be added on his fondness for piano duets, a form which before his time had been rarely attempted. Of these he wrote a great many—fantasias, marches, polonaises, variations—all bright and melodious with sound texture and a remarkable command of rhythm. His concerted pieces for the voice are often extremely difficult, but they are of a rare beauty which would well repay the labour of rehearsal. The 23rd psalm (for female voices) is exquisite; so are the Gesang der Geister, the Nachihalle, the Nachtgesang im Walde (for male voices and horns), and that” dewdrop of celestial melody” which Novello has published with English words under the title of “Where Thou Reignest.” Among all Schubert’s mature works there are none more undeservedly neglected than these.
