George Polya's Four-Step Problem-Solving Process
1. What, exactly, is the problem? What details are important? What are the limitations on the solutions? Why is this situation a problem?
2. List all possible solutions. For each, give the possible good and bad points of the solution.
3. Choose a solution.
4. Check it out. Does it make sense? Does it work?
If it doesn't work, go back to one of the previous steps and try again.

November/December 1995 Vol. 13 No. 6 Polya's Four-step Process
"A great discovery solves a great problem but there is grain of discovery in the solution of any problem. Your problem may be modest; but if it challenges your curiosity and brings into play your inventive facilities, and you solve it by your own means, you may experience the tension and enjoy the triumph of discovery." Much, if not all, of genealogy involves problem solving. Genealogy is more than a mere accumulation of names and dates; it is the pursuit of information and the answering of questions. It is the challenging and often frustrating nature of genealogy that makes it rewarding, whether it is discovering an unknown maiden name or an undocumented parentage. Much research and study has been done on problem solving and the problem-solving process, but most of this research has been applied to non-genealogy areas (which is where I was first exposed to it). While the pursuit of genealogy is fundamentally different from physics or accounting, each of these disciplines requires problems to be solved. Genealogists can benefit from the problem-solving strategies that have been developed for other fields of research.

The Random Walks of George Polya
Series: Spectrum
In the first half of this charming book Gerald Alexanderson, presents a insightful portrait of George Polya, the great teacher. In the second half of the book, Alexanderson assembles eight papers that describe Polya's contribution to various fields.
George Polya enjoyed the esteem of the mathematical community not only for his deep and influential contributions in a variety of mathematical fields, but also for his groundbreaking work in the teaching of mathematics. His standing in the latter area could rest solely on his having written one of the most widely read books in mathematics, the still-popular How to Solve It. Various other books were almost equally influential, however: Mathematical Discovery and Mathematics and Plausible Reasoning, to name but two.
In addition to his championing problem-solving, he contributed to mathematics important results in complex and real analysis, inequalities, mathematical physics, combinatorics, probability theory, number theory and geometry. He coined the phrases "random walk" and "central limit theorem" and gave to mathematics the Polya

The Undergraduate Collection
Math Library General Information The Undergraduate Collection was a collection of classical mathematics books covering the history of mathematics, assembled by Professor Halsey L. Royden and Rebecca Lasher Wesley in the late 1980's. Professor Donald E. Knuth recommended additional books in the mathematical and computer sciences. At the time, Prof. Royden felt that all students of mathematics should become familiar with these works before they left Stanford. They are shelved in the book stacks by call number, and may sometimes be identified by a narrow (not round) bright green strip on the book's spine.

Reviews Book Description This perennial best seller was written by an eminent mathematician, but it is a book for the general reader on how to think straight in any field. In lucid and appealing prose, it shows how the mathematical method of demonstrating a proof or finding an unknown can be of help in attacking any problem that can be "reasoned" outfrom building a bridge to winning a game of anagrams. Generations of readers have relished G. Polya's deftindeed, brilliantinstructions on stripping away irrelevancies and going straight to the heart of the problem. Let epsilon be smaller than zero.
A mathematician, a biologist and a physicist are sitting in a street cafe watching people going in and coming out of the house on the other side of the street. First, they see two people going into the house. Time passes. After a while, they notice three persons coming out of the house. The physicist: "The measurement wasn't accurate." The biologists: "They have reproduced". The mathematician: "If now exactly one person enters the house then it will be empty again." A conjecture both deep and profound Is whether a circle is round.

Study Habits
You may have heard by now that in order to do well in your university math studies, you should plan on about 15 hours of work outside of class. Keep in mind this is an average based past student experience with this course. Some of you will have to put in more than 15 hours per week in order to keep up with the class. This means that it is very important for you to make a work schedule for every hour you are awake, every day of the week! Time management is crucial for your success. Here are 10 additional points for you to consider in your quest for excellence:
  • Learn to listen for the key concepts in your lectures.
  • Study as soon after your lecture as possible. Your objective is to have all your homework done before the next lecture!
  • Study no more than an hour at a time. That is, try not to study three or four hours straight! Work no more than an hour, then take a ten or fifteen minute break, come back and study another hour, break, etc.
  • Study the subject you find most challenging first.

The Four-step Problem-solving Process
George Polya described the experience of problem solving in his book, How to Solve It , p. v:
A great discovery solves a great problem but there is a grain of discovery in the solution of any problem. Your problem may be modest; but if it challenges your curiosity and brings into play your inventive facilities, and if you solve it by your own means, you may experience the tension and enjoy the triumph of discovery. As part of his work on problem solving, Polya developed a four-step problem-solving process similar to the following:
  • Understanding the Problem
  • Can you state the problem in your own words?
  • What are you trying to find or do?
  • What are the unknowns?
  • What information do you obtain from the problem?
  • What information, if any, is missing or not needed?
  • Devising a Plan
The following list of strategies, although not exhaustive, is very useful:
  • Look for a pattern.
  • Examine related problems and determine if the same technique can be applied.
  • Examine a simpler or special case of the problem to gain insight into the solution of the original problem.
  • Make a table.

At present, there is no course in the Mathematics Department which focuses on process rather than the mathematical content. B. The course is intended to provide a foundation in the processes of problem solving which will be useful as a preparation for other courses in mathematics. C. The course is needed to provide a forum for students to develop their own problem solving style, and to assume a leadership role in problem solving. D. The course is needed to meet the program requirements to prepare mathematics teachers for secondary schools. E. The course is a requirement in the K-9 math extension program. III. Major Objectives of the Course A. To concentrate on the process of problem solving rather than the content and to use and internalize problem solving processes. B. To develop the student's confidence and originality in problem solving in mathematics.
