Louis Poinsot attended the school of Louis-le-Grand in Paris. He sat the entrance examination of the Ecole Polytechnique in October 1794 but he performed poorly in the algebra assessment, which he failed. Despite this poor performance in one part of the entrance examinations, Poinsot was accepted for admission to the Ecole Polytechnique. Delambre had been appointed treasurer to the Imperial University in 1808, holding the position until 1815. Poinsot took on another appointment, in addition to the one with the Imperial University, when he accepted the position of assistant professor of analysis and mechanics at the Ecole Polytechnique on 1 November 1809. We should say a little about how someone like Poinsot, who had not really made a great success of his education, had moved from school teaching into higher education in the way that he did. The reason is that Poinsot had been very active in mathematics even while he was supposed to be studying for an engineering qualification. He had published a number of works on geometry, mechanics and statics beginning with in 1803 and following this with [1]:- ... memoirs that dealt with the composition of moments and the composition of areas , the general theory of equilibrium and of movements in systems , and polygons and polyhedra

    POINSOT, LOUIS
His brother, Lucien Poincaré (b. 1862), famous as a physicist, became inspector-general of public instruction in 1902. He is the author of La Physique moderne (1906) and L’Electricité (1907). Jules Henri Poincaré (b. 1854), also a distinguished physicist, belongs to another branch of the same family. POINSOT, LOUIS (1777—1859), French mathematician, was born at Paris on the 3rd of January 1777. In 1794 he became a scholar at the École Polytechnique, which he left in 1796 to act as a civil engineer. In 1804 he was appointed professor of mathematics at the Lycée, in 1809 professor of analysis and mechanics, and in 1816 examiner at the École Polytechnique. On the death of J. L. Lagrange, in 1813, Poinsot was elected to his place in the Académie des Sciences; and in 1840 he became a member of the superior council of public instruction. In 1846 he was made an officer of the Legion of Honour; and on the formation of the senate in 1852 he was chosen a member of that body. He died at Paris on the 5th of December 1859. Poinsot’s earliest work was his Elémens de statique (1803; gth edition, 1848), in which he introduces the idea of statical couples and investigates their properties. In the Théorie nouvelle de la rotation des corps (1834) he treats the motion of a rigid body geometrically, and shows that the most general motion of such a body can be represented at any instant by a rotation about an axis combined with a translation parallel to this axis
