Richard von Mises was born in Lvov when it was under Austrian control and known as Lemberg. His father, Arthur Edler von Mises, worked for the Austrian State Railways as a technical expert and his mother was Adele von Landau. Richard was the second son of the family, the elder son being Ludwig von Mises who went on to become as famous as Richard. Ludwig, who was about eighteen months older than Richard, went on to become an economist who contributed to liberalism in economic theory and made his belief in consumer power an important part of that theory. Richard also had a younger brother, who died as an infant. He was professor of applied mathematics at Strasburg from 1909 until 1918, although this was a period which was interrupted by World War I. Even before the outbreak of the war von Mises had qualified as a pilot and he gave the first university course on powered flight in 1913. When war broke out von Mises joined the Austro-Hungarian army and piloted aircraft. He had lectured on the design of aircraft before the war and he now put this into practice leading a team which constructed a 600-horsepower plane for the Austrian army in 1915. After the end of the war von Mises was appointed to a new chair of hydrodynamics and aerodynamics at the Technische Hochschule in Dresden. Appointed in 1919 he soon moved again, this time to the University of Berlin to become the director of the new Institute of Applied Mathematics which had been set up there.

Richard von Mises, known as a statistician, aerodynamicist, and mathematician, was born in Lemburg, Austria in April of 1883. He lived with his parents and older brother. His father worked as a railway engineer and held a doctorate of technical sciences. Early in his life, von Mises attended the Akademische Gymnasium and graduated with honors in Latin and mathematics. He furthered his education at the Vienna Technical University as an undergraduate and doctorate student. He concentrated his studies in mechanical engineering T o start his career, he became a professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Strassburg, Germany. Throughout his educational experiences and career, he believed in the logical reasoning of problems by using one’s past experiences. He used this idea in his experiences in flight mechanics, other teaching positions, and compiled numerous technical works, including his founding of the journal Zeitschrift für angewandte Mathematik und Mechanik Von Mises’ work in engineering helped him view applied mathematics as the essential link between theory and scientific observation.

V roce 1944 tam získal stolici aerodynamiky a aplikované matematiky.

Stress
Stress is defined as force per unit area. This is one of the most basic engineering quantities.
Shear Stress
Shear stress has the same units as normal stress (force / area) but represents a stress that acts parallel to the surface (cross section). This is different from normal stress which acts perpendicular (normal) to the cross section. Torsion is a force that causes shear stress but this is not the only force that can cause shear stress. For example, a beam that supports a shear force also has a shear stress over the section (even withour torsion).
Strain
Strain is the change in length per unit length. It is normally computed as (L f - L ) / L where L f is the final length and L is the initial length. When testing materials, a gage length is normally specified known; this represents L
Strain Rate
When testing a material, it is normally important to know how quickly (or slowly) it is being deformed or loaded. One way to report this is the amount of strain that occurs in a unit of time which is termed the strain rate. Because strain is dimension-less, units for this quantity are

    http://www.cartage.org.lb/en/themes/Biographies/MainBiographies/M/Mises/1.html
Mises, Richard von Austrian mathematician and aerodynamicist who made valuable contributions to statistics and the theory of probability, in which he emphasized the idea of random distribution.
Von Mises was born in Lemberg (now Lvov, Ukraine), and educated at Vienna. He was professor at the University of Strassburg (now Strasbourg, France) 1909-18. In 1920 he was appointed director of the Institute for Applied Mathematics at Berlin, but with the coming to power of Adolf Hitler in 1933, von Mises emigrated to Turkey and taught at the University of Istanbul. In 1939 he went to the USA to join the faculty of Harvard, where he was professor from 1944.
Von Mises's first interest was fluid mechanics, especially in relation to aerodynamics and aeronautics. He learned to fly and in 1913 gave the first university course in the mechanics of powered flight. He made significant improvements in boundary-layer-flow theory and aerofoil design and, in 1915, built an aeroplane for the Austrian military. During World War I he served as a pilot.
Von Mises was drawn into the field of probability theory and statistics this subject by his association (from 1907 until the 1920s) with the Viennese school of logical positivism. He came to the conclusion that a probability cannot be simply the limiting value of a relative frequency, and added the proviso that any event should be irregularly or randomly distributed in the series of occasions in which its probability is measured.

Austrian Economists as Denizens of the Popular Press
Should scholars bother to write for the popular press? Of course. Mises wrote: "Economics must not be relegated to classrooms and statistical offices and must not be left to esoteric circles. It is the philosophy of human life and action and concerns everybody and everything. It is the pith of civilization and of man's human existence."

Margit von Mises Luis de Molina Oskar Morgenstern Wilhelm Röpke Jean-Baptiste Say Richard von Strigl A.R.J. Turgot ... Phillip Wicksteed Friedrich von Wieser The 1920s and 1930s were a glorious era in the history of the Austrian School of economics. In those days, the city of Vienna saw the first genuine culture of scholars working in the tradition established by Carl Menger, and this culture radiated throughout the rest of the German-speaking world and into other countries. Many important works of this period have been translated into English, in particular, the books by Ludwig von Mises and F. A. Hayek, and also the works of other scholars like Fritz Machlup, Gottfried von Haberler, Oskar Morgenstern, Franz Cuhel, Hans Mayer, Paul Rosenstein-Rodan, and Leo Schonfeld-Illy. Among the pioneering works of this time that have hitherto not have been accessible to the anglophone public is that by Richard von Strigl. Like many other luminaries of pre-World War II Austrian intellectual and artistic life, Richard Ritter von Strigl was a native of former Moravia (which is today a part of the Czech Republic) where he was born February 7, 1891. He studied at the University of Vienna and was admitted as a very young man to the famous private seminar of Eugen von Bohm-Bawerk, which had produced a whole generation of promising economists, such as Otto Bauer, Nicolai Bukharin, Ludwig von Mises, Otto Neurath, and Joseph Schumpeter.
