Edward McShane was the son of Augustus McShane, a medical doctor. His mother was Harriet Kenner Butler, who had been a school teacher. After attending school in New Orleans, McShane entered Tulane University. There he studied mathematics and engineering, graduating in 1925 with both Science and Engineering degrees. After completing his first degrees (for he had two!), McShane continued to study at Tulane for his Master's degree in mathematics while teaching mathematics as an instructor. It is noted in [2] that he:- ... once remarked that he had never regretted his decision to become a mathematician rather than an engineer. With the award of a Master's degree from Tulane in 1927, McShane went to the University of Chicago to undertake studies for his doctorate. However, financial difficulties caused him to interrupt his studies and take out the session 1928-29 when he taught at the University of Wichita to earn some money. Returning to Chicago, where his studies were supervised by Bliss , he completed work on his thesis and he was awarded his PhD in 1930.

McShane was born in New Orleans on May 10, 1904, and grew up there. His father, Augustus, was a medical doctor and his mother, Harriet, a former schoolteacher. He graduated from Tulane University in 1925, receiving simultaneously bachelor of engineering and bachelor of science degrees, as well as election to Phi Beta Kappa. Edward James McShane, mathematician
McShane was a very versatile applied mathematician. It was his direct definition of a stochastic integral, in classical probability, that is connected with our own work, in [86], 1987. In his book, Integration Theory , McShane is able to give a construction in which the integrater is not a martingale, but obeys suitable estimates, called "standing conditions". We are able to obtain a similar condition, and result, in quantum theory, while at the same time, sharpening the conclusion. GO to my HOME PAGE for more links.

The Open Book page image presentation framework is not designed to replace printed books. Rather, it is a free, browsable, nonproprietary, fully and deeply searchable version of the publication which we can inexpensively and quickly produce to make the material available worldwide. For most effective printing, use the "print" button available on each OpenBook page's tool block. The 300 x 150 dpi PDF linked to it is printable on your local printer.
