Wolfgang Pauli
Max Born thought that Pauli was, perhaps, an even greater scientist than Einstein. "But he was a completely different type of man," wrote Born, "who, in my eyes, did not attain Einstein's greatness."
Karl von Meyenn and Engelbert Schucking
Figure 1 I will never forget the speech about me, and for me, that he gave at Princeton in 1945 after I got the Nobel Prize. It was like the abdication of a king, installing me as a kind of elected son, as his successor," Wolfgang Pauli reminisced in a 1955 letter to Max Born. Who was this prince of physics whose death in 1958 went unnoticed by The New York Times ? Pauli was born on 25 April 1900 in Vienna. His father was a professor of colloid chemistry at the University of Vienna and Ernst Mach, the eminent physicist and radical empiricist philosopher, was his godfather.

News Articles Essays and Papers Book Reviews Reading Lists ... Essays and Papers Wolfgang Pauli: Resurrection of Spirit in the World F. David Peat The dialogue between religion and science takes place not only as an open debate between two disciplines. It is also a movement towards wholeness in an individual who seeks to reconcile inner and outer, subjective and objective, theory and experience. In considering this relationship between science and religion it is useful to turn to the life of Wolfgang Pauli, one of the most important physicists of the twentieth century. Pauli was born in 1900 in Vienna and published his first scientific paper within two months of leaving high school. By the age of twenty he had written a 200-page article on the theory of relativity that was praised by Einstein in the following words, "no one studying this mature, grandly conceived work could believe the author is a man of 21(sic). One wonders what to admire most…the psychological understanding of the development of ideas, sureness of mathematical deduction, profound physical insight, capacity of presentation." Pauli's conversations with Heisenberg paved the way for the quantum theory and, within months of Heisenberg's discovery, Pauli had applied the new theory to calculate the spectrum of the hydrogen atom. His later discussions with Bohr helped to formulate the interpretation of that theory. His famous Exclusion Principle explains why there is structure in the universe. Electrons, protons and other particles called fermions are governed by a principle of antisymmetry, which means that they cannot all be in the same quantum state. This restriction gives rise to the differentiation of the material world into the various chemical elements. On the other hand, boson particles are governed by principles of symmetry which allows them to congregate into a single coherent state, as is the case with lasers, superconductors and superfluids. Pauli's vision of overarching symmetry in nature also led him to predict the neutrino, twenty-five years before it was discovered experimentally.

Pauli centenary
Wolfgang Pauli: never to be excluded This year marks the 100th anniversary of Wolfgang Pauli, who was born in Vienna on 25 April 1900 and died in Zürich on 15 December 1958. Maurice Jacob describes several events that have been arranged to mark the Pauli centenary.
Pauli and mother
Wolfgang Pauli - long the "conscience of physics" - was professor at ETH-Zürich for 30 years, from 1928 to 1958, except during the Second World War, when he was at Princeton at the Institute for Advanced Study. To honour his centenary, the ETH Library organized a special exhibition, which was first presented at ETH Zürich in April and May.
The exhibition, which beautifully illustrates Pauli's life, has now moved to CERN where it is on display in the Main Building from 17 August until 26 September. A ceremony in the Council Chamber on Monday 11 September at 4.30 p.m. will include short presentations from Maurice Jacob (chairman of the Pauli Committee), Konrad Osterwalder (Rektor of the ETH Zürich), Luciano Maiani (director-general of CERN) and Charles Enz (University of Geneva) on Pauli's life and legacy.
It is natural that CERN honours in this way one of the greatest physicists of the past century. Pauli acted as custodian of intellectual integrity while the field underwent tremendous development. He discovered the Exclusion Principle, which he formulated in 1924 and for which he was awarded the Nobel prize in 1945. He predicted the existence of the neutrino in 1930. However, he first became known through the publication of his famous 1921 review on relativity, when he was a student of Arnold Sommerfeld's. Many physicists, including Einstein, much admired this article, later reprinted as a book.
