The scenes of the Golden Legend are numbered according to the sequence of the story (Nos. 1-9 on green background). The frescoes not related to the Golden Legend but added by Piero for decoration are also shown (Nos. 10-15 on yellow background). The unnumbered parts of the wall contains frescoes executed by Bicci di Lorenzo (frescoes on the vaulted ceiling and two Doctors of Church on the underside of the entrance arch) and the assistants of Piero. Introduction Our study of the past depends in no small part on the tools at our disposal. The latter half of the nineteenth century saw the emergence of a new attention to the theoretical sources of art. Critical in this regard was the monumental series Source Books for Art History and Art Technique Quellenschriften für Kunstgeschichte und Kunsttechnik ) edited by Eitelberger von Edelberg. This brought new editions of Alberti and Leonardo da Vinci as well as first editions of Filarete and Piero della Francesca. These editions led to new attention to details concerning the methods of Renaissance linear perspective. A series of mainly Austrian and German scholars: Ludwig, von Oettingen, Staigmüller and Janitschek drew attention to two different methods. Erwin Panofsky established the standard view of these two chief methods of Renaissance perspective: the legitimate construction ( costruzione legittima ) and the distance point construction ( Distanzpunktverfahren ). Nella città di Arezzo la visita può avere inizio nella Basilica di San Francesco, chiesa gotica la cui costruzione risale al XIV secolo. La cappella Maggiore ospita il ciclo affrescato della Leggenda della Vera Croce, il capolavoro che l’artista compie ad Arezzo tra il 1452 e il 1466. Dopo la visita alla Basilica si procede verso la Cattedrale, costruzione gotica realizzata tra la fine del XIII e la metà del XVI secolo. In fondo alla navata sinistra, quasi nascosto dalla grande scultura trecentesca del cenotafio del vescovo Guido Tarlati, è visibile l’affresco raffigurante la Maria Maddalena (1460 ca).
