Anna Johnson was the daughter of Swedish immigrants who came to the United States about 10 years before Anna was born. When she was nine years old the family moved to Akron, Iowa where Anna attended private school. In 1899, at the age of 16, Anna entered the University of South Dakota where she showed much interest in mathematics. The professor of mathematics, Alexander Pell, recognized her talents and helped persuade Anna Johnson that she should follow a career in mathematics.
In 1904, Anna received her first of two master degrees at the University of Iowa, on linear differential equations. Then A second master's degree from Radcliffe was awarded in 1905. Wheeler was then awarded a fellowship to study for a year at Göttingen University. There she attended lectures by David Hilbert and Felix Kline. It was here that she worked for her doctorate. However, instead of completing her doctorate she married her former mathematics professor, Alexander Pell, and went to the United States. There she taught courses in the theory of functions and differential equations.
In 1908, Anna Pell returned to Göttingen where she completed the work for her doctorate but, after a disagreement with Hilbert, she returned to Chicago, where her husband was now on the university staff, without the degree being awarded.

JUNE 10, 2002 Life, love and loss in the Virginia mountains By ANNA WENTWORTH,
ROANOKE.COM REVIEWER Lee Smith's " Fair and Tender Ladies " has been transformed into a haunting folk opera and given a lovely production at the Theater at Lime Kiln in Lexington. Rebecca Baldwin plays Ivy Rowe from childhood to the age of 74, as she looks back on her life from the porch of her rustic cabin high in the hills. Baldwin moves from youth to age, back and forth convincingly, and creates in Ivy Rowe an unforgettable character. Monica Lijewski portrays Ivy's sister, Beulah; a family friend, Geneva; and other minor characters. Thomasin Savaiano is Ivy's favorite sister, Silvaney, who is sweet but was disabled by a childhood illness. Savaiano also takes on other roles in the show. The three musicians who sing us through the story also play many small roles throughout, filling in as necessary as a variety of characters. They are Mark Thomas Baczynski, Jenna Sokolowski and Trenton Wagler. Although there are only five people involved in the production, the talented cast and director make us feel like we have met many more.
