    Chapter VII
At Plover Bay and St. Michael
    Steamer Corwin,
    Plover Bay, June 15, 1881.
A little before four o'clock the next morning, June 10, I was awakened by the officer of the deck coming into the cabin and reporting that the weather was densely foggy, and that ice in large masses was crowding down upon us, which meant "The Philistines be upon thee, Samson!" Shortly afterward, the first mass struck the ship and made her tremble in every joint; then another and another, in quick succession, while the anchor was being hurriedly raised,, The situation in which we suddenly found ourselves was quite serious. The ice, had it been like that about the ship of the Ancient Mariner, "here and there and all around," would have raised but little apprehension. But it was only on one side of us, while a rocky beach was close by on the other, and against this beach in our disabled condition the ice was steadily driving us. Whether backing or going ahead in so crowded a bit of water, the result for some, time was only so many shoves toward shore. At length a block of small size, twenty or thirty feet in diameter, drifted in between the Corwin and the shore, and by steaming against it and striking it on the landward bow she glinted around, head to the pack, and an opening allowed her to enter a little distance. This was gradually increased by stopping and starting until we were safe in the middle of it. Watching the compass and con. stantly taking soundings, we traced the edge of the pack, and in an hour or two made our escape into open water.

Clans Tartans History Travel ... Feedback Clan Muir T he name means 'living by a moor or heath'. The future King Robert II married Elizabeth, daughter of Sir Adam Mure of Rowallan, in 1346. Ten years later the marriage was challenged, possibly on the grounds of there being a degree of consanguinity between them, and a dispensation was sought from the Pope. This was granted in 1347, when the legitimacy of their children, including the future King Robert III, was formally acknowledged. Sir William Mure of Rowallan (d. 1616) married Elizabeth, sister of the poet Alexander Montgomerie (1545-98), but the male Rowallan line ended in 1700 on the death of their great-grandson. The attached voters list was created under the provision of the Dominion Franchise Act, which directed the federal government to create Lists of Electors for use in federal elections. The List of Electors for 1935 has been microfilmed, as have most other federal voters lists up to at least the late 1970s and are available from the National Archives of Canada. The Lists of Electors are arranged alphabetically by the name of the electoral district (constituency) within each province. Beaverdell and Carmi fall in the Yale Electoral District. Within the electoral districts the lists are further arranged by polling station number and then by street address. Beaverdell and Carmi fall with Rural polling Station No. 6, "Beaverdell". The only time these polling station lists are arranged alphabetically by the name of the elector is for some of the rural electoral districts and polling stations. Polling Station No. 6, Beaverdell is a good example. The original was not arranged in strict alphabetical order, but by first letter order. I have noted this is quite common on most lists in 1935. The microfilm series for the 1935 electoral rolls are found in the National Archives of Canada and are listed in their Finding Aid 113-1 which covers the Office of the Chief Returning Officer. This Finding Aid was published in February 1989 and can be purchased from the National Archives of Canada. Yale Electoral District is found on microfilm M-4761.

Early Settlement from History of Jo Daviess County 1904 It is not known, and cannot definitely be ascertained, who were the first occupants of the territory within the bounds of what is now Jo Daviess County. It is more than probable that what is now known as Galena River was discovered by the French trader Pierre Le Sueur, who is said to have visited the mines long before any permanent settlement was made. That lead-mines existed near the site of the present city of Galena prior to 1810 is fairly well established; but they were worked by the Indians and the product of the mines were used only for the purpose of making bullets. It is also probable that traders and trappers made annual visits to the mines near Galena prior to 1820. There is on file with the Secretary of State at Springfield an old map, published in 1820, wherein Galena River is named "Mine River;" but just how it came to be called Mine River is not definitely known, and it is more than probable that many people visited the mines who left no record of their visit.late John Lorrain
