Oscars February 12th 2003 Yo, in the light of the Oscar nominations publiced yesterday, I've updated the visual effects oscar list. And for reasons I am still trying to figure out, I feel compelled to write a complete list of my thoughts regarding all of the nominations. Which is absurd, because:
a) I haven't seen half the nominated movies, and
b) I hate the Oscars, and have disagreed with 9 out of 10 choices for the past decade, so what do I care anyway? ;-) Anyway, I guess there's just so much prestige around these awards that I simply can't help having an opinion, even though I'd prefer to just not give a damn anymore...
-So here goes: Best actor: "The Pianist" Adrien Brody "Adaptation" Nicolas Cage "The Quiet American" Michael Caine "Gangs of New York" Daniel Day-Lewis "About Schmidt" Jack Nicholson Haven't seen neither of them... I'm rooting for Nick Cage to win, though, based on the trailers. Adaption looks like a character-solid piece of work, and not like a typical role for Cage.

Samuel Bickerstaff ( Biggerstaff ) immigrated to America around 1740 into the Philadelphia area and probably lived in variuos locations in Pennsylvania ( where he married Elizabeth Moore at Conococheague on 10Nov1741) and New Jersey until migrating south to North Carolina, where in 14Feb1757 he buys land on the south fork of the Catawba River. Samuel died sometime around Nov 1764. Samuel and Elizabeth had five children : Aaron (b. est 1742), Samuel (b. est 1743), Benjamin (b. est 1744), Molly (b. est 1746), and Martha (b. 1748). A very large numbers of present day Biggerstaffs in America can trace their lineage to Samuel Biggerstaff and Elizabeth Moore through one of these children. There are however, several lines: "The Virginia Line" and two Irish lines that are included in the Biggerstaff Family History, third edition 1989 by Ralph L. Biggerstaff that are not yet connected to Samuel and Elizabeth. Future research may be able to link these lines together. INVESTIGATION JUST BEGINNING INTO FATAL FIRE AT SEARS STORE
February 21, 2002

by Billy Coleburn, Editor
The Courier Record ©
More questions than answers continue to surround last Tuesday night's fire that fatally burned Sarah Jonas and destroyed the SEARS store at Blackstone Shopping Center. "Everything's wide open, and everything's being looked at," Police Investigator Johnny McNabb told the Courier-Record during a lengthy interview Monday afternoon. "We'll let everybody speculate all they want, but when we go to the press with this, we'll have the facts." Asked if he expects criminal charges in the case, McNabb said, "I can't comment on that." McNabb later in the interview said the fire is "definitely suspicious."
The big question, which has many in this small town playing Sherlock Holmes: If Sarah Jonas intentionally started the fire, what was her motive? McNabb, who is now leading one of the biggest probes of his career, said he has not yet received an autopsy report. Some EMTs reported smelling flammable liquid on Ms. Jonas' clothes as they treated her. McNabb is awaiting test results. McNabb has heard rumors that Sarah Jonas was seen buying lighter fluid recently at Wal-Mart. "But those are just rumors, after the fact. You know how that goes around here. There's no indication of any lighter fluid or anything like that." McNabb also is not ruling out a theft from the store. "We've got to look at all that. We can't say whether it was a larceny or not at this point." He did not elaborate.

December 2, 2000 Back to.... Previous Page Games Index NCAA-I Top Thirty-five save performance by Oliver Jonas paces 3-1 Crimson win. The Harvard Crimson scored two unanswered goals in the second period and goaltender Oliver Jonas stopped 35 shots to lead Harvard to a 3-1 win over the Clarkson Golden Knights Saturday night. Clarkson dictated the pace of the game early on, as the Knights did an effective job of keeping Harvard from gaining center ice. The Knights offense generated a number of shots, but Jonas, who owned the league's second lowest goals-against average (2.11) entering the weekend, kept Clarkson off the score board. Later in the first, though, the game started to turn Harvard's way. A little bit of luck helped their cause. Near the end of a penalty to Clarkson's Craig Foddrill, forward Tim Pettit took a shot from the left face-off circle that Clarkson goaltender Shawn Grant appeared to steer just wide of the goalpost. Just as the puck was about to clear the crease, defenseman Kerry Ellis-Toddington skated in toward the net. The puck found the blade of the defenseman's skate and bounced into the goal, giving Harvard its first goal of the night. The Knights evened the score less than a minute into the second period. Off a scramble in front of Jonas, freshman right wing Rob McFeeters found a loose puck and on his second shot beat the goaltender to even the score at one apiece. Matt Paopst and Kevin O'Flaherty were given the assists on the goal, McFeeters second of the weekend and fourth of the season.

