George Edwards Peacock
Celebrating Sydney Harbour This exhibition displays thirty three paintings and prints by George Edwards Peacock, a little known but prolific, convict artist. His beautiful paintings document Sydney Harbour, the villas overlooking its foreshores and its major public buildings. Oppressed by debt and a failing solicitor's practice, George Edwards Peacock forged a power of attorney in 1836. Sentenced to transportation for life, he arrived in Sydney in 1837, marked as a 'gentleman' convict. By 1840 he was living quietly at South Head, working as a meteorological recorder while attempting to salvage a failing marriage. Perhaps to alleviate the distress and poverty of his situation, in the 1840s he began painting professionally. His oils, generally small and atmospheric, concentrated on Sydney Harbour and its villas. With their precise detail enlivened by artistic effect, his exquisite paintings give a unique view of Sydney and its harbour, quite unlike that of his better-known contemporary Conrad Martens. Because he was prolific, many of his works have survived. The Library has conserved its extensive collection of Peacock's paintings for an exhibition which showcased - for the first time - the work of this talented, but little known, colonial artist.

The beautiful and original work of the little known but prolific colonial artist George Edwards Peacock will be displayed in the State Library's Picture Gallery from 13 May 2002. will showcase the Library's extensive collection of Peacock's small, atmospheric oil paintings and lithographs of Sydney, its Harbour and surrounding villas. State Librarian & Chief Executive Dagmar Schmidmaier said: "These wonderful illustrations of Sydney by this rarely known 19th century artist enable us to share another part of the Library's rich Australiana collections." As a practicing solicitor in London, the pressures of the profession led Peacock to commit a most serious crime - he was convicted of forging a power of attorney. He escaped the death sentence and was transported to Australia for life, arriving in Sydney in 1837. After serving as a 'gentleman' convict and working as a meteorological recorder, Peacock's artistic work began appearing on the market in the early 1840s. His often exquisitely detailed paintings provided a fascinating view of Sydney, quite unlike that of his better-known contemporary Conrad Martens. According to Richard Neville, Exhibition Curator, "Details of Peacock's life in Australia as an artist, such as his art education are unknown. The date and place of his death remains a mystery, however the number of his surviving works suggest he was prolific and successful."

George R. Peacock Jr
It is important to start this page with the fact that there is no reference to George Jr. as being referred to as "Jr". We use this title because it gets more confusing as time goes on because the Peacocks seem to really like the name George. We would not be surprised if there are several ancestors in England also named George. Only time will tell. George Jr. briefly served with the 16th U.S Regulars at the start of the Civil War, and then with the 9th Iowa Cavalry Co. F. for the remainder of the war.
After the Civil War, George Jr. headed back to Lansing, IA and married Catherine Wagner who was originally from somewhere in Illinois. They appeared to own a few hundred acre piece of property outside Lansing heading towards Waterville. Catherine and George Jr. had a son named George Frederick Peacock b 1877. As a side note, there was(is) an article in the "Lansing Mirror" newspaper dated 3/4/1887 which said that; "George Peacock opened up a shooting gallery in the rear of Weidermeyer's Saloon". His (George's) pistol was described as " a neat little target gun, and would be pleased to see all those who are fond of target shooting". George F. married a woman named Claire ?. No evidence of any children by Claire and George F was found in Allamakee Co., but this does not mean there were no descendants. Claire Peacock died in 1911. George F. died in 1914. (possibly as a result of WWI, however no effort has been made to determine this.) George Jr. died in 1923. Catherine died in 1917.

Governor Ryan's speech

Blue Ribbon school has red-letter day

By Justin Kmitch Daily Herald Staff Writer
Posted on November 14, 2000 A select group of Peacock Middle officials and students stood in anticipation Tuesday, looking toward the sky. Waiting, wondering when he was going to get there and how long he was going to stay. No, they weren't waiting for Santa Claus. Instead they were awaiting the arrival of Gov. George Ryan in his helicopter, who was visiting Peacock "to see firsthand what this Blue Ribbon school is all about." Earlier this year, Peacock Middle became the second public middle school in DuPage County ever to be named to the U.S. Department of Education's coveted Blue Ribbon school list. State school officials named the Itasca Elementary District 10 Middle, along with nine other schools in Illinois, as award recipients. "It's a really cool feeling that the governor came to our school and recognized us," sixth-grader Laura Boeche said. "It shows that he cares about what we're doing." Once inside, Ryan and his entourage toured the school's new Video Broadcast Studio and the governor filmed a segment for the school's first television show to be aired when the studio is complete.
