WHO WAS GERARDUS MERCATOR? Gerardus Mercator ("Ger-ARD-us Murr-KATE-ur") really was Gerhard Kremer. The name by which he was known was the Latin form. [My Latin name would be Writasaurus Brilliantus.] He lived from 1512 to 1594, and was a Flemish geographer, mathematician, and cartographer. The Mercator map projection is described by the Concise Columbia Encyclopedia as "a cylindrical map projection of the features of the earth's surface that can be constructed only mathematically. The parallels of latitude, which on the globe are equal distances apart, are drawn with increasing separation as their distance from the equator increases in order to preserve shapes. However, areas are exaggerated with increasing distance from the equator. For instance, Greenland is shown with enormously exaggerated size, although its shape is preserved. The poles themselves cannot be shown on a Mercator projection. This type of projection gives an incorrect impression of the relative sizes of the world's countries." Using a Mercator projection of the world, trace the outer edge of the continents that bound the Atlantic Ocean. Cut out the forms of the continents. Now use the pieces like a jigsaw puzzle to put the continents together so the margins match and the the Atlantic Ocean is no longer between them.

MAP MAKER MERCATOR In 1560 Gerardus Mercator made a very bad real estate investment. An unscrupulous realtor informed him of 10,000 square miles of virgin land for sale near beautiful downtown Qaqortoq on the grand and magnificent island of Kalaallit Nunaat. Mercator could have the land for 'next to nothing.' "Well, just how much is 'next to nothing'?" Mercator asked the realtor. The realtor replied with a smoothness born of many years in the business, "Listen, the term 'next to nothing' is more than just a perfect description of the price and I'll let you steal this parcel for 1000 bucks!" "What a deal!" Exclaimed Gerardus as he whipped out his wallet and quickly pealed off 10 crisp new 100 buck notes. He couldn't believe his luck. 10,000 square miles of property for about the price of an acre in his homeland of Flanders. True, he had bought it sight unseen, but still, what a deal! At home that evening he told his wife the good news. "You did what?!" she screamed. "You bought land in Kalaallit Nunaat! Do you know what another name for Kalaallit Nunaat is? It's Greenland! Here look at this. It's one of your maps." Gerardus perused the map his wife handed him. "See," she pointed. "Right there. Almost at the north pole. Out there in a frozen ocean all by itself next to nothing!

Mercator Projections
Figure 1. The Mercator Projection is conformal and shows loxodromes as straight lines. The Mercator projection is one of the oldest, most influential, and most misunderstood projections of all time. This projection is so steeped in history that it is impossible to appreciate the Mercator projection without knowing something about its history.
Figure 2. Gerardus Mercator (1512 - 1594). The Mercator projection was developed in 1569 by one of the most famous cartographers of all time, Gerardus Mercator (that's a 16 th century engraving of him in Figure 2). Mercator (whose birth name was Gerhard Kramer; in his day, if you wanted to present yourself as an educated person, you latinized your name; hence Gerhard Kramer became Gerardus Mercator) was born in Rupelmonde, Germany on March 5, 1512 and died in Duisburg, Germany on December 2, 1594. His works revolutionized ocean navigation. Prior to Mercator's 1585 publication of an atlas covering just about all of the known world (indeed, it was with this work that Mercator coined the word atlas to describe a collection of maps; the word did not exist prior to that time), ocean navigation was largely hit-or-miss. Sea captains navigated from point to point by either following landmarks visible on shore or by following incredibly vague verbal instructions (e.g., "sail into the summer wind for four hours to clear the rocks at the harbor's entrance, then turn to starboard and sail broad to the wind for a week or so to reach your destination"). This changed with the introduction of maps based on Mercator's projection. For the first time, sea captains had maps showing

