    Federal Pell Grant
A Federal Pell Grant does not have to be repaid. Pell Grants are awarded only to undergraduate students who have not earned a bachelor's or professional degree. (A professional degree would include a degree in a field such as medicine, law, or dentistry.) For many students, Pell Grants provide a foundation of financial aid to which other aid may be added. How do I qualify? To determine if you're eligible financially, the U.S. Department of Education uses a standard formula, established by Congress, to evaluate the information you report when you apply. The formula produces an expected family contribution referred to as the EFC number. You will receive a Student Aid Report in the mail that contains this number and will tell you if you're eligible. How much money can I get? The maximum award for the 2002-2003 award year (July 1, 2002 to June 30, 2003) is $4,000.

PageTitle = "Financial Aid OfficeUnderstanding the Award Letter"; ContactEmail = "finaid@jwcc.edu"; document.write(PageTitle); Search JWCC Considering JWCC? About the College Campus Community In general, John Wood Community College computes your award based on the information you provided on the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). The federal government determines how much a typical family is expected to pay toward a college education. The Federal Methodology considers money that students and parents earned in the prior year and family assets at the time the student applies for aid. Some specific factors that colleges consider when awarding financial aid include:
    • Cost of attendance
    • Family income
    • Family size
    • Number of family members in college at the same time
    • Family assets
    • Scholarships or grants not received through the school.
After the John Wood Financial Aid Office receives your processed record from the Department of Education, we will send you an award letter. This letter will indicate any Federal Pell Grant eligibility you have and will provide the annual amount if you attend full-time. To find the amount for one semester, divide the annual amount by 2, unless you are in a three-term program (LPN or Ag Center), in which case you would divide by 3 instead. If you will take less than 12 credit hours in one semester, your Federal Pell award will be prorated to match your enrollment status. In most cases you can determine this new amount by multiplying the annual amount by 75 percent for 9 to 11 credit hours and 50 percent for 6-8 credit hours. An example follows to illustrate this calculation.

John Paul II on the identity and goals of the Institute in the new century including the establishment of a Melbourne campus
    Foundation President, Dr George Pell
Dr George Pell In July, 2001, the John Paul II Institute for Marriage and Family will open its doors to the students of Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. The Institute will provide a full range of degrees, ranging from one-year graduate diplomas to higher research and course work degrees in the areas of marriage, family and bio-ethics.
Working in conjunction with the John Paul II Pontifical Institute for Studies of Marriage and the Family around the world and with the University of Notre Dame in Perth, the Melbourne Institute will provide theological and pastoral training for priests and religious, teachers, catechists, pastoral workers, nurses and physicians, and lay people interested in deepening their understanding of the issues touching marriage, family and the culture of life in our world today. The Holy Father has made very clear his desire that the Melbourne Institute should serve not just Australia, but the Catholic population of the whole region. This goal is shared not only by myself, but also by the bishops of Australia.
The John Paul II Institute in Melbourne makes available to our region for the first time a superb body of expertise on marriage, family and bio-ethics. The Director of the Institute, Very Reverend Father Anthony Fisher, O.P., is himself internationally recognised as a leading expert in these areas and under his leadership the permanent faculty of the Institute will be complemented by visiting lecturers from Asia and the Pacific, Europe and the United States. In this way, the Melbourne Institute will serve our region as an important resource for the Church and the people she serves.

This time last week ABC National's Encounter programme (23/10/02) broadcast a lecture called "God and life in modern religious thought" given recently in Tess Livingstone's city of Brisbane by Cambridge theologian and cleric, Don Cupitt. Cuppitt's line was that organised religion is dead and with it the God of religions with their dualisms between Creator and creation, God and man, this life and the next. Life , here and now, is all there is: the new paradigm for Western spirituality is to be a 'solar ethic', modelled on the sun, which simply burns itself out in living for the moment, never longing for anything else, never looking to any other time or person for inspiration. The church of the future, he predicts, will have "no orthodoxy, no organisation, no hierarchy", it will be "simply a free experimental religious society in which people can let their hair down and think what they really think".
Happily not every voice hailing from Brisbane at the moment is quite so 'solar'. Tonight we celebrate a rather different vision of Faith and Church, as told in the life of a great churchman and in the ink of an excellent Brisbane biographer. Most of us will never have a biography written of us, except that most important one recorded in the Book of Life. A few here will perhaps have a printed record distributed after they've died or not long before. Rare indeed is it for a man of 61, just entering his prime, to have already had a life worthy of a biography. Tess Livingstone has demonstrated that George Pell is such a man.

As high school seniors head for the homestretch and look forward to a summer off before college, Congressman John Tierney has stepped up his work with his colleagues on the House Committee on Education and the Workforce to keep college affordable for all American families. “A quality college education is the cornerstone of the American dream,” said Tierney, New England’s sole representative on the Committee. “A college degree opens the door to job opportunity and professional fulfillment. Over a lifetime, a college degree is worth $1 million in increased earnings. Education is a partnership among federal and state governments and families. Our challenge here in Congress is to do our part to make the American dream affordable for all families.” “As a practical matter,” he said, “that means strengthening federal policies that provide adequate support for assistance like Pell Grants while zealously guarding against any attempt to increase interest rates on student loans, often the only means of college affordability for hard-working middle-class students.” “Congress should substantially increase the federal investment in student aid,” Tierney said. “Yet the White House budget for fiscal year 2003 trims the principal need-based student aid program - Pell Grants - by 100,000 students and would allow a maximum grant that is $300 below what is needed just to keep up with inflation. That is not good public policy. When the House debates education appropriations, I will fight to restore needed funding for Pell grants in the federal budget.”
