Monge's Procedure The first attempt to represent a three-dimensional object in a two-dimensional drawing is by means of some pictorial view, such as perspective, isometric, or oblique views. In any such attempt, some information is necessarily lost, and the object is only partially or ambiguously represented. Antiquity used graphical methods almost exclusively in engineering calculations, a fact that was almost unrecognized, because of the perishability of such representations, and that the work was for practical, not literary, ends. Here and there, survivals have given a glimpse into the extensive development of these methods, in architecture and shipbuilding. Among these methods was the use of two coordinated drawings to present three-dimensional information, as mentioned by Vitruvius. Monge revived this science, extending it to the solution of many types of problems, and showing how it gives a complete solution of the problem. We will show a simple application here that will give an idea of how it is carried out. In the Figure, AB is a plan view of, say, a mine shaft. Next Gaspard Monge: Founder of descriptive geometry GASPARD MONGE was born on May 10, 1746 at Beaune, France, the son of an astute knife-grinder. He received his education at the college in Lyons, which was run by a religious order. Impressed by his brilliance, the College superiors begged him to join their order. But his father did not give the consent. In 1762, Monge constructed a wonderful map of Beaune, employing the surveying instruments made by him for the purpose. An officer from the corps of engineers, who saw this map, used his influence to permit Monge to attend some courses at the military school, Mezieres. Fortunately for Monge's future career as a scientist, the officer omitted to state that on account of his humble birth, Monge would never be commissioned. An important part of the regular course at Mezieres was the theory of fortification, in which the problem was to design the works so that no part should be exposed to the direct fire of the enemy. Monge handed in his solution which was checked and found to be correct. He soon became a member of the teaching staff in 1768. This was the beginning of descriptive geometry, which is described later. For 15 years it was a jealously guarded military secret.

Monge oli tõepoolest sündinud geomeeter, kellel oli ületamatu anne keerukaid ruumilisi seoseid näitlikult kujutada. Üks olulisemaid õppeaineid oli fortifikatsioon, kindlustuste ehitamise teooria. Projekteerimisel tuli silmas pidada, et ükski kindlustuse osa ei satuks vaenlase otsetule alla. Selleks oli vaja lõputult arvutada. Ühel päeval esitas G. Monge probleemi lahenduse. Töö anti kellelegi staabiohvitserile hindamiseks. Kuna viimane ei uskunud, et seda ülesannet on võimalik nii lühikese ajaga lahendada, ei hakanudki ta esitatut kontrollima: "Miks peaksin end vaevama oletatava lahenduse keeruka ümberarvutamisega? Ma usun heasse arvutamisoskusesse, aga mitte imesse." Monge ei andnud järele ja selgitas, et ta ei kasutanud probleemi lahendamisel aritmeetikat. Visalt võitles ta selle eest, et teda kontrollitaks. Lõpuks seda tehtigi ja leiti kõik õige olevat.
