Geometric models of the Menger sponge level 3 plain level 4 efficient level 3 crumpled Introduction The following is an attempt to acquaint the reader with a fractal object called the Sierpinski gasket. The gasket was originally described in two dimensions but represents a family of objects in other dimensions. This family of objects will be discussed in dimensions 1, 2, 3, and an attempt will be made to visualise it in the 4th dimension. Cantor set or Dust The nineteenth century mathematician Georg Cantor became fascinated by the infinite number of points on a line segment. The set of points described here has been attributed to Cantor because of his attempts to imagine what happens when an infinite number of line segments are removed from an initial line interval. To generate the Cantor set start with a closed interval [0,1] (includes the points and 1). On the first iteration replace the interval with 3 equal length pieces and remove the middle third, or ]1/3, 2/3[ (excludes the points 1/3 and 2/3) Subsequent iterations involve removing the middle portion of the remaining line segments.. The gap removed each time is usually called a trema from the Latin tremes = termite.

History of Economics Services sponsored by the History of Economics Society Monthly Guest Editorial for HES The Economists' Papers Project at Duke University A Sample from the Don Patinkin Papers Stephen Meardon Previous contributions to this editorials list have argued for writing the history of economics with a more sociological or more contextual approach; a genuine "historical study" as opposed to an extended "review essay." James Henderson urges us to consider that "economic knowledge is created in real time" and with this in mind, to use research materials that may reflect knowledge creation better than the obvious primary sources. Roy Weintraub awaits the day when "writing and research in the history of economic thought will increasingly approach the standards of historical writing in the history of physics or the history of mathematics or the history of medicine." A likely way to reach these ends is to dig through archives, the unpublished personal and professional papers of individuals and institutions. But to do so requires familiarity with details of the relevant archives: their locations, their contents, and a very concrete idea of how they can be used to thicken one's research. The purpose of this editorial is to provide some of these details for one large archive in particular: the Economists' Papers Project at Duke University. In an attempt to achieve the purpose with a bit of flair, a small selection from the archive a 1957-58 correspondence between Don Patinkin and John Hicks, drawn from the Patinkin papers has been scanned for

A BRIEF HISTORY OF TSP by Nigel Cummings In the April 2000 issue of this Newsletter I produced an article about the application of insect behavioural patterns to common OR problems. In particular I wrote about Marco Dorigo and his team at the Free University of Brussels, and their work with ant-like agents applied in that instance to the travelling salesman problem (TSP). At this time it occurred to me that the majority of OR oriented ‘minds’ had been presented with the TSP or variations of, for a very considerable time. TSP is a problem which is both short and easy to state: given a finite number of ‘cities’ along with the cost of travel between each pair of them, and with the object of finding the cheapest way of visiting all the cities and returning the original point of departure. (The travel costs are symmetric from the point of view that travelling from city X to city Y costs just as much as travelling from Y to X - the manner of visiting all the ‘cities’ is simply the order in which the cities are visited.) I began to wonder when the original TSP had surfaced? Who thought of it? Was it called the Travelling Salesman Problem? Who produced the first solutions? During a period of research which I expected to be brief, I came across increasing numbers of references to the solution of the TSP and TSP – like problems. I was surprised to learn that the mathematician and economist Karl Menger, perhaps best know for his interests in hyperbolic, probabilistic geometry, and the algebra of functions had publicised TSP among his colleagues in Vienna in the 1920’s. It seemed then, that the TSP has spanned at least 9 decades! In 1932 Menger published "Das botenproblem", in
