Rolf Nevanlinna -palkinto kvanttitietokoneen kehittäjälle Palkinto myönnettiin nyt viidennen kerran Berliinissä annettiin myös kansainvälinen Rolf Nevanlinna -tiedepalkinto, jonka sai 39-vuotias yhdysvaltalainen Peter Shor tunnustuksena kvanttitietokoneen kehittämiseksi tehdystä teoreettisesta työstä. Palkinto myönnettiin nyt viidennen kerran.
Palkinnon luovutti Kansainvälisen matemaattisen unionin nimissä akateemikko Olli Lehto , joka vuonna 1982 teki aloitteen Nevanlinna-palkinnon perustamisesta.
Berliinissä pidettyä seremoniaa todisti nelituhatpäinen yleisö, muun muassa Saksan tiedeministeri Jurgen Ruttgers. Saksan televisiossa ja lehdistössä Nevanlinna-palkinto uutisoitiin Fieldsin mitaleja näkyvämmin, sillä kvanttitietokonetta tutkitaan myös Saksassa.
Nevanlinna-mitalissa on muun muassa sana Helsinki binäärikoodattuna. Nollista ja ykkösistä koostuva binäärikoodi saattaa kuitenkin pian käydä vanhanaikaiseksi, sillä kvanttitietokone hyväksyy tavanomaisten bittien lisäksi myös "välitiloja" vastaavat kvanttibitit, joita se kuvaa kompleksiluvuilla. Salakirjoitus
vaarassa Kvanttitietokoneen rakentaminen lienee kuitenkin vuosikymmenien päässä, mutta Peter Shor on nyt osoittanut, ettei sen toiminnalle ole teoreettista estettä. Shor on kehittänyt muun muassa kvanttitietokoneeseen sopivan virheitä korjaavan koodin.

Relation and Interaction of Science and Social Practices: A Case Study of the Division of Biometrics at the Rolf Nevanlinna Insitute, University of Helsinki
My main research intrest is the relation and interaction of science and social practices which I handle on the level of epistemological, normative and social questions. Modelling, especially mathematical modelling is epistemologically challenging: * What, then, are models? * What is their status between theory and data? * How do they differ when viewed from the philosophical and mathematical perspectives? Normative and social questions intertwine with values and scientific practices: * How are values included in the moral and social aspects of research work? * In what way are research environments organized, what kind of networks of collaboration are involved? * How do researchers from various fields and backgrounds share a common methodology?

    Statement by Dr. Rita Colwell
    Director, National Science Foundation
On The Recipients of the Fields Medal and Rolf Nevanlinna Prize in Mathematics
I am pleased to congratulate Vladimir Voevodsky and Madhu Sudan on receiving the most distinguished prizes in the mathematical sciences. Their accomplishments reflect the recognition that mathematics underlies all fields of science and engineering, enabling progress in our economy, our industry and our lives. We are proud that the National Science Foundation (NSF) has supported the groundbreaking work of these honorees. The Fields Medal, the world's highest honor for mathematical research, rivals the Nobels of other sciences. Vladimir Voevodsky, currently at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, N.J., shares the 2002 Fields Medal with Laurent Lafforgue, a colleague in France. Dr. Voevodsky conducted his prize-winning research in algebraic geometry and number theory, developing novel ways to describe the geometric shapes of solutions to algebraic equations, with support from NSF grants. Madhu Sudan, of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge, is receiving the 2002 Rolf Nevanlinna Prize, which recognizes outstanding work in the mathematical aspects of computer science. His work in advancing the theory of probabilistically checkable proofsa way to recast a mathematical proof in computer language for additional checks on its validityand developing error-correcting codes was accomplished with the support of an NSF Faculty Early Career Development Award and individual grants.

Article about the award of the Fields Medals to Laurent Lafforgue and Vladimir Voevodsky, and the Category Science Math Reference Prizes...... traditionally restricted to young researchers, no older than 40. Theprize is named for rolf nevanlinna, a past president of the IMU.
    http://www.maa.org/news/fields02.html
2002 Fields Medals and Nevanlinna Prize Awarded
The Fields Medal is often described as "the Nobel prize for mathematics." Presented by the International Mathematical Union, the prize is named for the Canadian mathematician John Charles Fields (1863-1932), who chaired the committee that established the prize in 1931. Though there is no formal rule to this effect, Fields Medals have traditionally been presented to young mathematicians (no older than 40). The first of this year's Fields medalists, Laurent Lafforgue , was honored for making major advances in the "Langlands Program," based on a visionary set of conjectures by Robert Langlands that sketch out deep connections between number theory, analysis, and group representation theory. Lafforgue proved the global Langlands correspondence for function fields, building on the work of Vladimir Drinfeld (also a Fields medalist, in 1990). Lafforgue's work confirms the fundamental insights of Langlands and is an important step towards the realization of the full program. It is said to be "characterized by formidable technical power, deep insight, and a tenacious, systematic approach." The second 2002 Fields medalist is Vladimir Voevodsky . He was honored for developing a new cohomology theory for algebraic varieties. Voevodsky's "motivic cohomology" (the name is related to Alexander Grothendieck's visionary idea that there should exist objects, called "motives", that establish the connection between number theory and algebraic geomtry) builds on an idea first proposed by Andrei Suslin. Among other things, it creates a strong connection between algebraic varieties and algebra K-theory and it provides a framework for studying many new cohomology theories. One consequence of Voevodsky's work is a proof of the Milnor Conjecture, for many years the main open question in algebraic K-theory. His work is said to be "characterized by an ability to handle highly abstract ideas with ease and flexibility and to deploy those ideas in solving quite concrete mathematical problems."
