Constant Reader added a conference for Short Stories in October 1999 to organize one story discussion per week, beginning each Monday. Sherry Keller ran this list with suggestions from readers for the first several months, however the scramble to round up unrelated stories each week defeated the plan.
We are working now from one collection of stories, with anyone fond of a particular story beginning the discussion at will. See the list of previously discussed stories sorted by:

Designing elliptic filters with maximum selectivity The elliptic filter is the best choice for meeting stringent magnitude-response requirements, and a design technique helps you to maximize the band-edge selectivity without increasing filter order. Celestino A Corral, Motorola Inc document.write(get_publication('EDN')); Electronic-filter design, whether analog, digital, or distributed, is an essential part of many electrical engineers' workdays. Frequency-selective networks are useful for suppressing noise, rejecting unwanted signals, or in some way manipulating the input signal's characteristics. Although applications abound, engineers typically use classical filters that are polynomial approximations to the brick-wall filter (see sidebar " A new look at the brick-wall filter "). These classical filters include Butterworth, Chebyshev, and elliptic filters.

Defiance County by Jay Brandon Pocket Books, 373 pages, $23 Reviewed by Stephen M. Murphy in 1997 Jay Brandon has written several compelling legal thrillers, most combining a literate style with serious themes such as racism and child molestation. In Rules of Evidence and Loose Among the Lambs , his thoughtful exploration of these themes overcame occasional lapses in plot. Unfortunately, his latest novel, Defiance County , lacks a compelling theme while suffering from frequent lapses in plot. Despite the title, Defiance County has more to do with a small town than the county in which it sits. The book attempts to explore the dark side of small-town life: the petty jealousies, longstanding grudges, and narrow minds. The east Texas town of Galilee thrives because of one person, aging matriarch Alice Beaumont, owner of the Smoothskins panties factory. When Alice's daughter Lorrie and her husband Ronnie are murdered, and her baby granddaughter kidnapped, the town splits apart. Relationships become even more strained when Billy Fletcher, brother of District Attorney Morgan Fletcher and foreman of the Smoothskins factory, is arrested. Because of the conflict of interest, deputy attorney general Kelsey Hatch is assigned to prosecute the case. Hatch's legal career has been on a downward spin since she compromised a prosecution she viewed as unethical. The assignment to prosecute Billy Fletcher feels, to her, like a banishment to Siberia. While driving through Galilee for the first time, Kelsey senses something different about the town:

2001 USABDA Western Regional DanceSport Championship
On June 16, 2001 the 10th Annual USABDA Western Regional Amateur DanceSport Championship was hosted by the NorCal Chapter at the San Jose Civic Auditorium in San Jose, California. The very full day started at 10 am with workshops on Cha Cha by Nadia Eftedal and Waltz by Stephen Cullip. These former champions gave great insights into the dances they taught. About 40 participants attended each class. If you haven’t attended our very high quality, low cost workshops, you are really missing out! Thanks to Nadia and Stephen for your wonderful classes. At 1:15 our competitions began. Everything ran very smoothly, and we actually finished the sessions early! I want to thank all of our officials, board members and volunteers for their dedication and hard work. Special thanks go to Lynn Sanders, our volunteer coordinator (and program printer) and Craig Cesarin, the head volunteer at the event. Others whose help made this possible: Arkady Bilenko, Agnes Tong, Rick Dale, Brian Farquharson, John Haddon, Gwen Ottinger, Richie Hom, Laura La Gassa, Dan Lo, Dan Marshall, Dawn Neuhart, Ron Nicholson, Doug Priest, Brian Rose, Lydia Scardina, Mark Scardina, Ans Stork, Nancy Tang, Gabrielle Von Stephens, Sarah Stork, Charlie Jackson, Gail DeCamp, Rebecca Melton, and Scott Sahlman. If I have missed anyone, please let me know. Our hard working Board members devoted many hours to planning and running this event. Alex Chan prepared our program and, with Natalie Kirilcuk, handled ticket orders and pre-registration. Tina Moretti-Rose ran the box office and awards. Mark and Lydia Scardina did our flier and promotional material design. Turtle Brennan designed the floor layout, supervised the ballroom preparation and was our late-evening M.C. Karen Andersen did her usual great job as our daytime and early evening M.C. Karen Chow and Hans Stork assisted before and during the event.

Introduction to
Mass Communications
CMMN A100 is designed to provide you an overview of the mass media of communications in the United Stateswhat they are, their historical background, their role in the political society, their functions, their effects, their limitations, ethical and legal concerns, and current issues.
The text for the course is John Vivian's The Media of Mass Communication (6th ed.; 2003 update), the leading introductory textbook. Most classes will be given over to discussion of the day's topic. Read the assigned chapter before the class period so that you can participate fullyand get a good grade on the daily quiz. You can find additional resources keyed to each chapter and an interactive study guide on the CD included with the text.
A chapter quiz will be given at the beginning of each class period to help you grasp the main points. You must be in class at the time the quiz is handed out in order to take it. Five exams are scheduled. Four will cover blocks of chapters, as shown on the calendar . The final exam will be cumulative. In no instance will a quiz or an exam be given other than at the time scheduled. Please arrange doctor's appointments, trips home and other personal activities so that they do not conflict with quizzes or exams.
