Rolf Nevanlinna 's interests at school were firstly classics, secondly mathematics. However he read 's Introduction to Higher Analysis before going to university and became an enthusiastic analyst for the whole of his life. ( was a cousin of Nevanlinna's father.) Rolf entered Helsinki University in 1913. There he was inspired by 's teaching. He avoided military service since he was too light and continued his studies throughout the war years. His thesis was presented in 1919, and he applied the care and attention to detail in this which was to typify all his work. University posts were not available in Finland in 1919 so Nevanlinna became a school teacher. In 1920 he received an invitation from Landau His first visit was to belatedly accept Landau Landau he met Hilbert Courant and Emmy Noether Hadamard Montel and he also visited Bloch in a mental hospital.

Fields Medal and Rolf Nevanlinna Prizes
    Fields Medal
At the 1924 International Congress of Mathematicians in Toronto, a resolution was adopted that at each ICM, two gold medals should be awarded to recognize outstanding mathematical achievement. Professor J. C. Fields, a Canadian mathematician who was Secretary of the 1924 Congress, later donated funds establishing the medals which were named in his honor. Consistent with Fields's wish that the awards recognize both existing work and the promise of future achievement, it was agreed to restrict the medals to mathematicians not over forty at the year of the Congress. In 1966 it was agreed that, in light of the great expansion of mathematical research, up to four medals could be awarded at each Congress.
    For more details
about the origins of the Fields Medal we recommend the article:
Henry S. Tropp, " The Origins and History of the Fields Medal ", Historia Mathematica 3 (1976) 167-181. The following text by Eberhard Knobloch describes the design of the medal:

- Science Magazine online, Aug. 20, 2002 CAMBRIDGE, Mass. Madhu Sudan , an associate professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, has won the 2002 Rolf Nevanlinna Prize, one of the most prestigious international awards in mathematics. He was recognized for his work in theoretical computer science. Commented Professor John Guttag, head of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (EECS): "Madhu combines enormous technical virtuosity with a rare gift for choosing problems that are both important and deep. His accomplishments are important not only in their own right, but for the impact they have on the problems on which others choose to work. Madhu is also a great colleague who contributes to EECS and MIT in many ways beyond his research accomplishments." Sudan, who celebrates his 36th birthday on Sept.12, is a native of Madras (now Chennai), India. He received the B. Tech. degree in computer science from the Indian Institute of Technology in New Delhi in1987 and the Ph.D. in computer science at the University of California at Berkeley in 1992. He was a researcher at the IBM Thomas J. Watson Research Center in Yorktown Heights, N.Y., from 1992 to 1997 before joining the MIT faculty in 1997.

    Division of Algorithmic Data Analysis
The Research Division of Algorithmic Data Analysis at Rolf Nevanlinna Institute University of Helsinki , developed computational methods for modern data analysis and applied them on challenging problems in science and engineering. The research covered a spectrum of methods from algorithms for knowledge discovery and data mining to Bayesian statistical tools and models. The division worked in a close cooperation with other research divisions of the Institute, with the Department of Computer Science, and with other departments of the University. In 1999 the Division consisted of Dr. Hannu TT Toivonen (Division Head), Kari Vasko , M.Sc., and Dr. Bob O'Hara (Visiting Researcher). Data mining and knowledge discovery Data mining methods can be used to analyze large databases and to discover regularities and hidden relationships in them. The most recent research topic of the Division, in collaboration with the Division of Biometry and the Finnish Genome Center (Prof. Juha Kere), was the development of gene localization methods, based on patterns in genetic marker data. A recurrent research theme for the Division has been the discovery of frequently occurring logical patterns or structural subcomponents in large databases. An interesting application is the discovery of relationships between structural properties of chemical constituents and their functions in living organisms, such as carcinogenecity . This line of research has benefited from collaboration with Dr. Luc Dehaspe (Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium).

Acknowledgment Rolf Nevanlinna Prize The Rolf Nevanlinna Prize in mathematical aspects of information science was established by the Executive Committee of the International Mathematical Union IMU in April 1981. It was decided that the prize should consist of a gold medal and a cash prize similar to the ones associated with the Fields Medal and that one prize should be given at each International Congress of Mathematicians. One year later, in April 1982, the IMU acepted the offer by the University of Helsinki to finance the prize. The prize was named the Rolf Nevanlinna Prize in honor of Rolf Nevanlinna (1895-1980), who had been Rector of the University of Helsinki and President of the IMU and who in the 1950s had taken the initiative to the computer organization at Finnish universities. On its obverse side, the medal represents Nevanlinna and bears the text "Rolf Nevanlinna Prize". In addition, there is in very small characters "RH 83". RH refers to the Finnish sculptor Raimo Heino (1932-95) who designed the medal, and 83 to the year 1983 when the first medal was minted. On the reverse side, the two figures are related to the University of Helsinki. On the University's seal in the lower right, the text "Universitas Helsingiensis" is readable. The seal is from the 17th century, except for the Cross of Liberty which was added to it in 1940. In the upper left part, the word "Helsinki" is in coded form. The name of the prize winner is engraved on the rim of the medal.

"Pure mathematics enjoys the luxury of studying its constructions, whether finite or infinite, in complete independence of all questions of efficiency." explained Jacob Schwartz, who spoke on Tarjan's work. "By contrast, theoretical computer science must ultimately concern itself with computing engines which operate with limited speed and data storage, and therefore must take efficiency as one of its central concerns. Two closely related activities, algorithm design and algorithm analysis, grow out of this inevitable concern."
