What makes a slide rule tick? It's all about logarithms
Slide rules work through the magic of logarithms. Logarithms, are, in essence, the power to which a base (usually 10) must be raised to produce a given number. If the base is 10, the logarithm of 1,000 is 3; the logarithm of 10,000 is 4 and the logarithm of 100,000 is 5. A slide rule consists of two logarithmic scales which slide relative to each other. The multiplication and division of numbers can be achieved by adding or subtracting the logarithms of the numbers, which are represented as lengths on the scale. These lengths vary over the span of the scale. ``If you if want to make own slide rule, take two guitars and line them up,'' suggested Robert Osserman, special projects director for the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley. The logarithmic distances marked on a slide rule are ``...like the frets on a guitar. The distances between them get smaller and smaller as you go up the guitar neck. Each one is a fixed fraction of the previous one.''

66. Uutiset - Ajassa: Laskutikku On Keräilijälleen Tieteen Ja Tekniikan Kirkkain K
Vähitellen logaritmitaulujen ja erilaisten puutikkuversioiden jälkeennykyaikaisen laskutikun kehitti amedee mannheim vuonna 1859.
http://www.helsinginsanomat.fi/uutisarkisto/19961002/vapa/961002va10.html
Laskutikku vaikuttaa heti miltei korvaamattomalta.
Itse asiassa laskutikku on siellä suuremman oivalluksen sovellus, logaritmeihin perustuvan laskemisen kelpo apuväline.

The History of Computing
The Slide Rule
The first Slide Rule appeared in 1650 and was the result of a joint effort of two Englishmen Edmund Gunter and the reverend William Oughtred. Oughtred's original slide rule was cylidrical.
An example of the original style of slide rule. A French Artillery officer Amedee Mannheim added the movable double sided cursor, which gave it it's appearance as we know it today. The slide rule was the primary calculator of engineers throughtout the 19th and early 20th centuries. The slide rule is based on Napier's logarithms . It is an analog device as multiplication and subtraction are figured out by physical distance.

The Slide Rule The first Slide Rule appeared in 1650 and was developed by two Englishmen, Edmund Gunter and William Oughtred. The Slide Rule was based on Napier's logarithms and was to become the first analog computer (of the modern ages) since multiplication and subtraction were figured out by physical distance. This invention was dormant until 1850, when a French Artillery officer, Amedee Mannheim, added the movable double-sided "cursor", which gave it the appearance as we know it today.

entered the Ecole Polytechnique in Paris in 1848 at the age of 17. Two years later he went to Metz where he attended the Ecole d'Application. Although slide rules existed before Mannheim's time, invented by Oughtred and Gunter and others, it was Mannheim who standardised the modern version of the slide rule which was in common use until pocket calculators took over a few years ago. It was while he was a student at Metz that the ideas for this slide rule came to Mannheim. I [EFR] purchased a slide rule of the Mannheim type when I was at school and my parents paid 5 pounds for it. That would be the equivalent of perhaps 100 pounds today so the calculator has not only given us a better calculating tool but also a much cheaper one. However, I still have the slide rule and treasure it, while I have thrown out all my early calculators. Mannheim retired from his army post in 1890, having attained the rank of colonel in the engineering corps. He continued teaching at the Ecole Polytechnique until he retired in 1901 at the age of 70.

    The History of Calculating
The History of Calculating is rich in its appearance and can be inspected from many different angles. In this article I will attempt to give a short and informative description of some of the milestones in this History. This article will inspect the non electrical devices only which were to do with computing. I have omitted the chapter about Charles Babbage as this is well described in many current books, and deserves an article by itself.
    The Abacus
The name Abacus derives from the Greek word ABAX meaning table or board covered with dust. The origins of the Abacus are buried deep in the history of mankind. It is known that in its 'modern' form it appeared in China in the 13th century AD. The Chinese Abacus is made of 13 columns with 2 beads on top (heaven) and 5 beads bellow (earth). The Japanese copied the Chinese Abacus around the 17th century AD and adapted it to their more delicate way of thinking. It has 21 columns with 1 bead on top (heaven) and 4 beads below (earth). The Abacus is still taught in the Far East as regular school training, and is used commonly in many places. In 1946 a contest between a Japanese Abacist (Kiyoshu Matzukai) and an Electronic computer was held for 2 days resulting in an unmistakable victory of the Abacist. The third modern form of the Abacus is Russian with 10 beads in 10 arched rows. back to table of contents
