Acquired in 1936 In 1454 Angelo di Giovanni di Simone d’Angelo ordered from Piero a polyptych for the high altar of S. Agostino in Borgo Sansepolcro. The commission specified that this work, undertaken to fulfill the wish of Angelo’s late brother Simone and the latter’s wife Giovanna for the spiritual benefit of the donors and their forebears, was to consist of several panels with “images, figures, pictures, and ornaments.” The central portion of the altarpiece is lost, but four lateral panels with standing saints — St. Michael the Archangel (National Gallery, London), St. Augustine (Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga, Lisbon), St. Nicholas of Tolentino (Museo Poldi-Pezzoli, Milan), and the present panel have survived. Although the venerable figure in the Frick painting was given no identifying attributes, he is presumed to represent St. John the Evangelist, patron of the donors’ father and of Simone’s wife. Evidence from a payment made to Piero in 1469 suggests that the altarpiece was finished late that year, fifteen years after the original contract. The lengthy delay resulted no doubt from Piero's many other commitments during this period, when he traveled to towns all across Central Italy and contracted obligations to patrons more important

Great Masters: Piero della Francesca Part 3 of 9: Series of programmes examining the work and influence of nine great painters from the Renaissance and Baroque
Broadcast times 17 Feb 2003 Mon 7pm-7.35pm
18 Feb 2003 Tue 2pm-2.35pm
Piero della Francesca (1410/20-1492) was one of the supreme artists of the quattrocentro. He was an artist that strived for the communion of science and art, through the application of mathematics to the composition of a painting.
This harmony between geometry and art is visible in the 'Baptism', one of Piero's early works. Although the technical and linear execution is perfect in his paintings there remains something strangely mysterious and ephemeral about them, like the figures are suspended in space. This obsession with exact measurements leaves little to the imagination. However, conversely, this makes his pictures calming and beautiful.
Piero was taught by Domenico Veneziano who he inherited the linear style from and he had met Alberti, the expert on perspective in the early 15th century. Piero's students included Perugino and Signorelli.
This programme discovers the secret behind Piero's paintings and how he applied mathematical theories to canvas.

Piero Della Francesca
By Jannie Ngo Piero della Francesca was an Italian Cinquecento painter who was born in Florence perhaps around the town of Sansepolcro in about 1420. He also died at Sansepolcro in 1492. The documentary sources about Piero's life is quite scanty, the most reliable contemporary source is probably Vasari's "Life of Piero" in his famous compilation of the "Lives of the Painters, Sculptors, and Architects" published about a century later after his birth in 1550 and 1568. Piero della Francesca's early life and childhood seemed typical of many Italian families who were becoming prosperous with various trading or merchant ventures. His father, Benedetto de' Franceschi was "a tanner and shoemaker" who became successful enough to allow Piero be "well educated and literate in Latin". Though after these auspicious beginnings in academic life, little is known about Piero's early training as an aspiring painter. Most scholars would assume that he followed the conventional route and "was instructed by local masters who had been influenced by Sienese art". Then, Piero's artistic career seem to have begun on a very high note when in 1439 he worked as an associate (or apprentice) of Domenico Veneziano, who was then painting frescoes for the hospital in Florence. Here, in Florence, Piero was exposed first hand to the flourishing of the early Renaissance style and the cultural richness of the big city. There he probably studied the statuary of Donatello and Luca Della Robbia, the buildings of Filippo Brunelleschi, and the paintings of Masaccio and Fra Angelico. He could have also read the theoretical treatise on painting by the Humanist and architect Leon Battista Alberti. Thus this was a tremendous period of learning and absorption of this fomenting Renaissance notion of humanism and more "realistic" types of paintings.

Arezzo: in search of Piero
A very ancient city (founded, according to legend, by Greeks in the year 2557 after the creation of the world), Arezzo is built on a mass of rock at the meeting of four valleys: the Casentino, the upper Valdarno, the Valdichiana and the upper Valtiberina. In the fifth century BC it was one of the twelve cities of the Etruscan League dominating central Italy. Under the Romans, Arezzo became an important center for traffic passing both on the north-south and on the east-west axis; it marked the confluence of major Roman roads such as the Flaminia minor (from Bologna), the Cassia (from Florence) and the Riminensis (from Rimini). As a traditionally Ghibelline city Arezzo was often in conflict with Guelf Florence. It flourished, especially in the 15th century under the lordship of the Tarlati, and maintained its prestige in Medici times when its medieval fabric received important renaissance additions. The city contributed significantly to the artistic and cultural life of the Tuscan Grand Duchy, with, among others, the artist and biographer Giorgio Vasari (1511-74); the botanist and physician Andrea Cesalpino (1519-1603), famous for his studies on the circulation of the blood; and Francesco Redi (1626-98), the celebrated man of letters and naturalist. Although there has been much construction in modern times, particularly just after the Second World War, Arezzo has managed to keep its historic center fairly intact, and deserves to be visited for at least a long weekend. Try if possible to time your visit for the first Sunday of the month so as to catch one of the most important antiques markets of Italy: the town will be seething with visitors, but it is a unique experience to explore the old streets and squares of Arezzo crowded with antiques of all kinds, paintings, statues, furniture, and there are plenty of bargains to be had.

One of the great artists of the early Italian Renaissance, Piero della Francesca painted religious works that are marked by their simple serenity and clarity. He was also interested in geometry and mathematics and was known for his contributions in these fields. Although the date and place of Piero della Francesca's birth are not definite, it seems likely that he was born in about 1420 in Sansepolcro, Italy. His father was a well-to-do tanner and shoemaker, and Piero's varied accomplishments indicate that he received a good education. He probably studied painting with one of several skilled artists of the Sienese school who lived in Sansepolcro. By 1439 Piero was working with Domenico Veneziano on frescoes for the hospital of Santa Maria Nuova in Florence. His experience and contacts in Florence, where he would have seen the works of such sculptors, artists, and architects as Donatello, Brunelleschi, Masaccio, and Fra Angelico, had a profound influence on Piero's style. Piero was skilled in perspective, and his paintings are also known for the care with which he rendered the landscapes that provide the backgrounds for his figures. Throughout his life he maintained his ties with Sansepolcro, but he traveled widely.
