His six years in Zurich were among the most productive in his career, though he didn't begin the work for which he was best known wave mechanics until 1925. His interest was sparked by a footnote in a paper by Albert Einstein Niels Bohr Werner Heisenberg Max Planck

Austrian physicist

wave mechanics
Erwin Schrodinger (1887-1961) was an Austrian physicist who became famous as the person who first studied wave mechanics. Schrodinger graduated from the Vienna University in 1910 with a degree in physics. He served as an artillery officer in World War I, then moved to teach physics at University of Zurich in 1921.
He replaced Max Planck as the theoretical physics professor at Berlin University but left Germany when the Nazis came to power. He taught at Graz University in Austria, Oxford University and the Dublin Advanced Research Center. He returned to Austria and Vienna University in 1956, where he spent the rest of his life working energetically.
Schrodinger was awarded the Nobel prize
for his work with quantum and wave mechanics
Schrodinger produced equations about undulation that explained the behavior of electrons in atoms. These equations formed the basis of wave mechanics, as well as allowing for the development of quantum mechanics. The advancements he led earned him the 1933 Nobel Prize for Physics.
Schrodinger's research covered fields from basic theoretical physics to theories about space. Schrodinger also made a contribution to molecular biology and the philosophy of biology with his book "What is Life?" which prompted considerable response with its conjectures as to the nature of genetic material.

Erwin Schrödinger 1887 -1961, Nobel Laureate in Physics 1933, was one of the main contributers to quantum mechanics and is most famous for his Wave Equation. The world of physics is a world of shadows, we were not aware of it; we thought we were dealing with the real world....... Subject and object are only one. The barrier between them cannot be said to have broken down as a result of recent experiments in the physical sciences, for this barrier does not exist....... I don't like it, and I'm sorry I ever had anything to do with it.
Erwin Schrödinger This painting was commisioned by the Physics Department in Trinity College Dublin, to be placed outside a lecture theatre named after Erwin Schrödinger. It is was completed using oils on canvas and is approximatley 26 x 40 inches in dimension. I used various body models and archive photographs. I also read Walter Moore's biography 'Schrödinger: Life and Thought' to get to know the man I was painting. Gallery 1 Gallery 2 Gallery 3 Gallery 4 ... Search

75 Years of Schrodinger's Wave Equation in 2001 http://ublib.buffalo.edu/libraries/units/sel/exhibits/schrodinger/e_schro.html The Science and Engineering Library (SEL) presents a CyberExhibit commemorating the 75th anniversary of the publication of Erwin Schrodinger's wave equation; this general equation laid the groundwork for countless advances in the field of quantum mechanics . The SEL virtual exhibit includes a short biography of Erwin Schrodinger, a listing of historical discoveries that contributed to the development of wave mechanics, examples of current applications that rely on the wave equation, a list of browser-viewable Java applets designed to aid in visualizing the wave-function, and a brief compilation of related reference materials available at SEL and other university libraries.

. Erwin's father came from a Bavarian family which generations before had settled in Vienna. He was a highly gifted man with a broad education. After having finished his chemistry studies, he devoted himself for years to Italian painting. After this he took up botany, which resulted in a series of papers on plant phylogeny.
In 1920 he took up an academic position as assistant to Max Wien , followed by positions at Stuttgart (extraordinary professor), Breslau (ordinary professor), and at the University of Zurich (replacing von Laue Peter Debye

In 1936 he was offered a position at University of Graz, which he accepted only after much deliberation and because his longing for his native country outweighed his caution. With the annexation of Austria in 1938, he was immediately in difficulty because his leaving Germany in 1933 was taken to be an unfriendly act. Soon afterwards he managed to escape to Italy, from where he proceeded to Oxford and then to
