    Piero della Francesca's Polyhedra
Piero della Francesca (1410(?) - 1492) was an outstanding 15th century Renaissance artist , both a mathematician and a painter. His genius in developing the new methods of perspective and employing them in his paintings has withstood the centuries. However, his well-deserved mathematical reputation was lost and only has been regained in this century. That loss was largely due to the fact that Pacioli plagarized Piero's major writings shortly after Piero's death, incorporating them into his published books without attribution. For centuries, the mathematical contributions of Piero were questioned. However, three of Piero's mathematical manuscripts were discovered in the early 20th century, and his reputation regained. Piero is the first of a series of artists whose geometric explorations involved the gradual rediscovery of the Archimedean solids . He rediscovered the five Archimedean solids which are truncated Platonic solids : the truncated tetrahedron truncated octahedron truncated cube truncated dodecahedron , and truncated icosahedron . These were presumably known to Archimedes, but that was not known in Piero's time. In addition, he rediscovered the

Piero della Francesca Long neglected, Piero della Francesca is now regarded as one of the greatest Renaissance painters - perhaps we needed Cezanne and Cubism to teach us to appreciate his perfect use of form and colour. Born sometime between 1410-1420, he remained faithful to his native town of Borgo San Sepolcro (modern day Sansepolcro in Umbria) for the rest of his life despite travelling afar. In 1442 he was made a member of the Priori (town council), a post he retained until his death. His earliest known painting is the Madonna della Misericordia at Sansepolcro but like many of his works it took years to complete; it was ordered from him in 1445 for delivery in three years but was finally paid for some 17 years later. A master of the impersonal, his mathematical clarity and absence of sentimentality produced images whose spiritual depth still confounds us. Always seeking to redraw the boundaries of art, he was also a great theorist and wrote two of the most important treatises of his time on perspective. The last record we have of him painting was in 1478 but he lived on until 1492 - tragically, blindness seems to have blighted his last years. To follow a pilgrim's trail of his works - yes, yes, we know only Urbino is in the Marche - visit the Uffizi in Florence to see his famous twin portraits of Federico da Montefeltro and Battista Sforza, Arezzo for his great fresco cycle of

Painter of Borgo San Sepulcro, 1410/20 - 1492 He was regarded as a great master of the problems of regular bodies, both arithmetical and geometrical...he has justifiably acquired the reputation of being the leading geometrician of his day "Because of his accomplishments both as a mathematician and a painter..he was employed by Guidobaldo da Montefeltro, the earlier duke of Urbino, for whom he made many very beautiful panel pictures with little figures.." PIERO DELLA FRANCESCA
Perspective was the main focus of the work of this painter, among the most prolific of the Renaissance "Diptych of the Dukes of Urbino" probably dates from about 1465; the "Virgin of Senigallia" at the Gallery of Urbino, from about 1470, and the "Virgin and Child with angels and saints and the Duke Federico da Montefeltro", at Brera Art Gallery, from 1472-74. In these pictures a pervasive light shines on the faces and the settings, giving a kind of symmetrical perfection to the compositions. His last work seems to have been the "Nativity" (1475), now at London's National Gallery. He died in 1492. Return to Room Index

Piero della Francesca
A fine example of early experiments in art-critical film by Carlo Ragghianti. It examines the work of this very individual master who was perhaps the first to exploit the subduing and soothing qualities of light. His ability to endow the world with majesty and calm has never been surpassed.

Piero della Francesca was one of the most original men of the renaissance. Piero had two passions - art and geometry - the very things that this course is dealing with. He carried these on at the same time and, we will try to show here, how he integrated the two. Luca Pacioli (c.1445-1517) was a renowned mathematician, captivating lecturer, teacher, prolific author, religious mystic, and acknowledged scholar in numerous fields. He was a link between the Early Renaissance of Piero and the High Renaissance of Leonardo. Leonardo (1452-1519) is considered by many the ultimate renaissance man, skilled in mathematics, philosophy, civil and military architecture, engineering, painting, sculpture, science, music, invention, and the design of weapons. We'll consider Leonardo in our next unit. These three Renaissance men were linked as student to teacher; Piero taught mathematics to Luca, and Luca taught Leonardo. They are also linked by the Platonic solids.

The Geometry of Piero della Francesca
by Mark A. Peterson is the cover article of the Summer 1997 issue of The Mathematical Intelligencer. The cover shows a detail of "The Flagellation of Christ" by Piero, one of the greatest painters of the Italian Renaissance. In addition to his unassailable reputation as a painter, Piero has long been considered a kind of "mathematician," largely because Giorgio Vasari, writing in the mid 1500's, said he was. Until the 20th century, however, there was no firm evidence on this point. The belated discovery of three manuscript books by Piero changes the picture completely. It has taken almost another 100 years for people to begin to look at these books as serious works of mathematics.
The article describes the kind of mathematics to be found in Piero's work. It is far beyond anything his contemporaries were doing, meaning that Piero was not just among the great painters of his century, he was without question the greatest mathematician of the 1400's. The article is available in preprint form as a gzipped Postscript file (5 figures + text).
