Flat maps of the world are often shown in what is called a Mercator projection. Such maps are named after Gerardus Mercator, the foremost geographer of the 16th century. He also introduced the word atlas to refer to a bound collection of maps.
Mercator was born on March 5, 1512, in Rupelmonde, Flanders (now in Belgium). He began his education at a school operated by the Brothers of the Common Life in Hertogenbosch. From there he went to the University of Louvain, from which he graduated with a master's degree in 1532. Two years of further study turned his interest to geography. He learned astronomy, geography, and mathematics from Gemma Frisius, the leading mathematician of the Low Countries. Mercator also studied engraving, calligraphy, and instrument making all talents he later used effectively in mapmaking. Beginning in 1537 he produced a series of maps and a book on italic lettering. His work was interrupted in 1544, when he was arrested and detained for seven months on a charge of religious heresy.
In order to continue working without interference from the authorities, he moved to Duisburg (now in Germany). It was there in 1569 that he used the projection for which he is famous on a cylindrical map of the world. He preferred the straight-line map because it enabled sailors to steer a course over long distances without frequent changes in

GERARDUS MERCATOR
Renaissance mapmaker
INTRODUCTION
Gerhard Kremer, or Gerardus Mercator was the leading mapmaker of the 15th Century.
BACKGROUND
Gerardus Mercator was born March 5, 1518, in Dumpelunde, Flanders (Belgium). He died Dec. 2, 1594, in Duisburg, Duchy of Cleve (Germany). His original name was Gerard de Kremer. Gerardus's father was a shoemaker in Flanders. He was educated at Shertogenbosch located in the Netherlands. In 1530 he entered the University of Levine where he studied philosophy. He later graduated after studying mathematics. After school he studied astronomy privately. He also travelled to a number of places (including Antwerp and Mechelen) while going through a personal crisis. Mercator returned to Levine where he studied mathematics. He spent seven months in jail but was released, mainly due to strong support from the University of Levine. In 1552 he moved to Duisburg where he opened a cartographic workshop.
ACCOMPLISHMENTS
Mercator's disciplines were cartography and geography. From 1535-1536 Mercator made terrestrial globes for several rich individuals. In 1537 Mercator constructed a globe of the stars. He was the first to use longitude and latitude for sailors. Mercator was also very good at making an accurate map of Western Europe. Later Mercator lectured at Duisburg where he took some time off to make

    Mercator projection
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. The Mercator projection is a map projection devised by Gerardus Mercator in Like all map projections attempting to fit a curved surface onto a flat sheet, the shape of the map is a distortion of the true layout of the Earth's surface. The Mercator projection wildly distorts area: Greenland is presented as having roughly the same size as Africa , when in fact Africa is approximately 13 times larger than Greenland.
Mercator projection: public domain Online Map Creation This is done for an important reason: the projection is a conformal map , that is, it preserves angle . Any straight line on a Mercator map is a line of constant bearing , a loxodrome or rhumb line . This makes it particularly useful to navigators even though the plotted route is usually not a great circle (shortest distance) route. In the era of sailing ships, the time of travel was subject to the elements and hence the distance to travel was not as important as the direction to take especially since

    Gerardus Mercator 1512-1594
Gerardus Mercator was a geographer, cartographer and mathematician born in Flanders. He is best known for a new mapping technique that bears his name, the Mercator projection. The quality of his maps made them a copy source for generations of mapmakers.
Gerhard Kremer - alias Gerardius Mercator
Gerard Mercator is something like the grandfather of modern map making. His original name was Gerhard Kremer. Regarding his importance for the history of cartography, he is compared to Ptolemy, the ancient scholar from Alexandria in Egypt. Mercator was born in Rupelmonde in Flanders and had studied geography, cartography and mathematics at the University of Leuven (Louvain) in Belgium. He published his first map in 1537 at the age of 25 - a map of Palestine. From 1537 to 1540 Gerardus Mercator surveyed and mapped Flanders. In 1538 he made and published his first world map. It was based on the Ptolemy map. The maps by Ptolemy had been completely lost in Europe during the dark Middle Ages. Thanks to Arab scholars, some of the Ptolemy maps were saved and came back to Europe during the Renaissance period.

    Historical Maps Netherlands
Southwest England by Mercator In the sixteenth and seventeenth century Holland was a powerful nation in overseas trade. In 1581 the Dutch became independent from the Spanish king. In an atmosphere free of religious suppression Antwerp and Amsterdam became centers for the arts and science. And Dutch cartographers
and map makers were as dominant in Europe as were Dutch ships on the seven seas of the world.
    Gerardus Mercator 1512-1594
Gerardus Mercator is something like the father of modern map making. His original name was Gerhard Kremer. At that time Latin was the lingua franca of the scholars and many adopted a Latin name just as it is fashionable today to use English as an International language.
