Glass Blowing and Glass Silvering
Student Projects Glass Making
Introduction
Background
This experiment is new to the Chemistry and Art 108 Course at the University of the South. The authors, Gabriel Hargrove and Hunter Kaller, are the first to attempt glass blowing and silvering. Glass was first found in Earth as obsidian, a naturally occurring volcanic glass. Silvering also has long been used to produce both mirrors and attractive glass items. When applied to flat glass, the result is a standard mirror. When applied to a curved piece of glass, the result is a curved mirror, commonly seen as a security mirror. Undulations in the glass can produce "funhouse mirrors," or mirrors with irregular distortions. These distortions are unfavorable, so the bubbles we will silver should be as regular and spherical as possible. The following is a brief timeline and history of glasswork. -1700 B.C. Glass manufacturing is established in Syria -2450 B.C. An excavation of a Mesopotamian Cemetery unearths a great many glass beads. -1450 B.C. Egyptians create beautiful glass vases with a sand armature. Trails of hot glass are wrapped around a "sand core" that determines the shape of the vessel.

In the heavy mantle of long brown hair covering the fore-quarters of the old males, i Aeschylus died there in 456 B.C. with the exception of the bare chest, which is rèddishflesh-colour, the gelada recalls the Arabian baboon (Papio hamadryas), and from this common feature it has been proposed to place the two species in the same genus. The gelada inhabits the mountains of Abyssinia, where, like other baboons, it descends in droves to pillage cultivated lands. A second species, or race, Theropithecus obscurus, distinguished by its darker hairs and the presence of a bare flesh-coloured ring round each eye, inhabits the eastern

1) ATOMY

Corresponding portions of a National Television System Committee (NTSC) image (top) and a high-definition television (HDTV) image are shown. An HDTV image contains more than two million picture elements (pixels) and is approximately six times the spatial resolution of current NTSC images. HDTV employs a 16x9 aspect ratio, compared to A lthough no single person or invention can be credited with the development of television, the so-called electronic hearth of today has its roots in the 1817 discovery of light-sensitive selenium by Swedish chemist Jöns Jakob Berzelius. By 1881, silhouettes were transmitted using selenium and a scanning phototelegraph device. However, there was a growing desire to transmit sound with moving images. Defining the Standards The National Television System Committee (NTSC) set the standard for color television broadcasts in the United States. In 1951, the color system developed by Hungarian-American engineer Peter Goldmark was tried, but it was incompatible with the 525-line broadcast standard established in 1941. The color system selected by the NTSC in 1953 was compatible with existing black-and-white sets, and it inserted the color signal information inside the black-and-white signal. In 1960, Japan also adopted the NTSC system. The former Soviet Union and France adopted the SECAM system (syste`me électronique couleur avec mémoire) in 1967, which transmits 625 lines at 25 frames per second with less color distortion than the NTSC system. Today, there are no less than fifteen broadcast standards around the world.
