Missing Volumes Project
Avid readers of contemporary authors, we need your help in adding some missing volumes to our collection. The University Library has a very fine collection on Modern North American Literary Authors: authors writing from the late 50s to present, representing the finest efforts in creative writing. This collection is one of the true long term assets of our library. While we have complete coverage of most literary authors’ prose works, we do have some gaps. We would like to ask the university community to help us fill those gaps. Please examine the list below and consider donating your hard cover copies of any of the listed items to the library. Each donated item will be bookplated noting your contribution, if you wish. Most of the items on the list are hard to find and usually represent the earliest works of the author. Many items were published before the library was actively purchasing materials in the humanities. We appreciate your interest and feedback in our “missing volumes project.”

(In association with Amazon.com) Imaginary Homelands is a collection of essays and criticism as the sub-title says. What the title doesn't make clear is the breadth and clarity of this collection. Here in one volume you have Rushdie's thoughts on everything from Umberto Eco to Commonwealth Literature. None of the essays is obtuse or incomprehensible, and all of them are revealing. If as Rushdie says "Books choose their authors; the act of creation is not entirely a rational and conscious one", then something different must be said about essays. Running the gamut of feelings from rebellion (Commonwealth Literature) to the desire for reconciliation and understanding (In Good Faith), this collection is poignant, not least because it is a break from Rushdie's fantastic novels.

What does it take to land on Advertising Age's list of the top 100 players in advertising history? Impact. Having one's name on the door is not a requisite nor is heading a major advertiser. Shaping the course of advertising history is. And so the legends of the industry are obvious. In the triumvirate of greats, Bill Bernbach is the hands-down winner, taking the No. 1 honor for devising the creative yardstick by which most advertising today is measured. Marion Harper Jr. follows for his creation of the agency network system. Leo Burnett takes the No. 3 spot for giving birth to advertising's most memorable and effective icons. Purists may quibble about some of the placements. Indeed, ranking Harper above David Ogilvy, for example, could be debated ad nauseum. Still, there's little disputing that both belong in advertising's top 10 pantheon. With impact as our barometer, there are some on the list with more controvertial contributions. Al Achenbaum, the former agency executive who as a consultant later hammered away at the industry's 15% media commission, and Robert Jacoby, whose $110 million windfall from the sale of Ted Bates Worldwide still hovers over some advertisers' agency pay decisions, aren't heroes but their influence is manifest.
