Plexus leads the way with the return of their terminator-esque drummer Toby Ralph (man or machine?), his first time back with them in Boston since January. Plexus is the essence of livetronica: Ferocious drum'n'bass beats with some breaks; thick treble coming in from synth layers, luscious guitar melodies, and tripped-out samples; bass all over the place; and though putting out a totally electronic vibe, the capacity to jam and play a fully improvised set.
Toby will serve as a bridge, linking together

The Mobius Strip was discovered in 1858 by German mathematician and astronomer August Ferdinand Mobius (1790-1868). The mathematical equation is known as The Mobius Transformation, also known as bilinear transformation or linear fractional transformation. (Webster's dictionary:" A map of the complex plane to itself in which a point "z" is mapped to a point "w" by w=(az+b)/(cz+d), where a,b,c, and d are complex numbers and ad-bc does not equal zero.") It is a continuous loop with one surface and one edge formed by twisting one end of a long, thin rectangular strip 180 degrees (1/2 twist) and attaching this end to the other. This fascinating shape expresses Transformation. Today the Mobius Strip has been chosen as the Universal symbol of recycling. It represents the process of transforming waste materials into useful resources. On a personal level, the Mobius strip represents a willingness to move WITH the constantly changing cycles in our Life process, transforming our challenges into useful solutions. The Mobius Strip reveals planetary transformation,as well. Historically, there has always been Earth
changes,i.e. natural re-structuring of land and ocean masses, tide changes, weather changes, seasonal changes, etc. The Mobius Strip shape is symbolic of eternal change within stillness itself.

  • The Mobius Strip?

  • We know him more for his invention of the Mobius strip , a strip of paper with one end rotated by 180 degrees and connected to the other end, forming a continuous surface, but August Ferdinand Mobius was also an astronomer. Born in 1790 in Germany, he studied law at the University of Leipzig before abandoning it in favor of astronomy. In 1816 he was appointed professor of astronomy at Leipzig and in 1848 became the director of its observatory. But he had a political slant as well. One of his favorite lectures was one in which he delivered the "four color problem": "What is the least number of colors needed on a plane map to separate clearly neighboring political regions?" He maintained that it was 4, and to this day no map requiring 5 colors has been found. This was verified in 1976 using a computer proof.

    TOPOLOGY
A mathematician confided That a Mobius strip is one-sided, And you'll get quite a laugh If you cut one in half, For it stays in one piece when divided. A mathematician named Klein Thought the Mobius strip was divine. Said he, "If you glue The edges of two You'll get a weird bottle like mine." Anonymous
Topology is a branch of geometry which arose in the twentieth-century. Topological questions concern the basic structure of objects rather than size or arrangement. Suppose figures were made of rubber. We can stretch, bend or otherwise distort these figures without tearing them.
The Mobius strip and the Klein bottle are two examples of topological surfaces. The picture above is M.C. Escher's artwork that depicts ants crawling along a Mobius strip.
To construct a Mobius strip, cut out a rectangular strip of paper, approximately 1 inch by 10 inches. Make a half-twist and then tape together the two ends. Begin drawing a line down the center of what appears to be one side. Continue drawing until you eventually reach the spot where you started. The strip is suprisingly one-sided, whereas the piece of paper before the half-twist was two-sided!
Find out what happens when you perform the following experiments.

Mobius A Mobius strip is a band of paper that's deceptively simple in its appearance and exceptionally twisted in its properties. Introduction The properties of a twisted strip of paper depend a great deal on the number of times it is twisted. Counting the twists is an interesting exercise that illustrates Paul's first mathematical principle,"Counting is difficult." Material
    • Several strips of paper ( a good size is 3 cm wide and 30 cm long)
      • if you use brown packing tape with adhesive on one side you can skip the tape below.
scissors tape 2 felt tip pens in different colors
Part 1 Warming up To Do and Notice Look at your the strip of paper. Count the edges: Start coloring an edge at one point with your pen, if you color the entire edge and never have to lift the pen from the paper then the paper has one edge. A pointy vertex does not divide an edge into two parts. Count the sides: Start coloring one side, fill it with color but don't cross over any sharp edges. When you are done, one side will be colored the other will not. So, the strip has 2 sides. A simpler way to test for the number of sides is to draw a line along one side. If any point can be reached from the line without crossing an edge then that point is on the same side as the line. Draw a line on one side of the paper, points on the other side cannot be reached without crossing an edge, this means the paper has two sides.

It is nearly impossible to use CU at 14.4. I have never heard of a case
where anybody gets more than an occasional partial still frame at 14.4. It
is just not enough bandwidth. Like trying to move the ocean through a

make sure your ISP will allow you to connect at that speed. Otherwise I'd
stick to audio applications (Internet Phone, Intel Internet Phone, etc.)

The exhibition also underlines the power of creative processes in precipitating active doing as much as passive seeing. Thus, a number of the exhibits involve viewer participation. Diogo Teixeira and Eurico do Vale's "Flying Carousel" is a case in point, an installation comprised of a bicycle and a metallic carousel requiring the leg power of the individual in the saddle to creatively power the carousel into a spinning cinema show; a form of filmic umbrella merry-go-round on wheels. As well as installations by these five artists, live performances of music and video projection by the group De Mobius will take place at the Blue Elephant Gallery at 7pm on 30th July, 2nd August and the 5th August.

    The Mobius Time Loop
August Ferdinand Mobius a 19th century German mathematician and astronomer found that by joining the two ends of a piece of paper together to form a loop BUT twisting the ends before they were joined a continuous loop of only one side was formed. With the Grandmother paradox we essentially have a time with a Grandmother and a time without. Also if you follow the description in quotes at the top of this page it appears that one follows the other and loops back to the beginning. We can use the Mobius Strip and adapt it to show a possible interpretation of how Time is twisted in the Grandmother paradox. This is difficult to show on a two-dimensional computer screen or paper so you will need to construct one by printing out the diagram below. You will need scissors, sticky tape and glue. Follow the instructions and then read the description that follows below.
    Description
Starting at point A in 1960 the Grandmother is 40. Move to the right through the twentieth century to 1990 when the Grandmother dies at 70. Then in 1999 the Time Traveller makes his trip to 1930 and kills his Grandmother. Follow along moving to the right again through the twentieth century noticing how this time there is no Grandmother and continue all the way to 1999. This time there is no time trip because there is no time traveller. He was not born because his Grandmother did not exist So he could not kill his Grandmother so she does exist and she is 10. Move to the right again through the twentieth century back to point A in 1960 where the Grandmother is 40. And so on......
