US physicist and engineer who, in 1946, constructed the first general-purpose computer, the ENIAC, in collaboration with John Eckert . Their company was bought by Remington Rand 1950, and they built the UNIVAC 1 computer 1951 for the US census. The work on ENIAC was carried out by the two during World War II, and was commissioned to automate the calculation of artillery firing tables for the US Army. In 1949 Mauchly and Eckert designed a small-scale binary computer, BINAC, which was faster and cheaper to use. Punched cards were replaced with magnetic tape, and the computer stored programs internally.

Mauchly was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, and studied at Johns Hopkins University, becoming professor of physics at Ursinus College in Collegeville, Pennsylvania. In 1941 he moved to the Moore School of Electrical Engineering of the University of Pennsylvania, and became principal consultant on the ENIAC project. A dispute over patent policy with the Moore School caused Mauchly and Eckert to leave and set up a partnership 1948. Mauchly was a consultant to Remington Rand (later Sperry Rand) 1950-59 and again from 1973, after setting up his own consulting company 1959.

A new documentary feature about the invention of the first electronic computer.
John Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert were the inventors of ENIAC, widely considered the first electronic computer. With its grand unveiling in l946, that large, blinking contraption set the public's imagination reeling like never before Would this machine really be able to take over human tasks? Would there actually be use for such a thing? Mauchly: The Computer and the Skateboard tells the story of what happens to the inventor as the huge potential of his invention begins to dawn on those around him: from the triumphant unveiling and first successful operations to the crushing blow of being stripped of the patent. Co-directors Jim Reed, who is Mauchly's grandson, and Paul David weave archival footage together with interviews of Mauchly's colleagues and friends to create an eclectic homage to Mauchly and a new perspective on the history of computation. The backbone of the film is commentary by Mauchly's widow Kay, who was hired as a young mathematician to do calculations on the brand new ENIAC and fell in love with its inventor. One of the original "Women of the ENIAC "the world's first computer programmers she shares her lucid understanding of computer history along with intimate biographical anecdotes to provide an insider's picture of the the project's genesis and progression.

John W. Mauchly the man and the machine By Michael T. Ryan In Tom Stoppard's Arcadia, Valentine, a young scientist, muses over a conundrum: "The ordinary-sized stuff which is our lives, the things people write poetry about - clouds - daffodils - waterfalls - and what happens in a cup of coffee when the creme goes in - these things are full of mystery, as mysterious to us as the heavens were to the Greeks. We're better at predicting events at the edge of the galaxy or inside the nucleus of an atom than whether it'll rain on auntie's garden party three Sundays from now. Because the problem turns out to be different. We can't even predict the next drip from a dripping tap when it gets irregular. Each drip sets up the conditions for the next, the smallest variation blows the prediction apart, and the weather is unpredictable the same way, will always be unpredictable." No one would have appreciated the force of Valentine's remarks more than John W. Mauchly. Attempting to solve "the problem of the weather" was an issue he wrestled with for a good part of his career. It was one of a number of projects that fueled his interest in computing machines, and one of several problems that the ENIAC was to have solved.

John Williams Mauchly (1907-1980)

I Claim to Fame
John W. Mauchly and J. Presper Eckert were the two principle inventors of the ENIAC computer, the first large-scale general-purpose electronic computer. ENIAC is an acronym for "Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer," built at the University of Pennsylvania's Moore School of Electrical Engineering. As a general-purpose computer to solve a wide range of calculations, this distinguished the ENIAC from earlier automated calculating machines designed for single problem-solving applications. They began the ENIAC in 1943 and completed the ENIAC in 1946.
The ENIAC was introduced to the public on Valentine's day,14 February 1946.
The ENIAC 's technical specifications :
  • took up 3,000 cubic feet weighted 30 tons used 18,000 vacuum tubes and 70,000 registers required more than 170 kilowatts of power had a random access memory capacity of about 1,000 information bits used punched cards to store data
The ENIAC was used by the U.S. Army for military calculations in the World War II.
