Intelligent Machine Post:
The joke's on Sir James?
Dateline: August 2, 1998 Knock Knock . . . Stanford University's Clifford Nass told the American Association for Artificial Intelligence (AAAI) convention recently that social interaction is a key and often overlooked element of hardware and software design. Machines should be designed to compliment a user on his or her appearance, ask polite questions, and tell the occasional joke. Noting that people respond favorably to compliments and negatively to criticism, Nass said that most messages you get from your computer today are the kind that say "You screwed up; You did terrible." Microsoft's stupid "Fatal Error!" and "Illegal Procedure!"which I remember from my DOS daysspring immediately to mind, and messages that appear when Windows 95 or Word or Excel crash (which they do with notorious regularity) are little improvement. (Sorry to inflict upon you my Microsoft-bashing mode again, but I've had the severe misfortune to be forced to work on a Windows 95 machine for the past two weeks. It has crashedand I mean total lockupat least once every day, and all I've been doing is running

DCAMM Annual Report 1998
FOREWORD This annual report about 1998 contains information on publications, seminars and guests. In addition we have printed a list of the DCAMM reports number 1-612 including the available final references and also a list of the DCAMM S-reports number S1-S84. The report serves mainly as reference and documentation for accomplishes activities. Information on the actual activities are available on our homepage: www.fam.dtu.dk and on the homepages of the cooperating departments of the center. In 1998 the DCAMM Graduate Research School gave 7 advanced courses:
Variational Methods in Applied Mechanics, 12-21 Jan. 1998. Continuum Mechanics, finite Strain Plasticity and Fracture Mechanics, 21-30 Jan. 1998. Computational Rolling, Forming and Welding Mechanics, 15-23 Jun. 1998. Constitutive Modelling of Engineering Materials, 15-23 Jun. 1998. Advanced Topics in Structural Optimization, 25 Jun. - 3 Jul. 1998. Iterative and Finite Element Multigrid Methods, 25 Jun. - 3 Jul. 1998. Experimental Fluid Dynamics and Data Interpretation, 19-28 Aug. 1998. The school was visited by 7 Guestprofessors, 7 Gueststudents and 168 Courseparticipants. An international evaluation of the activities of the school was very positive. Also this year, I thank our international contacts for their support and inspirations.

Extracted by WSK from The Times of London web pages (www.the-times.co.uk) July 20 1998 OBITUARIES
SIR JAMES LIGHTHILL Sir James Lighthill, mathematician and Provost of University College London, 1979-89, died while attempting to swim around Sark on July 17 aged 74. He was born on January 23, 1924.
Twenty-five years ago, James Lighthill became the first person to swim around the Channel Island of Sark, calling it "a most pleasant way to see the scenery". He subsequently repeated the feat five times, but on Friday, nine hours into another attempt and nearing the end of the nine-mile swim, he was found dead in the water. His passion for swimming may have brought him to wide public attention, but it is for his brilliant and wide-ranging contributions to applied mathematics over many years that Lighthill will be remembered. Considered by his peers to be one of the great mathematicians of the century, perhaps even a genius, Lighthill was a pioneer in supersonic aeronautics, in oceanographic studies and astrophysics. He virtually created the field of biofluiddynamics, the study of how animals move through air or water, as well as the study of the fluid mechanics of the cardiovascular system. His ideas touched everything from earthquakes and the boundary currents in the Indian Ocean to the movement of road traffic. He held the senior mathematical chair at Cambridge, and became a leading adviser on government scientific policy. Michael James Lighthill was something of a child prodigy. He won a scholarship from Winchester to Trinity College, Cambridge, when he was just 15, though he did not go up until two years later.

74. Towards More Balanced Inquiry And Response In Psychological Health
The 1986 apology came through the late sir james lighthill, who took over the Lucasianchair in applied mathematics at Cambridge from Paul Dirac in 1969,
http://www.goodshare.org/restore.htm
Towards More Balanced Inquiry and Response in Psychological Health Victoria, May 3, 2002 http://www.goodshare.org/restore.htm The following is directed to those suffering from 'mental illness' and those in the 'healing professions' who may have interest in helping to develop and to participate in a new 'healing' approach that combines the wisdom of native 'healing' traditions with new scientific findings on the fundamentals of living systems that have not yet been assimilated into mainstream psychiatry. This new approach orients to the cultivating and sustaining of psychological health through a coordinated program of self-directed 'healing circle' group therapy and neurofeedback ( N.B. -'Neurofeedback' is training that enables one to get in touch with sub-aware neural responses that one has involuntarily 'conditioned' to 'hold on to' anxious, depressive or obsessive thoughts, and to 'untrain' them so that they will 'let go' and stop 'locking-themselves-in'. Neurofeedback equipment presents the patient's own neural waves to them on a computer screen in front of them and facilitates the patient's interacting with their own thought waves using audio-visual signalling, often in the form of playing games like pacman etc. where certain types of mind-movements (thought-wave patterns) are 'reflected back' to the patient in terms of the audio-visual responses of the neurofeedback equipment. This type of interaction with one's own thought waves allows interaction with thought flows that have developed 'sub-awarely' and that are not accessible to normal past, present and future 'event' based thinking.)
