Papin, Denis 1647-1712?, French physicist and inventor. He was an assistant of Christian Huygens and of Robert Boyle and was professor of mathematics at the Univ. of Marburg (1687-96). He invented (1679) a steam digester (forerunner of the autoclave), a vessel in which the boiling point of water is raised by an increase in steam pressure; this device demonstrated the influence of atmospheric pressure on boiling points. His other inventions include a safety valve (for the digester), a condensing pump, an air gun, and a paddle-wheel boat. A pioneer in the development of the steam engine, he devised in 1690 a pump with a piston raised by steam.

    PAPIN, DENIS
PAPIAS—PAPIER MACHE shown in this city. She was worshipped, under the form of a conical stone, in an open-air sanctuary of the usual Cypriote type (not unlike those of Mycenaean Greece), the general form of which is known from representations on late gems, and on Roman imperial coins;1 its ground plan was discovered by excavations in i888.2 It suffered repeatedly from earthquakes, and was rebuilt more than once; in Roman times it consisted of an open court, irregularly quadrangular, with porticos ar>d chambers on three sides, and a gateway through them on the east. The position of the sacred stone, and the interpretation of many details shown on the gems and coins, remain uncertain. South of the main court lie the remains of what may be either an earlier temple, or the traditional tomb of Cinyras, almost wholly destroyed except its west wall of gigantic stone slabs. After the foundation of New Paphos and the extinction of the Cinyrad and Ptolemaic dynasties, the importance of the Old Town declined rapidly. Though restored by Augustus and renamed Sebaste, after the great earthquake of 15 B.C., and visited in state by Titus before his Jewish War in 79 B.C., it was ruinous and desolate by Jerome's time3; but the prestige of its priest-kings partly lingers in the exceptional privileges of the patriarch of the Cypriote Church (see CVPRUS, CHURCH OF). New Paphos became the administrative capital of the whole island in Ptolemaic and Roman days, as well as the head of one of the four Roman districts; it was also a flourishing commercial city in the time of Strabo, and famous for its oil, and for " diamonds " of medicinal power. There was a festal procession thence annually to the ancient temple. In A.D. 960 it was attacked and destroyed by the Saracens. The site shows a Roman theatre, amphitheatre, temple and other ruins, with part of the city wall, and the moles of the Roman harbour, with a ruined Greek cathedral and other medieval buildings. Outside the walls lies another columnar building. Some rock tombs hard by may be of earlier than Roman date.

Papin, Denis (1647-c. 1712) French physicist and technologist who in 1679 invented a vessel that was the forerunner of the pressure cooker and the autoclave, together with a safety valve.
Papin was born in Blois, on the Loire, and studied medicine at Angers. His first job was as assistant to Dutch physicist Christiaan Huygens in Paris, and in 1675 he went to London as secretary to scientist and inventor Robert Hooke. Papin spent 1681-84 in Venice, returned to London and a job at the Royal Society, then became professor of mathematics at Marburg 1687-96. He returned to London in 1707.
Papin worked with Huygens and Irish physicist Robert Boyle on an air pump and invented the condensing pump. It was in London with Boyle that he invented the 'steam digester' - a vessel with a tightly fitting lid that prevented steam from escaping. The high pressure generated caused the boiling point of the water to rise considerably.
In 1690, Papin suggested a cylinder-and-piston steam engine, but his scheme was unworkable, because he proposed to use one vessel as both boiler and cylinder. He proposed the first steam-driven boat in 1690 and in 1707 he built a paddle boat, but the paddles were turned by human power and not by steam.

    Seiner Zeit weit voraus
