Emile Picard 's father was the manager of a silk factory who died during the siege of Paris in 1870. The siege was a consequence of the Franco-German War which began on 19 July 1870. It went badly for France and on 19 September 1870 the Germans began a siege of Paris. This was a desperate time for the inhabitants of the town who killed their horses, cats and dogs for food. It was during this siege that Emile's father died. Paris surrendered on 28 January 1871 and The Treaty of Frankfurt, signed on 10 May 1871, was an humiliation for France. ... learned it by heart in order to avoid being punished. Hadamard wrote in [8]:- As any young Frenchman of our time who was gifted in science, he was obliged to choose between the Ecole Polytechnique which, in principle, prepared one to be an engineer, and the Ecole Normale, with its pure scientific orientation. He was ranked first and chose the latter. It is said that he made this decision after an exciting visit to Pasteur, during which the father of bacteriology spoke about pure science in such lofty terms that the young man was completely persuaded. Charles Emile Picard (18561941) Picard attended the École normale superieure and as a student enjoyed mountain climbing and traveling. He taught at the University of Paris and at the Sorbonne. His method of successive approximation was used to show the existence of solutions of differential equations . Picard continued the study of surface integrals begun by Abel and Riemann . Picard applied his mathematics to applications in physics, elasticity, electricity, and heat conduction. Picard married Hermite's daughter and helped published many of Hermite 's works.

    Emile Picard
Emile Picard He was born Charles Emile Picard on July 24, 1856 in Paris, France. When Picard was 22 years of age, he was appointed lecturer at the University of Paris. One year later, he obtained the position of professor at the University of Toulouse. In 1898, he became a professor at the Sorbonne in Paris. In 1901, he was awarded the Fellow of the Royal Society. He married Hermite's daughter. Their daughter and two sons were killed in World War I and later on, his grandsons were wounded and captured in World War II. With Georges Simart, Picard published a two-volume work called Theorie des fonctions algebriques de deux variables independantes in 1897 and then in 1906. Picard contributed to mathematics in the following ways:
    • in the field of analysis and analytic geometry
    • utilized methods of successive approximation to show the existence of solutions to ordinary differential equations
    • study of topology
    • study of integrals
    • study of algebraic geometry
    • applied analysis to the study of elasticity, heat and electricity.
Emile Picard died in his birthplace on December 11, 1941.

    Charles Emile Picard
Charles Emile Picard's contributions to mathematics have been overshadowed by the horrifying accounts of his family history. His two sons and his daughter were killed in World War I while his grandsons were taken captive during World War II. During his 85 years of life Picard made important contributions to the fields of analysis and analytic geometry. For example, by using methods involving successive approximations, Picard was able to show that solutions to ordinary
differential equations existed. Picard also further developed the work of Riemann to relate the study of integrals to algebraic geometry. Picard co-authored Theorie des fonctions algebriques de deux variables independantes 2 vol. (1897, 1906) with Georges Simart. It is also significant to point out that Picard married Hermite's daughter and was elected to the Royal Society of London in 1909. Author : Filiberto Barajas References:

    19. Picard, (Charles) Emile
picard, (Charles) emile (18561941). French mathematician whose work wasmainly in the fields of mathematical analysis and algebraic geometry.
    http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/P/Picard/1.html
Picard, (Charles) Emile French mathematician whose work was mainly in the fields of mathematical analysis and algebraic geometry. He formulated two theorems on integral functions. He applied mathematical principles as much as possible to other branches of science, particularly physics and engineering.
Picard's 'little theorem' states that an integral function of the complex variable takes every finite value, with one possible exception. In 1879 he expressed it in this way:
Let f(z) be an entire function. If there exist two values of A for which the equation f(z) = A does not have a finite root, then f(z) is a constant. From this it follows that if f(z) is an entire function that is not a constant, there cannot be more than one value of A for which f(z) = A has no solution.
This was followed 1880 by Picard's 'big theorem':
Let f(z) be a function, analytic everywhere except at a where it has an essential isolated singularity; the equation f(z) = A has in general an infinity of roots in any neighbourhood of a. Although the equation can fail for certain exceptional values of the constant A, there cannot be more than two such values.
Picard's work on the integrals attached to algebraic surfaces, together with the associated topological questions, developed into an area of algebraic geometry that had applications in topology and function theory.
