by Edward Lear

On the Coast of Coromandel
Where the early pumpkins blow,
In the middle of the woods
Lived the Yonghy-Bonghy-Bo.
Two old chairs, and half a candle, -
One old jug without a handle, -
These were all his worldly goods:
In the middle of the woods,
These were all the worldly goods, Of the Yonghy-Bonghy-Bo, Of the Yonghy-Bonghy-Bo. Once, among the Bong-trees walking Where the early pumpkins blow, To a little heap of stones Came the Yonghy-Bonghy-Bo. There he heard a Lady talking, To some milk-white Hens of Dorking, - "'Tis the Lady Jingly Jones! On the little heap of stones Sits the Lady Jingly Jones!" Said the Yonghy-Bonghy-Bo

Form in Language: Grammatical Processes
The question of form in language presents itself under two aspects. We may either consider the formal methods employed by a language, its "grammatical processes," or we may ascertain the distribution of concepts with reference to formal express ion. What are the formal patterns of the language? And what types of concepts make up the content of these formal patterns? The two points of view are quite distinct. The English word unthinkingly is, broadly speaking, formally parallel to the word reformers, each being built up on a radical element which may occur as an independent verb (think, form), this radical element being preceded by an element ( un- re-) that conveys a definite and fairly concrete significance but that cannot be used independently, and followed by two elements (-ing, -ly; -er, -s

habet and ad and Indo-European ei respectively. If language is a structure and if the significant elements of language are the bricks of the (25) structure, then the sounds of speech can only be compared to the unformed and unburnt clay of which the bricks are fashioned. In this chapter we shall have nothing further to do with sounds, as sounds. The true, significant elements of language are generally sequences of sounds that are either words, significant parts of words, or word groupings. What distinguishes each of these elements is that it is the outward sign of a specific idea, whether of a single concept or image or of a number of such concepts or images definitely connected into a whole. The single word may or may not be the simplest significant element we have to deal with. The English words sing, sings, singing, singer

BROTHERS Edward and Alex Van Halen were born in Holland and moved with their family to Pasadena, California, as children. Although both were trained as classical pianists, it was pop music that interested them most. Originally, it was Alex who played guitar, and Eddie who played drums. But while Eddie was out delivering newspapers, Alex would practice on his drums, and soon he had superseded his brother's ability. Not to be outdone, Eddie decided to switch to guitar. Mike and Eddie After high school, the brothers played in various cover bands, and in the process, rented equipment from an Indiana native named David Lee Roth, who sang in a local band called the Red Ball Jets. As Eddie had never aspired to be a singer, he convinced Roth to join his band, which they then dubbed Mammoth. One particular gig found the band sharing a bill with Snake, which led to a meeting and jam session with Snake's bass player and singer, Michael Anthony. Impressed, the Van Halen brothers and Roth asked Anthony to join their band. In late 1975 or early 1976, the group discovered that there was another band called Mammoth, and while several other names were suggested, the quartet decided to use Eddie and Alex's last name, Van Halen. Van Halen's self-titled first album endures as a testament to the group's vision, and set the standard for which a new generation of hard-rocking bands would strive. Although the rhythm section was solid, it was the combination of David Lee Roth's flamboyant, sultry vocals and Eddie Van Halen's guitar playing that gave the record its shape and vast appeal. Roth strutted as much as he sang, his lyrics brimming with libido ("Feel Your Love Tonight"), braggadocio ("Atomic Punk"), and mayhem ("Running With the Devil"). And the metal edge they gave to a cover of the Kinks' "You Really Got Me," immediately distanced Van Halen from the sixties supergroups that were still dominating rock radio.

Edward Higginbottom
London; Spitalfields
The Choir of New College Oxford has a worldwide reputation through its recordings (over 70 CDs in the catalogue) and concert tours (the USA, Australia, much of Europe and even Brazil). At the same time it is still recognisably what the founder of New College, William of Wykeham, envisaged in the fourteenth century: a choir of sixteen choristers and a dozen or so clerks whose duty was, and still is, to provide a sung liturgy in the grandest chapel to be built in Oxford. The tradition of singing at New College goes back to 1379 when the College was founded. The sixteen boy choristers of the foundation have remained constant in number to this day. The adult singers are now drawn from the College (academical clerks) and from the city (lay clerks). The singing of daily choral evensong is the primary function of the Choir during University terms, and provides the raison d'être for the Choir's continued existence into the twenty-first century. In addition to the Choir's reputation as one of the world's leading boys choirs, its work offers a first-class training to the young singers who pass through its ranks not only because of the quality of the training but also because of its association with one of the great universities of the world.

Talking With God
by Alan Radding
The first Seder had been awful. Edward didn't like matzah and he said so. "This stuff is like cardboard. Do we really have to eat this junk all week?" He thought the whole idea of a Seder, the special Passover meal, was stupid, all the ritual this and symbolic that. The Four Questions that children are expected to recite were really stupid. Nobody ever really reclines when they eat. They'd choke. Then there was all the stuff about opening the door for Elijah and the cup of wine. "Hey, doesn't this remind you of putting out milk and cookies for Santa Claus?" he suggested. Nobody laughed at his joke. "You remind me of the wicked child in the Haggadah," said his uncle Robert, referring to the rebellious child in the Passover story. Uncle Robert then went into some spiel about how special it was to be Jewish and a chain linking us all the way back in history. Then he threw in the Holocaust. Whenever adults want you to feel bad about not feeling Jewish, Edward thought, they bring up the Holocaust. So, here they all are at the second Seder and nothing has changed. More aunts and uncles and cousins pour into the house. Everyone raves about the food-brisket and turkey, tsimmes and potato kugel-but Edward would prefer pizza or spaghetti, even a bagel. Edward is still feeling like the wicked child. "Don't spoil it for your younger brothers and sisters and everyone else," his father warned.

January 2002) Student Advisor's Corner Happy New Year to all of our international students, and a hearty welcome to the 12 who joined us this semester from Jamaica, France, Sweden, Australia, Nigeria, Japan, and Finland. Our numbers are increasing and we look forward to more participation and fun this new year. A lot happened at the Centre while you were away on holidays. We had to say goodbye to a number of people. Firstly, to Bruce Caldwell, Director of the International Centre, who left for Halifax to be with his family. Then, to Li Sha, our post-graduate student from China, who left for Simon Fraser University. Dinithi Weerasinghe had left for Sri Lanka to complete the second semester there, and will be back to UPEI for the Fall. During our Christmas party, we bade farewell to some of our Exchange students : Daniel Buzaglo, Jason Chan, Kathryn Boyd, Monika Larson, Merryn Pinch, Alexandra Pages, and Celine Berthon. Many of these students participated actively in the affairs of the International Centre, and we miss them dearly. We wish them well in all their future endeavors.
In the absence of Bruce, Maureen and I are carrying on the work of the Centre, until a more permanent arrangement is made by the university authorities. Meanwhile, I report to Mr. Bob Gibson, Director of Student Services.

BONTOS - Volume 25
There are specific forms of poetry like Limericks, Haiku and the Malaysian Pantun. Each of these have a very formal structure as to number of lines, meter, syllables etc. The meaning is often also tightly prescribed - especially the Pantun. The Bonto is a new formal type of poetry for use on the net.
There are four lines in each poem.
Rhyming is aa bb.
Syllables: as yet undecided (5, 6 or 7)
Content:
  • First line: sets out some extraordinary behaviour. The more bizarre the better. Second line: gives the explanation for the bizarre behaviour. Third line: gives the result or outcome of the behaviour. Fourth line: provides some "philosophical" reflection on life in general but arising from the situation.
