Special Activities Related to Women in Mathematics
Friday, August 21, 19:30
Panel Discussion : After recognition of the involvement of women from many countries as ICM participants, women speakers from several countries will discuss "Events and policies: Effects on women in mathematics". The panel is being organized by women from the Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) , the European Women in Mathematics (EWM) and the Committee on Women and Mathematics of the European Mathematical Society, represented by a committee consisting of Bhama Srinivasan (chair; Chicago, USA), Bettye Anne Case (Tallahassee, USA), and Christine Bessenrodt (Magdeburg, Germany). The organizers have received planning advice from women in several additional countries. They envision that each speaker will talk about how certain events or policies in her country have affected women in mathematics. For more information, please contact Bettye Anne Case ( case@math.fsu.edu
Friday, August 21, 21:15
A film titled " Women and mathematics across cultures " will be shown. The film briefly introduces EWM, shows some statistics, and allows four woman mathematicians to share their personal experiences about the impact of cultural differences on the status of women in the profession. The film was directed by Marjatta Naatanen (Helsinki, Finland) in collaboration with Bodil Branner (Lyngby, Denmark), Kari Hag (Trondheim, Norway), and Caroline Series (Warwick, UK).

Lehigh Math News
Volume 2, March 1997
NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
Thanks to Spring Break, I found time to write the second issue of the newsletter of the Mathematics Department of Lehigh University. This one is again being sent to all math alumni that we know about, including graduate students this time, but at some point we will stop sending it to people from whom we have received no response. So, if you want to continue to receive it and you have not been in touch with us at all during the past two years, then please let me know by e-mail or US mail. Please let us know what you are doing, for inclusion in the next issue. Some of the events that have taken place during the past year include a second Career Night and subsequent formation of a Mathematics Alumni Advisory Council, a series of lectures by Benoit Mandelbrot, a big banquet at Harvard honoring C.C. Hsiung, increased cooperation with the engineering college in our calculus courses, and new courses in Combinatorics and Financial Mathematics. Each of these, and others too, will be described in more detail in this newsletter. I am finishing my first 3-year term as chairman, and expect to serve a second term. It has been a difficult period in that the university budget is extremely tight. This has been caused primarily by increased financial aid and shortfalls in graduate tuition income, mainly in the colleges of engineering and education.

Lectures and Panel Discussion

Banquet
The International Mathematical Union declared the year 2000 to be World Mathematical Year and in response, the Fields Institute organized a symposium, "The Legacy of John Charles Fields" - a three-day meeting, June 7 - 9, featuring nine lectures by Fields medallists, two historical lectures, a panel discussion on the future of mathematics and a well-attended banquet. As well as a tribute to J. C. Fields, the symposium was part of a larger celebration of Canadian mathematics, preceded by the first MITACS Annual General Meeting and followed by Math 2000 at McMaster University. Sir Michael Atiyah gave the opening lecture of the symposium to a packed auditorium with over 400 people on the campus of the University of Toronto. His talk, entitled "Mathematics in the 20th Century" proved to be quite provocative and the topic of much debate throughout the three days. On the evening of the 7th, a panel discussion on the future of mathematics was moderated by Richard Kane and consisted of Jim Arthur, Michael Atiyah, Alan Baker, Richard Borcherds, Tim Gowers, Lisa Jeffrey, Cathleen Morawetz, Stephen Smale and Efim Zelmanov. The discussion was lively and topics ranged from the amount to which physics would continue to inform mathematics to the degree to which computers will one day be able to "do" mathematics.

Cathleen Synge Morawetz Is First Woman To Receive Medal For Work In Mathematics>/B> Her Research On Partial Differential Equations Helped Engineers Build Better Airplane Wings On Tuesday, December 8th, President Clinton named New York University professor emerita Cathleen Synge Morawetz the recipient of the NationalMedal of Science for mathematics. Morawetz a former director of NYU's Courant Institute of Mathematical Sciences is the first woman to receive the medal for mathematics. The medal recognizes her pioneering advances in partial differential equations and wave propagation resulting in applications to aerodynamics, acousticsand optics. Morawetz is the sixth NYU faculty member to receive the National Medal of Science. Morawetz' work has been particularly influential on engineers' efforts to design airplane wings that minimize the impact of shock waves. In the late 1950s, she demonstrated that shock waves are inevitable if a plane moves fast enough, no matter how the wings are designed. As a result of this work, engineers now focus on minimizing rather than eliminating – shock waves. Morawetz also contributed fundamentally to the mathematical theory of scattering. This subject describes how waves interact with obstacles. It provides the framework for analyzing many techniques for remote sensing, including ultrasound and radar.

LEHIGH MATH NEWS Volume 3: April 1998 NOTE FROM THE CHAIR The many alumni who have expressed to me their appreciation for this newsletter makes the time spent writing it well worthwhile. This issue contains a long section of Alumni News. I hope that alumni who have not yet been featured will send me news for the next issue of this newsletter.
The sudden death of Emeritus Distinguished Professor of Mathematics Ed Assmus in March 1998 was probably the biggest news in the math department. Both of our Assistant Professors, Garth Isaak and Terry Napier, were promoted to Associate Professor, leaving the department completely tenured.
I try to keep the department’s web page current. For example, all three issues of LMN are there at http://www.lehigh.edu/~math
Don Davis DEATH OF ED ASSMUS The department and many friends were shocked to learn of the death on March 18 of Edward F. Assmus, Jr., 66, emeritus distinguished professor. He died while attending the Mathematisches Forschunginstitut in Oberwolfach, Germany, apparently the victim of a sudden stroke.
Assmus joined the Lehigh faculty in 1966. He became Professor in 1970, and Distinguished Professor in 1993. He retired in 1994, but remained extremely active in mathematics. He received a bachelor’s degree from Oberlin in 1953, and a PhD from Harvard in 1958. Before coming to Lehigh, Assmus held positions with the Office of Naval Research, Columbia University, and Wesleyan University.