Arafat's past comes back to haunt him
by George Jonas
National Post
January 16, 2002
On March 3 last year, I picked up a message on my service: "Mr. Jonas, my name is Jim Welsh," the flat American voice said. "I'm curious about something regarding the Munich Olympic massacre that you wrote about many years ago. I worked in the Palestinian section of the National Security Agency, and I am curious whether you were aware of a particular aspect of the incident.
"The NSA is a cryptologic organization, dealing with, among other things, signals intelligence. I'm no specialist in clandestine affairs, but I did write a book about an Israeli counterterrorist team set up to avenge the Munich massacre of 1972. On March 6, after making some inquiries, I phoned back Mr. Welsh.
The event Mr. Welsh wanted to talk about was a notorious terrorist action that occurred in March, 1973. Black September, the same group that had murdered the Israeli athletes at the Munich Olympics the year before, invaded a diplomatic reception held at the Saudi Arabian embassy in Khartoum, Sudan. Holding a group of diplomats hostage, the commandos demanded the release of Sirhan Sirhan, the assassin of Robert Kennedy. When U.S. President Richard Nixon refused to negotiate, the terrorists murdered American Ambassador Cleo A. Noel Jr., his deputy, George Curtis Moore, and Belgian charg© d'affaires, Guy Eid.
Mr. Welsh asked whether during my research I came upon any evidence that this particular action was orchestrated by Yasser Arafat, then leader of the Palestinian Liberation Organization. The answer was no; my book didn't deal with Khartoum at all. Then Mr. Welsh told me what he knew about the matter.

Sir Jonas Moore (1627-79)
Author: Mark Pickles
Sir Jonas Moore (see also "History of Time") was born in the hamlet of White Lee, just north of Higham on the southern slopes of Pendle Hill. From an early age he was devoted to mathematics and was helped in his career by Christopher Towneley, the patron of many Lancashire scientists, including Gascoigne, Horrocks and Crabtree, and Richard Towneley, Christopher's nephew.
Moore published a mathematics textbook in 1647, and shortly after went to London to seek employment as a mathematics teacher. But England was in the midst of its Civil War and Moore found it difficult to get established. However, Moore did manage to get employment as a surveyor, and was appointed surveyor in the drainage of the Fens, where he made his reputation.
Moore was knighted in 1669 and appointed General Surveyor of the Ordnance, operating from the Tower of London.
In 1674 Moore instigated the foundation of the Greenwich Observatory. A year later the brilliant young astronomer John Flamsteed (1646-1719) stayed with Moore in the Tower. Moore, now vice-president of the Royal Society, proposed that Flamsteed should be observer at Greenwich, and arranged for Flamsteed to meet the King. Moore became Flamsteed's patron, and provided him with many of the instruments necessary for setting up the observatory.
Shortly after the Greenwich Observatory was commissioned, Moore and Flamsteed determined that the first task of the observatory should be to obtain the most accurate clocks possible. This is when Richard Towneley, fellow member of the Towneley Group of scientists, who had designed pin-wheel escapements, became involved in the Greenwich project.

BOSTON UNIVERSITY EDGED BY HARVARD, 4-3
BOSTON, Mass. - The Harvard hockey team showed a little more "power" than the Terriers on Tuesday night (November 21st) and the result was B.U.'s fourth straight loss-a 4-3 decision to the Crimson at Walter Brown Arena.
The Terriers, who head to the University of Denver on Friday night (November 24th) and Colorado College on Saturday night (November 25th) for their Thanksgiving weekend, are now 2-6-1.
All seven goals in Tuesday night's game were scored on the power play-Harvard was 4-of-7, while the Terriers were 3-for-7, and different players scored all seven of the goals.
With his team trailing 2-0 in the second period, junior Dan Cavanaugh (Springfield) tallied at 8:47 of the period to cut the Terriers' deficit to 2-1.
The Crimson got the goal back with just 25 seconds to play in the period, as the Terriers entered the third period trailing 3-1.
B.U. scored twice in the third period, but it was not enough as the Crimson tallied once.
