It was a time of great suffering and [1]:- differential equations and was awarded his PhD in 1935. Before completing his doctoral studies he married Miriam Knott in 1934. They would have one daughter and one son. The Asymptotic Solutions of Certain Linear Differential Equations in Which the Coefficient of the Parameter May Have a Zero Wilks at Princeton where a statistics team had grown up. Having retrained as a statistician, he began a second career as a university teacher, but this time he taught statistics rather than mathematics. He was on the Faculty at Syracuse in session 1944-45, and at University of California at Los Angeles from 1946 until 1948. Immediately after leaving Los Angeles he was appointed to Columbia University where he became chair of the statistics department. Neyman Pearson theory of best similar test.

Born: 11 April 1907 in New York, USA Died: 5 July 1977 in Berkeley, California, USA studied pure mathematics at the University of Wisconsin receiving his BA in 1931. He wrote a doctoral thesis on differential equations and was awarded his PhD in 1935. His doctoral dissertation The Asymptotic Solutions of Certain Linear Differential Equations in Which the Coefficient of the Parameter May Have a Zero His research was influenced by certain consultancy positions he held such as one at the Office of Scientific Research and Development from 1943 to 1946. He also studied other aspects of analysis of variance such as paired comparisons which he studied in 1952, then mixed models studied two years later. In 1958 and again in 1963 he published on experiments on mixtures and in 1973 he wrote on calibration methods. The Analysis of Variance (1959). He was in the middle of a revision of this book when he died as the result of a bicycle accident.

Comité Galego do Ano Mundial das Matemáticas 2000 O persoeiro da semana Semana do 3 ó 9 de xullo Henry Scheffé Naceu o 11 de abril de 1907 en Nova York e morreu o 5 de xullo de 1977 en Berkeley, California. Fillo de emigrantes alemáns Scheffé pasou a súa infancia entre bastantes necesidades económicas. Licenciouse en Matemáticas en 1931 e presentou a súa Tese de Doutoramento en 1935 sobre ecuacións diferenciais. Scheffé impartiu clases de matemáticas puras entre 1935 e 1940 na Universidade de Wisconsin e na Universidade do Estado de Oregón. En 1941 desprazouse á Universidade de Princeton onde comeza a traballar en estatística xunto con Wilks, pasando despois polas universidades de California, Columbia e finalmente en Berkeley, onde permanece máis de vinte anos. Os seus traballos como consultor para diversos organismos influenciaron moito as súas investigacións que se centraron en modelos lineais, onde estudiou métodos para a obtención de intervalos de confianza simultáneos, afondou nos modelos mixtos e investigou sobre métodos de calibración. Foi Presidente do International Statistical Institute e Vicepresidente da American Statistical Association.