Cerrar

Mercator
The famous conformal cylindrical projection. It is excellent for the limited purpose of marine navigation and very poor for thematic presentation. See the Transverse Mercator topic for the transverse aspect of this projection. Scale True along the Equator and along two chosen standard parallels equidistant from the Equator. Increases with distance from the Equator to infinity at the poles. Scale is constant along any given parallel; same scale at parallel of opposite sign (north +, south -) and is the same in all directions near any given point. Distortion Infinitesimally small circles of equal size on the globe appear as circles on the map (indicating conformality) but increase in size away from the Equator (indicating area distortion). Great distortion of area in polar regions. Conformality (and therefore local angle preservation) fails at the poles. Low distortion near the Equator. Usage Designed and recommended for navigational usage because of straight rhumb lines; standard for marine charts. Recommended and used for conformal mapping of regions predominantly bordering the Equator. The Mercator projection attained great fame because of its utility for marine navigation. One unfortunate result of this fame is that it subsequently was frequently and inappropriately used as a thematic world map in atlases and for wall charts. It presents a highly misleading view of the world because of the excessive distortion of area away from the poles. The classic schoolroom map of the Earth in Mercator projection that has convinced generations of school children that Greenland is as large as North America is a case in point.

Provenance Purchased by the University Library in The Hague in May 1805 together with four other, identically bound volumes. Atlas . The second edition appeared in 1589, with the addition of a fourth part. The first complete edition was compiled by his heirs in 1595 one year after his death. Walter Ghim, mayor of Duisburg, the city where Mercator had lived for a long time, wrote the accompanying Mercator biography. It was the first time that a book of maps was referred to as an Atlas . Commercially speaking, however, the Atlas was not a success thanks to formidable competition from the Theatrum orbis terrarum by Abraham Ortelius, published in 1570, which by the end of the century had been reprinted more than twenty times. It was thanks to another Fleming, Jodocus Hondius (1563-1612), that the Atlas got a new lease of life. In 1604, he purchased the copper plates from Gerard Mercator's grandson. This transaction had a decisive influence on the Hondius' career. Up until that year he had worked mainly as a craftsman: engraver, stamp cutter, instrument maker and a globe maker. In 1605, when he republished Mercator's Ptolemaic charts, he became a major publisher. The first reprint of Mercator's Atlas appeared under his auspices in 1606. The Latin texts were provided by his brother-in-law Petrus Montanus. The work numbered 143 maps, including 36 that Hondius had added to the original Mercator maps, a number of which he produced himself. The new maps, which varied considerably in quality, were predominantly of the world outside Europe. After all, it was precisely in the sixteenth century that the discoveries by the Spanish and Portuguese in particular had radically altered the map of the world (also see

In 1570, Gerardus Mercator assembled his Atlas of Europe in preparation for a grand tour by the Crown Prince of Cleves. The book disappeared until 1967, when it was purchased unrecognized by a Dutch collector from an antiquarian bookstore in Brussels. The original was acquired by the British Museum for 1.2 million dollars and is available for viewing by special appointment only. In 1998 Walking Tree Press published a restored replica, allowing the public to see the first detailed maps of early modern Europe. Though pricey, the sumptuous volume has received universally glowing reviews.

Gerardus Mercator's original name was Gerard de Cremere. He was educated at 'sHertogenbosch in the Netherlands, then, in 1530, he entered the University of Louvain where he studied the humanities and philosophy. He graduated from Louvain with an M.A. in 1532.
After graduating, Mercator began to have worries on how to reconcile the account of the origin of the universe given in the Bible with that given by Aristotle. He travelled to a number of places while going through this personal crisis including Antwerp and Mechelen. His travels did little for his religious worries but gave him a deep interest in geography.
In 1535-1536 Mercator working in Louvain with Myrica and with Frisius constructed a terrestrial globe. In 1537 they constructed a globe of the stars. Mercator produced a map of Palestine (1537), a map of the world with a new projection (1538) and a map of Flanders (1540). Mercator was charged with heresy in 1544. This was partly due to his Protestant beliefs, partly due to the fact that he travelled so widely to acquire data for his maps that suspicions were aroused. He spent seven months in prison. He was released, mainly due to strong support from the University of Louvain, and in 1552 he moved to Duisburg where he opened a cartographic workshop.

BEKNOPTE BIOGRAFIE VAN GERARDUS MERCATOR
(cartograaf (Rupelmonde 1512 - Duisburg 1594))
