Some call me Big Ben, or Ol' King, or Shorty, or Slim—perhaps some few call me other names unmentionable—Well, two years ago I met a girl, two years last night—but with the present War situation, I've been unable to follow the dictates of my own wishes in seeing the miss. Despite the passing time and the changing scene, I continue to anticipate reunion. Should you meet the girl, convey to her my thoughts, my hopes and wishes for days ahead. Her name?—Howard, Lee Howard, the only one on Buncombe Rd." Thus wrote Candler, N.C., native Benjamin Gaston Cole in a V-mail letter dated 13 February 1945. Cole's whimsical greeting is but one item among a collection of three hundred ninety-one World War II letters, V-mail messages, and photographs, 2 March 1943 - 30 January 1946, sent by the U.S. Army Air Corps lieutenant, later captain, to a young Greenvillian whom he had met while stationed at Donaldson Air Base. A detailed multi-page letter written on 21 May 1945, once censorship restrictions had been lifted, reveals that Cole was sent to Camp Kilmer, N.J., preparatory to sailing on 8 July 1943 aboard the

A while back the question was asked as to the method used in the era of the Napoleonic wars to measure muzzle velocity. Prior to the 18th century the most widely used theory to explain ballistics was Galileo's vacuum or parabolic trajectory theory. Unfortunately this theory did not consider the effect of air resistance on ballistics. Galileo's theory was valid for heavy mortar shells fired at low speeds but he admitted that it was too inaccurate for high-velocity shots. After Galileo many of the great natural philosophers and mathematicians attempted and failed to solve the problem of a projectile moving through a resisting medium. Benjamin Robins, an English mathematician born in Bath in 1707, eventually solved this fundamental problem of ballistics. In the 1730's Robins, a member of the Royal Society, began a study of fortifications, hydraulics and ballistics. Blocked by political differences from a professorship at the recently established Royal Military Academy, Robins was spurred to publish his

Robins Family This Page Updated 27 Jan 2002 Aaron Williams ' wife Charity Nation descended from the Robins family. Her earliest known Robins ancestor was Daniel Robinson from Scotland, who settled first in New Haven, CT, and then moved south to Monmouth Co., NJ. In Monmouth Co. were two "unrecorded" ROBINS wills. These give us additional children for Joseph Robins , our ancestor, and six additional children for his supposed father Daniel Robins from Blair Athol, Scotland, New Haven, CT, and Croswekes, NJ. Daniel did not name his son J oseph , born 3 Dec 1670 in NJ, who married Anna Pack in Woodbridge, NJ, 8 Jun 1692. Joseph and wife Anna Pack were the great- grandparents of both parents of Aaron Williams' wife Charity Nation (Joseph Nation and Jerretta Vickery). The will of Joseph ROBINS who died 1709 in Monmouth Co., NJ, named children, apparently young, and his wife was pregnant with another child. Daniel and Joseph's land bordered each other. Benjamin Robins, the British mathematician, proved in 1746 that air resistance was a critical factor in the flight of projectiles. His apparatus consisted of a whirling arm device in which weight (M) turned a drum and rotated the test object (P). In the early 1800s, George Cayley devised the whirling arm as a way to measure the drag and lift of airfoils. George Cayley used a whirling arm to get the data he needed to design his first glider. Hiram Maxim built an "air blast apparatus for measuring the lift and drift of aeroplanes and aerocurves. " The First Wind Tunnels Beginning in the mid-1700s, hopeful airplane designers realized that, if they were to build aircraft that would fly, they needed to understand how air moved over aircraft surfaces. Although they observed birds and tried to pattern their aircraft after bird flight, these aircraft uniformly failed. Bird flight did not provide the data they needed. They recognized that, to get the necessary data, they had two choices: they could move their test aircraft through the air at the required velocity or they could blow air past a stationary model. The whirling arm was early researchers' attempt at the first method. The English mathematician Benjamin Robins used a whirling arm in his experiments in 1746. Robins mounted variously shaped objects on the tip of the arm and spun them in different directions. He found that the shape of the object seemed to affect the air resistance, or

William Partridge, 1788-1812 Cullum #18. In the USMA Cadet Application Papers (Microfilm reel 688-2) William Partridge is listed as 1805/4. He was a student at Dartmouth before West Point, in fact a member of the senior class. John Smith, Professor of the Learned Languages at Dartmouth certified in a letter of September 18, 1805 that Partridge "is a young gentleman of pure morals, and reputable acquirements in Literature." These early letters almost always refer to the candidates moral character, and almost never to any mathematical preparation, although there are exceptions. Died September 20, 1812 at Detroit, MI, at age 24. He was a cadet at USMA from December 13, 1805 (the day after Alden Partridge arrived) until October 30, 1806 when he was graduated and promoted to Second Lieut., Corps of Engineers (Alden Partridge graduated and was promoted to First Lieut., Corps of Engineers the same day). On October 17, 1806 he was examined and, together with Alden Partridge, they were "the best Mathematicians in the Academy." Need to find out if they were related. Served at West Point, 1807.
