(1963) Directed by Andrew McLaglen For people who won’t try to take the movie too seriously, there are plenty of delights. Lots of minor eccentrics abound in the film; Jerry Van Dyke, the nebbish king of all nebbishes, plays a coward who instantly dons glasses at any sign of a fight (and there are lots of fights). He doesn’t have to plead, "You wouldn’t hit a man with glasses, would you?" his expression says it all. As for McClintock, he’s an enlightened cattleman who treats his Spanish-speaking neighbors, the local Indians, and the environment with equal respect. Viewers will be reminded that human decency preceded political correctness, and that in Wayne’s best roles, he defies being pigeon-holed. The most endearing quality, however, is his out-and-out capitalism. When a destitute farmer thanks him for giving him a job, McClintock retorts angrily, "I’m not giving you anything. You’ll do work for me, and I’ll pay you for it. That way neither one of us is beholden to the other." Of course, John Wayne was only reading lines that were written down for him, but only the Duke could have said them with such conviction, God bless him.

Public Works Director Report - Drew Roslund welcomed the new Public Works Director John McClintock. John McClintock reported fixing a couple of large leaks in the last two weeks. During the heavy rainfall there was a major problem with infiltration and overflow of the city collection system. Fortunately, the plants were able to handle the hydraulic load. John McClintock called an electrician in to install a simple device to correct an on going problem with the alarm and float system at the main pump station. State monthly water and sewer report responsibilities were delegated to the operators. Cross training between Waldport and Yachats Public Works staff will begin in the near future to familiarize employees with other operations. Hopefully, this training will create a qualified back-up resource for both cities. Engineers should arrive within the next two weeks to perform the flow monitoring tests.

Senate Reference No. 00-6 Memorial Resolution John Leonard Modic Dr. John Leonard Modic, 80, Emeritus Professor in the Department of English and Linguistics, died on May 9, 2000, after a protracted struggle with many serious ailments. He spent his last days at his home in Fort Wayne, where his children gathered from across the country to be with him. John was a native of Cleveland, Ohio, a city he always remembered with great fondness. He loved to tell stories about growing up there, and many of his experiences found their way into the graceful, humorous fiction he published in Little Magazines. He remained such a loyal follower of his Cleveland teams, the Indians and the Browns, that for a long time after he left that city his friends, when they couldn’t reach him by telephone on Sunday afternoons, might have found him in his driveway listening to a Brown’s game on his car radio, where he got the best reception. During World War II John served with the U.S. Army Air Force in Italy, France, India, and Africa. Classified as "Writer, Military Subjects," he edited and wrote the 324th Fighter Group News and contributed to Stars and Stripes . After the war, his poetry, fiction and humor were published in magazines that included
