Archbishop of Sydney

E-mail message to Archbishop George Pell, 28 December 2000
Your Grace,
First of all, may I offer you a very Holy and Merry Christmas and my best wishes for the forthcoming year.
I wish to advise that I have posted to my personal web-site (http://members.tripod.co.uk/jloughnan/index.htm) the following files:
http://members.tripod.co.uk/jloughnan/weave.htm entitled "Oh What A Tangled Web They Weave"
This deals with three particularly nasty web-site and The Sovereign Order of St John Of Jerusalem, all of which denigrate the pope, bishops in union with him, the liturgy of the Church, and the laity who adhere to the Church.
I have associated a second file with the above, but have also given it its own identity. It is located at http://members.tripod.co.uk/jloughnan/weave2.htm and is entitled "Some Churches Not In Union With Rome Which use "Catholic" or "Roman Catholic" In Their Name, and Some Sedevacantists and Catholics Not In Obedience To Pope John Paul II"

STORIES From SUSSEX John Pell of the School Book John Pell
To Steyning's grammar school came John Pell. He married the daughter of the founder, but should be remembered in every school in England for his invention of the sign of division.
Every time we make the sign for division we are unconsciously quoting John Pell, a mathematical genius who gave the world little more than this symbol. He was born at Southwick in 1611, and admitted to Trinity College, Cambridge, at 13. Study was a passion with him; he graduated B.A. at 17, became master of Greek, Latin, Hebrew, Arabic, Italian, French, Spanish, and Dutch, and was famous as a mathematician.
He was appointed by Cromwell Envoy to the Protestant Swiss Cantons, which it was desired to detach from France, and for six years be laboured without much success, returning to find Cromwell at the point of death. At the Restoration he was presented to the rectory of Fobbing, in Essex.
Such was the benevolent simplicity of his character, however, that he was shamelessly imposed on by his tenants and relatives. He had a wife and eight children, but for all his talent and learning he had not enough practical wisdom to keep himself in comfort.

The genus Protorhus (Anacardiaceae) consists of one African species and fifteen Malagasy species. The morphological features that distinguish these two geographically segregated groups of taxa are so striking that many botanists have questioned their placement within the same genus. They differ mainly in style and fruit characteristics. In this study, morphological data as well as DNA sequence data from both the chloroplast and nuclear genomes (trnL, trnL-trnF spacer, ITS, ETS) were used to investigate the generic affinities of the species currently recognized in Protorhus . The data indicate that P. longifolia (Bern.) Engl., the African species, is far removed from the Malagasy species clade, which is sister to the genus Ozoroa Del. Because

IU expert says proposed funding for federal Pell Grants remains too low
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. The federal government's education budget proposal for 2004 continues to shortchange the Pell Grant program, according to Edward St. John, a higher education policy expert in the Indiana University School of Education, who said Indiana is one of the few states with success in addressing this situation. President Bush has proposed an increase in spending on Pell Grants for the next fiscal year of $1.9 billion to a total of $12.7 billion, but with no change in the Pell maximum of $4,000 per student. The Pell Grant is the primary federal need-based student grant program. "The Bush administration has fallen short of its goal of treating Pell as a priority when it fails to increase the maximum amount available to students," said St. John, who issued a report through the IU Education Policy Center last May that was critical of the Pell program. St. John said then that U.S. Department of Education research has overlooked the key role of finances, in particular the role of need-based student aid, when analyzing the causes of disparity in college access. This action, which could be corrected through increasing the student Pell maximum amount beyond $4,000, has left more than 1 million college-qualified, low-income and minority students behind, he said in the report.
