Subject: A Great Little Book
SIAM has just republished a great little book. It is "Numerical
Analysis: A Second Course" by Jim Ortega. It does not describe
numerical methods but the book gives the fundamental ideas behind
numerical mathematics. It should be required reading for all graduate
students in scientific computing.
The book is in paperback and the cost to SIAM members is about $20.
You might try ordering it by e-mail (na.siam@na-net.stanford.edu will
work). Gene Date: Tue, 27 Feb 90 15:03:03 +0100 Subject: Oskar Perron Are there any people out there who can tell me something or give references about the life (and work) of Oskar Perron (who wrote the beautiful "Die Lehre von den Kettenbruechen")? Thanks in advance. Please send to:

Arnold Sommerfeld,
Return to Postal Services August 14 Dear Mum and Dad, Oskar says I should discuss my optional choices with you. I want to take healing, for extra credit, and study spell craft with old Wishtwind. He says he can recognize any spell at forty paces, and I would really like to know what's going to hit me before it does. He says my curiosity will either get me killed or promoted, and he won't commit himself to likelihoods. But on the other hand, as dad always says, a little extra information never queered a deal. I'll tell you more about the other faculty next letter, because I'm running out of parchment. We don't actually see the other faculty much, they teach the upper courses and a lot of them take students on field trips. Next year we're going on a field trip to the End Of The World during Spring Term. S. Tosscobble always grins when we ask him about it, but scuttlebutt has it that I'll be home late for Spring Term next year. It's funny though, the upper class is always very tightlipped about what's coming up next. Your loving son

They occur in spectral problems (quantum chaos), number theory and also unexpectedly in certain probability problems related to random growth and random tilings. I will give some background and then concentrate on the last topics. Onsdagen den 16 oktober, kl. 13.00-14.00 talar Professor Michael Solomyak, Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot, Israel, On the spectrum of the Laplacian on metric graphs Sammanfattning: A metric graph is a graph whose edges are viewed as line segments of positive length, rather than just pairs of vertices. The Laplacian on such graph is the operator of second derivative on each edge, complemented by the Kirchhoff matching conditions at vertices. The spectrum of the Laplacian can be quite different, reflecting geometry of a given graph. Recent results on this subject will be reported. The most detailed results concern a special case of graphs, namely the so-called regular trees.

    Historical and Bibliographical Overview
Integrals and derivatives were already known before Newton and Leibniz. Those two mathematicians are generally credited with inventing Calculus around 1670 because they developed its Fundamental Theorem i.e., that areas are essentially the same thing as antiderivatives. Later, Cauchy investigated the integrals of continuous functions. Still later, Riemann refined the definition that Cauchy had been using, and investigated the integrals of discontinuous functions. The Riemann integral is simpler to define than any of the other integrals discussed below, and it is the "standard" integral that we teach to undergraduate students. Still, it is more complicated than the antiderivative, and it seems to be beyond the understanding of many undergraduate students. The theory of the Riemann integral was not fully satisfactory. Many important functions do not have a Riemann integral even after we extend the class of integrable functions slightly by allowing "improper" Riemann integrals. Moreover, even for integrable functions, it is difficult to prove good convergence theorems using only the tools ordinarily associated with Riemann integrals. A pointwise, bounded limit of Riemann integrable functions is not necessarily Riemann integrable. (For instance, since the rationals are enumerable, the characteristic function of the rationals can be represented as the pointwise limit of a sequence of characteristic functions of finite sets.)
