's father was a surgeon. He studied at the Oratorian College in Angers. In October 1676 he entered the Maison d'Institution in Paris where he met Malebranche In 1682 Reyneau was appointed professor of mathematics at the University of Angers. However, in 1705, he had to give up teaching as be became deaf. He had been going deaf for a number of years but he managed to keep his post by having former students give his lectures for him. After giving up the struggle to continue his job in these difficult circumstances, Reyneau went to Paris and lived at the Oratorian house there for the rest of his life. This was a time when there were major new mathematical ideas coming through the work of Johann Bernoulli and being brought into France through and others. For many years Reyneau was not really abreast of these new developments, even when Johann Bernoulli visited Paris in 1692 and Reyneau did not rush to keep up to date with the important new ideas.

Ramus and Ramism became associated with 'method.' His opposition to blind belief in authority and his support in the belief that the right thinking would be confirmed by the physical world makes Ramus a unique forerunner of both Bacon's empiricism and Descartes' rationalism. He turned to astronomy late in his career. He urged a return to the observational astronomy of the Babylonians and Egyptians in an attempt to determine the nonhypothetical, directly observable regularity of the heavens. Later, Kepler would claim to have met Ramus' demands.

Charles Drew began his pioneering work with blood plasma during his tenure as the first black surgical resident at the Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. Because of his concern about the difficulties involved in transporting and correctly matching highly perishable blood, Drew took the preservation of blood's properties and the uses of plasma in postoperative work as his field of research. In 1940, Drew received a cablegram from Dr. John Beattie, then director of the research laboratories of the Royal College of Surgeons in London, asking him to secure five thousand ampules of dried plasma for transfusion, to be used for the ever-increasing numbers of wounded British citizens and soldiers. Within a short time, Drew had organized the Blood Transfusion Association to send plasma to Britain, and the crisis in war-torn England's hospitals was averted. A year later, Drew became medical director of the American Red Cross's blood-donor project, and it was largely thanks to his expertise that so many lives were saved during World War II. Drew left the Red Cross shortly after the organization ordered that all non-Caucasian blood be stored separately, and he returned to his former teaching position at Howard University and Freedmen's Hospital. In 1944, Drew received the NAACP's Spingarn Medal for his work on the British and American blood and plasma projects. On April 1, 1950, while on his way to a medical conference at Tuskegee, Drew was killed in an automobile accident in North Carolina.

Martin, Benjamin Biographia Philosophica Being an Account of the Lives, Writings, and Inventions of the Most Eminent Philosophers and Mathematicians . Distributed for the Thoemmes Press. 1764 Edition. 567 p. 5-3/8 x 8-1/2 2002 Cloth CUSA $140.00tx 1-85506-973-3 Spring 2002 Benjamin Martin (1704-82) came from a family of Surrey farmers and seems to have received little in the way of formal education. However, he taught himself mathematics and astronomy, and in time became an accomplished inventor and maker of scientific instruments. He was also a keen disciple of Newtonon whose physics he gave public lecturesas well as a considerable philosopher of language. Martin published many books on these various subjects, but his chief ambition as a writer was nothing less than to provide a synopsis of all scientific and philosophical knowledge in a grand fourteen-volume series. Martin only ever completed five of these projected booktwo on philology, two on mathematics, and the Biographia Philosophica This rare little encyclopaedia contains entries detailing the lives and works of 157 people, from Thales and Euclid in antiquity to Sir Isaac Newton and Dr Nicholas Saunderson in Martin's own century. Typically, an entry will begin with biographical information and then move on to a critical assessment of its subject's work, 'digested according to the Order of Time in which they lived'. Sometimes, a bibliography is given in conclusion. As was usual in his era, Martin construed the term 'philosophy' broadly enough to include the sciences as well as abstract thought.
