Although Helena Rasiowa was born in Vienna, her parents were Polish. In 1918 Poland regained its status as an independent nation and Rasiowa's parents moved to Warsaw. She was educated there, obtaining a good secondary school education with music lessons taken at a special music school. After completing her school studies she took a course in business management before entering university. Rasiowa entered the University of Warsaw in 1938 but, after the German invasion of Poland in 1939, the university closed. Rasiowa and her parents moved to Lvov but the Poles were trapped between the Soviets and the Germans and Lvov came under Soviet control. Life there seemed even more difficult than under German occupation, so after a year the family returned to Warsaw. There was an impressive collection of mathematicians at the University of Warsaw at this time including Borsuk Lukasiewicz Mazurkiewicz Sierpinski ... Mostowski and others. They had organised an underground version of the university which was strongly opposed by the Nazi authorities.

Helena Rasiowa began the study of mathematics at the University of Warsaw in 1938. During the second world war she continued these studies at the Underground University. In 1944 she wrote a master's thesis under the supervision of Jan Lukasiewicz. In 1945 she received the M.Sc. degree and in 1950 the Ph.D degree from the University of Warsaw. Andrzej Mostowski was the supervisor of her Ph.D dissertation. She held academic positions at the University of Warsaw from November 1945 till June 1992. She served as the head of the Section of Foundations of Mathematics (1964-1970) and the head of the Section of Mathematical Logic (1970-1992). She was the dean of the Faculty of Mathematics (1958-1960, 1962-1966, 1968-1978). Helena Rasiowa was the author of more than 100 papers in the area of mathematical logic and theoretical computer science, and of the books ``The mathematics of Metamathematics'' (with Roman Sikorski), ``Introduction to Modern Mathematics'' and ``Algebraic Approach to Non-Classical Logics''. She was the founder and the editor-in-chief of the journal Fundamenta Informaticae , collecting editor of Studia Logica and associate editor of the Journal for Approximate Reasoning She received numerous prestigious honors and awards, among others the Sierpinski medal, the title of Honorary Member of the Polish Mathematical Society, the Polish Mathematical Society ``Stefan Mazurkiewicz'' Award and the First Class State Science Award in Mathematics. She served as the president of the Polish Mathematical Society Warsaw Division (1957-58, 1963-64). In the Association for Symbolic Logic she was the Council member (1958-60) and the Executive Committee for European Affairs member (1972-77). In the International Union of History and Philosophy of Sciences, Division of Logic, Methodology and Philosophy of Science she was the alternate assessor (1972-75) and the assessor (1975-79).

Report on AWISE Meeting held in London on 31st October 1994
In March 1994, a group of female scientists in the UK decided to form a group tentatively called the Association of Women In Science and Engineering (AWISE). I attended one of the first formal meetings of this group on October 31st 1994. Those present at the meeting included representatives of several existing groups, including representatives from Women in Physics, Women in Engineering (WiE), Gender and Mathematics Association, Women in Technology in Europe and Women Chemists' Committee. Dusa McDuff and I attended as self-elected representatives of women in maths. The meeting was chaired by Dr. Anne McLaren of the Royal Society. One of the first issues to be raised was that of the name and role of the organisation. Objections to the current name were received from the Engineering Research Council (who run a programme for school girls called WISE) and from the president of the UK Women in Engineering (who felt that female engineers were already well-represented by WiE). It was decided that another name should be chosen, reflecting the ``science'' aspect of the body rather than engineering. As to the role of the organisation, it seems that there is a need for an umbrella organisation to bring together the existing ``Women in ....'' groups in the UK as well as a society to which individuals can belong. A constitution along these lines is being drawn up.

On the contributions of Helena Rasiowa to Mathematical Logic
    by Josep Maria Font
    Multiple-Valued Logic, an International Journal, 4 (1999) 159-179
    Abstract
After an overview of the main fields of mathematical logic where Rasiowa made significant contributions, the author analyzes with some detail the philosophical basis of Rasiowa's approach to the study of mathematical logic and the main technical points that characterize her contributions. In particular, it is shown that theses contributions are grounded on three key ideas of major Polish logicians, namely: (1) Lindenbaum's idea of treating the set of formulas as an abstract algebra. (2) Mostowski's idea of interpreting quantifiers as infinite conjunctions or disjunctions in the (ordered) set taken as model. (3) Tarski's idea of defining a logic in general as a finitary closure operator on the power set of the set of formulas, completed by Los' and Suszko's notion of "structurality" (invariance under substitutions). These ideas and Rasiowa's own constructions are described in their historical context.

The atmosphere was easy-unlike that in a standard conference-and the long span of the meeting gave one a lot of scope for academic interaction. Quite a few participants were close associates/students of Rasiowa, and so during conversations, one caught glimpses of the great personality as well. It was a privilege to be a part of the assembly and also, to present our work on rough logic that follows Rasiowa's style of investigation. The participants were accommodated either at the Banach Center, or hotels of the University of Warsaw, and the organizers took great care to see to the comfort of each one (in particular that none froze!). In general too, considering the extremely hard time that the Polish are going through, one was amazed at the warmth exuded and help extended, even by the common person on the street. Among the audience, we had a number of bright young students (Polish, and others), shooting questions, and enjoying the proceedings. I remember a nice evening with some of them, trudging through the ice to a concert at the renowned Chopin School of Music, and then being amply rewarded by the concert itself-three well-performed piano concertos by students of the School. We also had long exchanges about the problems in our countries, specially those in the academic spheres. There did not seem to be many differences.
