Academy Award for Best Picture
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. This page shows the winner first followed by the nominees for that year. Each entry shows the title followed by the production company, and the producer. When the film was produced in a country other than the United States that is shown in parentheses after the production company. The years shown are the production years, thus a reference to 1967 means the Oscars presented in 1968 for movies made in 1967. This award was originally called Best Production

A History of the Multiplier Rule in the Calculus of Variations
Abstract
The multiplier rule is a fundamental tool in the calculus of variations. In modern treatments of the subject, for example in Oskar Bolza's authoritative "Vorlesungen ueber die Variationsrechnung" (1909), the rule is used to provide a general formulation of the variational problem. An application of the rule is required in order to deal with all but the most simple problems. In contrast to the situation in the ordinary calculus or in mechanics, where the rule provides a useful but special method of solution, the multiplier rule in the calculus of variations is a powerful result that occupies a fundamental place in the whole theory. Although methods equivalent to the multiplier rule for special variational problems were developed by Euler and Lagrange in the middle of the eighteenth century, the first general statement of the rule in the calculus of variations was presented by Lagrange in his analysis textbooks of 1797 and 1806. Various justifications of the rule were given throughout the nineteenth century, often without a clear awareness of the mathematical issues involved in a fully acceptable proof. The first proof which incorporated a clear understanding of the mathematical basis of the rule was published by the Leipzig mathematician Adolph Mayer in 1886. In the next thirty years mathematicians would develop several additional and distinct derivations of the rule.

Prior Alfred Mayer
It was at this time that St. John's Abbey was requested to supply priests for a new catholic colony in Saskatchewan. St. John's Abbey suggested to the Cluniac monks that they relocate to Saskatchewan. On Dec. 22, 1902, the four monks in solemn vows met in the rectory of Assumption Parish Church, St. Paul's, Minn., and voted to accept the offer. The four were Prior Alfred Mayer and Frs. Matthias Steger, Benedict Steigenberger and Peter Windschiegl. Prior Alfred lost no time. From Jan. 3-16, 1903, he accompanied Fr. Bruno Doerfler on a trip to inspect the territory. The railway took them to Rosthern. From there they went eastward by horse to identify the location of the new abbey. On Jan. 11, they celebrated the first mass in the colony, in the St. Benedict district (HooDoo), then visited the district 12 miles south and called it Leofeld. Then the two Benedictines visited Bishop Pascal in Prince Albert and got permission to found a monastery in the Price Albert Diocese. By this time 700 homesteads had already been filed in the colony which comprised 50 townships west of the 2nd meridian. On Feb. 25, 1903, Prior Alfred made a second trip, accompanied by Fr. Dominic Hofmann, pastor of Assumption Parish in St. Paul. They travelled eastward as far as Waldsea Lake. Hard, icy snow prevented them from going to visit the site of the homestead already chosen for the monastery. On April 13 Prior Alfred made a third trip to Rosthern and made the necessary arrangements for transferring Cluny Priory to St. Peter's Colony in the spring. No time was to be lost.

List of Original Defendants in the Paramount Case
Subsidiaries and Key Executives Indicted Along with Studios - July 20, 1938 When the Justice Department filed the antitrust suit against the U.S. film industry, eight studio defendants were indicted. The "Big Eight" are listed below (ranked according to size): The Big Five (theatre owners)
  • Paramount Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer (Loew's) Warner Bros. Twentieth Century-Fox RKO
The Little Three (non-theatre owners)
  • Universal Columbia United Artists
Unsatisfied with the unsuccessful attempts to curb the power of the studios, the Justice Department included in the suit all of the major executives and owners associated with the majors. The list includes a number of giants in film and American industry including: Adolph Zukor (once the undisputed czar of Hollywood), David Sarnoff (broadcast pioneer of RCA), Louis B. Mayer (co-founder of MGM), and John D. Hertz (today a household name due to his car rental company). Film aficionados will recognize some other names of more obscure interest, including George Winkler (a key figure in the distribution of Walt Disney's early cartoons) and Charles B. Mintz (famous as the man who "stole" Walt Disney's creation Ozwald the Rabbit, thus prompting the events that caused Disney to invent Mickey Mouse).

Jewish Woman are Coming of Age
For a community that calls itself "the people of the book" we have left too many pages blank, wrote author Letty Cottin Pogrebin. She was referring to the contributions of Jewish women that have gone unheralded for too long. Lately, those pages are being filled by new organizations which promise to change the landscape of Judaism. The Second International Conference on Feminism and Orthodoxy in New York last month brought together nearly 2,000 women who prayed together, and interpreted texts and halacha in ways that will increase their rights and their roles. Speakers at the convention raised many thorny questions: the problem of agunah, women whose husbands refuse to grant them divorces, leaving them bound in unwanted marriages. Another barrier for many women are the male-centered prayers, including one in which the man thanks G-d "who has not created me a woman." Still another issue is Orthodoxy's silence about premarital sex. The progress is not that these issues have been resolved, but that they are being discussed and reinterpreted for today's observant women.

- Samuel Goldwyn, co-founder of MGM M arcus Loew (1870-1927) was born to Austrian parents in New York City. A school dropout at the age of nine, Loew showed a talent for business by developing a chain of penny arcades. For a time he was in a nickelodeon partnership with another film magnate-to-be, Adolph Zukor . By 1912 Loew's Theatrical Enterprises consisted of 400 cinemas all across the country. Loew created Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer when he bought Metro Pictures in 1920, adding a controlling interest in Goldwyn Pictures and Louis B. Mayer Pictures in 1924. Goldwyn Pictures was the company created in 1916 by Samuel Goldfish (1882-1974) in partnership with Edgar Selwyn. Goldfish liked the new name so much, he legally changed his name to Goldwyn in 1918. (Samuel Goldfish wasn't his real name either, but an anglicized version of the name he had been born with in Warsaw: Schmuel Gelbfisz.) The Polish-born, Jewish Goldwyn preferred to work independently and did not take part in the new MGM deal. In 1923 he began his own company called Samuel Goldwyn Productions which soon became known for such quality productions as William Wyler's The Best Years of Our Lives Louis B. Mayer (1885-1957) was born Lazar Meir in Ukraine, not far from Kiev. His Jewish parents are thought to have been of Austro-Hungarian origin. Suffering from repeated anti-Jewish pogroms, the family left for England in 1886 and then to Canada and the U.S. Moving up from a single nickelodeon in 1907, within ten years Mayer had formed his own production company. When Marcus Loew formed MGM, Mayer became vice president and general manager, a position he held until 1951.
