Home George Mason High School The Most Challenging and Demanding Public High School in the Washington Area and # 2 in the USA (according to Newsweek) For each of the past five years George Mason High School has been listed as "the most challenging" public school in the area by Jay Mathews of the Washington Post. The top five of the area high schools are listed below for 1998-2002. In the March 13, 2000 issue of Newsweek Mr. Mathews expanded his index nationwide. "Challenging kids by encouraging them to take tough high-school courses produces students who can succeed later in college". The top ten schools nationwide are listed below. In the Washington Post Magazine , March 22, 1998 Jay Mathews attempted to determine "which area public high schools challenge their students most". Town of Metomen Brandon Special Census, 1877 Fond du Lac County, Wisconsin In 1927, the Brandon Times republished a special census of the residents of Brandon conducted in 1877 as a part of the petition to incorporate the village. Unlike the original, the census has been alphabetized on family name for ease of reference. Within families, however, the names have been left in their original order. Numbers to the left of the names have been added and reflect the original sequence of families in the census. With those exceptions, the names and the text from the 1927 article follow as written. The article was provided courtesy of Twilah DeBoer of the Brandon Historical Society. Land in Georgia The Pine Barrens Speculation and Yazoo Land Fraud Until 1803 Georgia distributed land based on the "headright" system. Each head of family had the "right" to 200 acres of land for himself and 50 acres of land for each member of his family, up to 1000 acres. After the Revolutionary War a number of governors signed land grants of significantly greater amounts than the law allowed. These grants, most of which were signed by Governors George Walton, George Mathews, George Handley, Edward Telfair and Jared Irwin, served to fuel land speculation that would briefly put Georgia in the national spotlight. Governor Mathews granted a million and a half acres to a single man. In Montgomery County Richmond Dawson received grants of 987,000 acres, James Shorter received grants of 1,219,000 acres and Micajah Vassar received grants of 458,000 acres of land. These grants alone totaled 2,664,000 acres of land in a county with an area of only 407,680 acres of land. By the end of his term outstanding land grants totaled three times the amount of land available in Georgia. In the early 1790’s lands "rich in hickory and oak with streams..." were sold to investors caught up in the intense land speculation fever sweeping the country. From the descriptions the land would be suitable for farming. Actually the land was a pine barren that covered 4 counties. The Pine Barren Scandal was quickly overshadowed in 1795 by the Yazoo speculative land fraud. The Yazoo Land Fraud and the Pine Barren Speculation are two episodes of Georgia history that are not only frequently misunderstood but often merged.

Posted November 1, 2000 George Mathews I am running because I haven’t seen a more qualified person step up to the position. I believe I am best qualified for the following reasons: I understand the business of the chair through my participation in most of the national conventions in the '90s. This is where most of the business of our organization is conducted. I think you need to have experienced this in order to run it. I have worked closely with the current chairman and fully understand the requirements of the position. I would advocate conducting more meetings with the Masters officers through conference calls and Internet exchange. Also, I would work with the other officers more as a TEAM , give more responsibility to the Vice Chair and consult more with the secretary, treasurer and other officers. Delegate other tasks to people who have the time, skill and desire. I would like to have a team-building day with the whole Masters Committee prior to each National Convention. As an athlete who has competed at all levels (local, regional, national and international), I understand what USATF Masters
