The Roman Martyrologium and the historical Martyrologies of Bede and his imitators place the feast on this date. The Gregorian Sacramentary contains under the same date the orations for his Mass. The name does not appear in the three oldest and most important MSS. of the "Martyrologium Hieronymianum", but was inserted in later recensions ("Martyrol. Hieronymianum", ed. De Rossi-Duchesne, in Acta SS., Nov., II, 121). The saint is without doubt a martyr of the Roman Church. He was buried in a catacomb on the Via Nomentana near the gate of that name. Three seventh century Itineraries make explicit reference to his grave, and Pope Adrian I restored the church built over it (De Rossi, "Rome Sotterranea", I, 178-79). A titular church of Rome, mentioned in the fifth century, was dedicated to him ( titulus S. Nicomedis ). Nothing is known of the circumstances of his death. The legend of the martyrdom of Sts. Nereus and Achilleus introduces him as a presbyter and places his death at the end of the first century. Other recensions of the martyrdom of St. Nicomedes ascribe the sentence of death to the Emperor Maximianus (beginning of the fourth century). Su padre fue el dramaturgo Nicomedes Santa Cruz Aparicio (Lima, 1870 - 1957), y su madre Victoria Gamarra Ramírez, también limeña y heredera de riquísima tradición folklórica, hija, a su vez, del notable maestro pintor, escenógrafo y compositor de zamacuecas el Sr. José Milagros Gamarra, y nieta del no menos famoso pintor limeño Demetrio Gamarra. His brother Socrates, assisted by Mithradates, drove him out, but he was reinstated by the Romans (90). He was again expelled by Mithradates, who defeated him on the river Amneus (or Amnias) in Paphlagonia. This led to the first Mithradatic War, as the result of which Nicomedes was again restored (84). On the morning of the i4th he led his column, 1000 strong, in the attack on the Kashmir gate, and successfully entered the streets of Delhi. But in trying to clear the ramparts as far as the Lahore Gate, he undertook a task beyond the powers of his wearied troops. In encouraging them as they hesitated, he turned his back on the enemy and was shot in the back. The wound was mortal, but his magnificent physique allowed him to linger for nine days before finally succumbing on the 2jrd of September. His best epitaph is found in the words of Sir John Lawrence's Mutiny Report:— " Brigadier-General John Nicholson is now beyond human praise and human reward. But so long as British rule shall endure in India, his fame can never perish. He seems especially to have been raised up for this juncture. He crowned a bright, though brief, career by dying of the wound he received in the moment of victory at Delhi. Nicomedes himself criticised the method that Eratosthenes used to duplicate the cube and we have made a reasonably accurate guess at Eratosthenes 's life span (276 BC - 194 BC). A less certain piece of information comes from Apollonius choosing to name a curve 'sister of the conchoid' which is assumed to be a name he has chosen to compliment Nicomedes' discovery of the conchoid. Since Apollonius lived from about 262 BC to 190 BC these two pieces of information give a fairly accurate estimate of Nicomedes' dates. However, as we remarked the second of these pieces of information cannot be relied on but nevertheless, from what we know of the mathematics of Nicomedes, the deduced dates are fairly convincing. Saints O'the Day Feast of Our Lady of Sorrows September 15 Adam of Caithness, OSB Cist. B (PC) Died 1222. Saint Adam entered the Cistercians as a young man. Later he was abbot of Melrose until King William of Scotland appointed him bishop in a remote area over which he wanted to gain more power. As bishop, Adam tried to enforce canon and civil law, including the payment of tithes, which he increased gradually doubled. Of course, this led to a revolt. A mob forced its way into the bishop's house at Halkirke and burnt him and his followers to death. His body, although "roasted with fire and livid with bruises, was found entire under a heap of stones and buried honorably in the church." Thereafter, an unofficial cultus developed (Farmer). The name conchoid is derived from Greek meaning "shell", as in the word conch. The curve is also known as cochloid. From E. H. Lockwood (1961): The invention of the conchoid ('mussel-shell shaped') is ascribed to Nicomedes (second century B.C.) by Pappus and other classical authors; it was a favourite with the mathematicians of the seventeenth century as a specimen for the new method of analytical geometry and calculus.
