Impact of Callinectes sapidus on the Vertical Migration Behavior of Submerged Littoraria irrorata John Tomasheski December 3, 2001 Introduction Littoraria irrorata , the marsh periwinkle, is a light gray gastropod that populates intertidal marshes along the Atlantic shoreline of North America (Henry et. al, 1993). L. irrorata is typically found distributed on the marsh cordgrass Spartina alterniflora (Graca et. al, 2000). The cordgrass environment provides a versatile habitat where many predator and prey organisms thrive. L. irrorata is able to exist in the presence of their predators with a reduced risk of mortality by the development of a heavy shell sculpture, growing to a size above which predator success is limited, or existing in a habitat that is inaccessible to predators, typically the upper portions of S. alterniflora stems (Vaughn and Fisher, 1988). The pattern of vertical migration by a marsh periwinkle on the S. alterniflora has been extensively investigated. Bingham (1972) tested the effects of numerous environmental stimuli on marsh periwinkle migration, including salinity, food supply, substrate elevation, wave action, light, gravity, desiccation, and temperature. Henry et. al (1993) continued to study the correlations between temperature, salinity, and desiccation with the climbing behavior of L. irrorata

The Department of Mathematics until 1960
Recollections by Erik Hemmingsen
It was my intention to write in some detail about the mathematics done by various former colleagues, but the task was obviously too large and too time consuming. Consequently most of my comments have been about people. Undoubtedly, some worthy people have been omitted and some important incidents skipped; but what follows is all that came to my mind when I was writing, except that some incidents could easily have been elaborated tiresomely much. If I had rewritten this account with the purpose of polishing the English usage, it would not only read more smoothly, but it would contain some of the possibly important omissions. Erik Hemmingsen 25 February 2000
When Decker died, the Department inherited his very extensive mathematics library, much of which was eventually sold to buy numerous volumes of journals to fill the holes in the departmental library. [1] (cf. footnotes at the end)

As must always be the case with a work of this kind, the authors have relied heavily on both past and contemporary observers. Amos W. Butler did likewise when he wrote Birds of Indiana, published in 1898. In some ways his task was easier than ours, for there were relatively few regular correspondents sending him information, and he had a much smaller volume of data to organize. On the other hand, because of the dearth of observers, several sections of the state were poorly represented by his published records. We have had the benefit of the unpublished notes and observations of the hundreds of birdwatchers, naturalists, bird banders, trained biologists, and professional zoologists whom we have come to know during the past forty years as well as the mass of published data now available to the birder or ornithologist. We were denied (by our relative youth) the opportunity to know personally most of those who cooperated with Amos Butler. Too many generations have appeared in the interim, and practically all of the old guard is gone (an exception is Henry A. Link, now ninety-nine years old, with whom Mumford became acquainted nearly thirty years ago). These pioneers left their legacies in carefully taken notes, journals, and publications. Unfortunately, the years between our involvement with Indiana birds and that of Butler took their toll of collected specimens (which often graced the households of avid birdwatchers), letters, and other notes which would have proved invaluable to us. We can only marvel that some observers were able to gather so much information, given the constraints of travel, visual equipment, and inadequate identification guides of their day. We salute these early bird-lovers, most of whom are mentioned by Butler in his book.

Introduction
The essential question What of mathematics is American? forces us to explore the content area as it applies to what America has contributed to the world of mathematics. When considering measurements, our nonconformity to the metric system as a nation compels us to understand the reasons why the largest nation of the free world would not align itself to the rest of the trading nations. An investigation of NASA will provide us with how, as an agency, this organization involves mathematics that can be called its own. The field of economics looks to John Nash and his contributions to the concept of equilibrium and game theory, and finally the engineering marvels of our bridges and road systems has long been looked at by the world for its design and mathematical exactness.
Let us now embark on an exercise designed to enable you to discover what truly is American when it comes to the field of mathematics. Enjoy your journey.

This paper reports on the export benefits that SMEs obtain from ISO 9000 certification. Based on a survey of certified SMEs located in Northern Ontario, the study is guided by a conceptual framework composed of (1) the external environment; (2) the internal environment, including management beliefs and knowledge; and (3) the strategic posture of the firm. Survey findings reveal three export profiles.
Introduction Northern Ontario has many successful small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Many of these firms were initially established to meet the demands of the local market, and may remain dependent on the natural resources industries (mining and forestry). The cyclical nature of the resource industries and the growing pressures of global competition give cause for concern (Jankowski and Moazzami, 1993). Exporting is viewed as the appropriate strategic response, but SMEs need a competitive advantage appropriate for wider markets. Trade journals and consultants claim that ISO 9000 gives SMEs international recognition and entry to export markets. However, these claims remain unconfirmed. This study reports on a Northern Ontario survey that attempted to answer the following question: Do SMEs use their ISO certification for export purposes, and if so, with what effect?

UC Berkeley Awards
The Berkeley Medal
The Medal is an honor separate and distinct from all other Berkeley awards; in rare cases it may be bestowed on recipients of the Berkeley Citation. The Medal may be awarded to any notable figure except those then holding elective public office in California or nonacademic University appointments. Anyone on or off the campus may nominate an individual for the Berkeley Medal, stating the reasons for the nomination. Different aspects of the nominee's career should be documented by a minimum of three separate letters of recommendation. The nomination should be addressed to the Chancellor (c/o University Events and Ceremonies), who will forward it to his Advisory Committee on Honors. The committee will then review the qualifications of the nominee and send its confidential recommendation to the Chancellor, who has the authority to accept or reject the recommendation and to select an appropriate occasion for presentation of the approved award.
