Charles S. Peirce
Charles Sanders Peirce (1839-1914) was an American philosopher, logician, and scientist. Today, he is primarily known as the founder of pragmatism, and as the developer of a fertile theory of signs and sign-action. He is also recognized as a central figure in modern logic and the methodology of science. Peirce pursued a systematic approach to philosophy, using his phenomenological theory of three basic categories ("Firstness", "Secondness", and "Thirdness") as a guiding principle. The influence of the categorial approach can be seen throughout Peirce's thought, in his cosmological and theological speculations as well as in his logical and semiotic theories. Yet, Peirce's philosophy possesses a remarkable vitality and flexibility, which explains how it can act as a starting-point and source of inspiration for contemporary inquiries in such different fields as aesthetics, communication theory, and the study of artificial intelligence.
Peirce was born on the 10th of September, 1839, in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His father was Benjamin Peirce, a renowned mathematician, and an influential man in the scientific community of his day. As a consequence, Charles became acquainted with the practice of science early in life. He worked for many years in the U.S. Coast Survey (after 1878 known as the Coast and Geodetic Survey), and made several important contributions to various fields (e.g. to geodesy, metrology, astronomy, and psychology). Still, his primary passion was philosophy and logic (both in the sense of formal logic and in the broader sense of logic as

Charles S. Peirce

The Philosophy Guide Peirce's Life
Charles Sanders Peirce
1839-1914 A.D.
Charles Sanders Peirce (pronounced PURSE), the philosophical founder of pragmatism, was born in 1839 in Cambridge, Massachusetts. His father, Benjamin Peirce, was a distinguished Harvard mathematician and astronomer.
"When I was a babe in philosophy," he wrote, "my bottle was filled from the udders of Kant," whose Critique of Pure Reason Peirce studied for three years as a teenager. He studied at Harvard University from 1855 until he received his M.A. in 1862 and lectured there on the philosophy of science in 1864-5. He also worked as a scientist for the U.S. Coast and Geodetic Survey for thirty years, from 1861 to 1891. The ideas presented in William Jame's paper "Philosophical Conceptions and Practical Results" and in James' whole philosophy deviated so much from Peirce's, that he re-named his ideas from "pragmatism" to "pragmaticism", a name, Peirce said, "which is ugly enough to be safe from kidnappers."
In 1871, he founded, along with William James, and future Supreme Court Justice Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr., "The Metaphysical Club", whose purpose was to allow its members, the cream of Boston intellectuals, to discuss their philosophical ideas. (The organization's name was partly a joke since its members generally did not consider metaphysics a valid field of study.)

Charles S. Peirce
PEIRCE, Charles Sanders (1839-1914), American philosopher and physicist, born in Cambridge, Mass., and educated at Harvard University. In 1861 Peirce was appointed to the U.S. Coast Survey. Between 1864 and 1884 he lectured intermittently on logic and philosophy at Johns Hopkins and Harvard universities, and in 1877 he became the first American representative to the International Geodetic Congress. In 1861 Peirce began a series of experiments with pendulums that contributed greatly to the determination of the density and shape of the earth, and also an investigation of the measurement of light waves. In 1867 he turned his attention to the system of logic created by the British logician and mathematician George Boole, and he worked on extending and transforming Boolean algebra until 1885. Peirce is best known for his philosophical system, later called pragmatism. According to his pragmatic philosophy, no object or concept possesses inherent validity or importance. Its significance lies only in the practical effects resulting from its use or application. The "truth" of an idea or object, therefore, can be measured by empirical investigation of its usefulness. The concept was expanded by the American philosophers William James and John Dewey, and it profoundly influenced modern philosophical and sociological thought. Peirce's works include Photometric Researches (1878) and Studies in Logic (1883). His essays appear in Chance, Love, and Logic, published posthumously in 1923.
