Anna Johnson Pell Wheeler Written by a 9th Grade Student at the High School of Commerce A year later after receiving a scholarship to study for her masters degree at the University of Iowa, she was awarded the degree for a thesis The Extension of Galois Theory to linear differential equations. In 1905 a year later, she received a second a masters degree from Radcliffe where she remained there to study under Bocher and Osgood two famous teachers of mathematics at Radcliffe. A few years later, Anna was awarded the Alice Freeman Palmer scholarship from the Wellesley College to study at Gottingen University for a year. She worked for her doctorate at Gottingen and while she was there,Alex Pell, one of her former mathematics professors, met her there and married. In 1908 Anna went back to complete her work for a doctorate. But she was a little upset because she was not awarded the degree when she returned to Chicago. In Chicago she later became a student at Eliakim Moore, where she received her Ph.D. in 1909 Anna Johnson Pell Wheeler was an important woman, because she was the first woman to give the Colloquium Lectures at the American Mathematical Society Meetings in 1927.

Monthly E-Newsletter Sign Up Timely Topics National Education Reform: One Year Later One year ago on January 8, 2002, the President signed the No Child Left Behind Act , H.R. 1 into law. This bipartisan bill signaled a historic renewed federal commitment to the education of our country's children and I was proud to vote for the bill. The legislation authorized $24 billion dollars for elementary and secondary education to advance class size reduction, technological improvements, school improvements, as well as the training of teachers and salary enhancements. On the first anniversary of this historic legislation, there isn't much to celebrate. The President's proposed budget severely cuts back the funding promised in the No Child Left Behind Act and it represents the lowest increase in education funding in 7 years, a 2.8% increase.(click here to view a chart on funding levels) Specifically, I'm extremely disappointed that the President's budget falls short on fully funding special education, a commitment made by the federal government in 1975. The proposed level of IDEA funding is less than half of what is needed to adequately support special education programs which affect over 6 million disabled children in America. The President has also proposed cutting back Pell Grants and eliminating the Federal Perkins Loan Program completely. Without funding H.R. 1, the reforms cannot be implemented. It's critical that we keep our promise to invest in the education of our children and that we make the

Died: March 26, 1966, Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, USA Anna Johnson was the daughter of Swedish immigrants who came to the United States about 10 years before Anna was born. When she was nine years old the family moved to Akron, Iowa where Anna attended private school. In 1899 she entered the University of South Dakota where she showed great promise in mathematics. The professor of mathematics, Alexander Pell, recognised her talents and helped persuade Anna Johnson that she should follow a career in mathematics. She received an A.B. degree in 1903. After winning a scholarship to study for her master's degrees at the University of Iowa, she was awarded the degree for a thesis The extension of Galois theory to linear differential equations At Chicago she became a student of Eliakim Moore and received her Ph.D. in 1909, her thesis Biorthogonal Systems of Functions with Applications to the Theory of Integral Equations retired, becoming a full professor in 1925.
