Seminar Sophus Lie
Seminar Sophus Lie is a joint Seminar of a group of German mathematicians interested in the theory of Lie groups and their wider horizon. It was founded around 1989-90 when, during the Volkskammer Government of the German Democratic Republic in 1989, open contacts between mathematicians in East- and Westgermany became a reality for the first time since 1961. Several mathematicians located at the Technische Hochschule Darmstadt, the University of Erlangen, the University of Greifswald, and the University of Leipzig organized informally the Seminar with financial support by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft and met for the first seminar session at the University of Leipzig in January 1991. The Seminar meets once a semester since that time. Later on groups at the University of Bielefeld, the University of Clausthal, and the University of Agriculture in Wien (Vienna, Austria) joined the seminar. Meetings were held in

A Problem of Sophus Lie Revisited: When and How Can the Equation y'' = f(x,y,y') Be Linearized?
B. Kent Harrison (Brigham Young University) The linearization of ordinary differential equations was a topic investigated by Sophus Lie, using group transformations. In particular, he studied the second order equation given in the title of this abstract and showed that if f(x,y,y') is a cubic in y', the equation can be linearized to the form d^2 Y/dX^2 = 0, where X and Y are some functions of x and y. He did this by assuming the latter equation and finding the conditions on X(x,y) and Y(x,y) which resulted, given the original equation, which conditions restrict the function f to be a cubic. Several authors have recently published on this problem. Given such an f,, however, this proof does not show how to find X(x,y) and Y(x,y) explicitly. This paper will explain how this can be doneat least in principleand some examples will be given, such as application to the Kepler problem for a central force power law. Differential forms are useful in the derivation. Part A of program listing

LIE, Marius Sophus Theorie der Transformations-Gruppen. [offprints from the Archiv för Mathematik og Naturvidenskab], Oslo, Alb. Cammermeyer, 1876-9 5 parts in one vol, 8vo (216 x 140 mm), the first two re-paginated, the last three with original journal pagination; all except the first part with original front wrapper bound in (this being plain for the second part and printed for the last three). Each wrapper inscribed 'Monsieur Halphen', i.e. Georges Henri Halphen (1844-89), in Lie's hand, bound in contemporary black half-morocco and marbled boards, spine lettered in gilt, with Halphen's manuscript list of contents at end, preserved in a slip-case. £4250
First edition of the complete papers of Lie's theory of transformation groups (now known as Lie groups), his epochal discovery of one of the most profound conceptual tools in modern mathematics and mathematical physics. This discovery was first published in these five papers (apart from a brief announcement in the Göttingen Nachrichten). Appearing in an obscure Norwegian journal, it is probable that very few offprints of these papers survive.
Based on his observation that many classical methods of integrating differential equations depend on the fact that the equation is invariant under a 'continuous' family of transformations, Lie conceived around 1869 one of his most important ideas, that of differential invariants. Visiting Berlin in the winter of 1869-70, Lie met Felix Klein and the two began to work together. This continued in Paris the following summer, where excitement had been generated by the publication of Camille Jordan's Traité des substitutions, the first extended exposition of the abstract ideas of group theory put forward by Evariste Galois forty years earlier. In a letter of 1873 to his disciple Adolph Meyer, Lie dated his ideas on transformation groups from his sojourn in Paris; for his part, Klein was led to formulate in 1872 his 'Erlangen Programm' for classifying geometries in terms of the groups of transformations which leave the properties of the geometry invariant.

Lie, Marius Sophus
Norwegian mathematician who provided the foundations for the science of topology in transformation groups known as the Lie groups. He was one of the first mathematicians to emphasize the importance of the notion of groups in geometry.
Lie was born near Bergen and studied at Christiania (now Oslo) and abroad at Berlin and Paris. He was professor at Christiania 1873-86 and 1898-99 and at Leipzig, Germany, 1886-98.
Lie's first great discovery, made in 1870, was that of his contact transformation, which mapped straight lines with spheres and principal tangent curves into curvature lines. In his theory of tangential transformations occurs the particular transformation that makes a sphere correspond to a straight line. By 1873 Lie had begun to investigate transformation groups. In this work on group theory he chose a new space element, the contact element, which is an incidence pair of point and line or of point and hyperplane. This led him to the discovery of Lie groups, one of the basic notions of which is that of infinitesimal transformation.
The Lie integration theorem, which he developed, made it possible to classify partial differential equations in such a way as to make most of the classical methods of solving such equations reducible to a single principle.

Seminar Sophus Lie

Kurzbeschreibung Sophus Lie (1842-1899) is without doubt one of Norways greatest scientific talents. His mathematical works have made him famous around the world no less than Niels Henrik Abel. The terms Lie groups and Lie algebra are today part of the standard mathematical vocabulary. In his comprehensive biography the author Arild Stubhaug let us come close to both the person Sophus Lie and his time. We follow him through childhood at the vicarage in Nodfjordeid, his growing up in Moss, school and studying in Christiania, travelling in Europe and his contacts with the leading mathematicians of his time. The academic and scientific career brought Lie from Christiania to Leipzig as professor, before the attempt to call him back to Norway, when she stood on the threshhold to national sovereignty, was successful. Lie Groups: an exploration
Sophus Lie Dr. Williams' assignment to use various tools to look for items about Lie groups was a very nice case-in-point of the sort of recurrent problem I was saying you'd be faced with no matter what academic or other specialties or interests you end up in. What I want to do here is follow my own process of investigating this subject (about which I knew nothing at all, beyond the supposition that the capitalization of 'Lie' meant that the groups were named after their originator/discoverer). My 'process' is certainly guided by my own past history as a searcher, which includes a familiarity with how to hunt for stuff, what to do with bits I find, and a lot of miscellaneous general knowledge. But then I've been at it [searching for stuff and educating myself] for a long time, and I enjoy the chase as much as the kill. I started at home, where I happen to have Van Nostrand's Encyclopedia (i.e., I started with what was closest, as I advised you to do), and found something to get me started: ...group which is also an analytic manifold in which the group operations, multiplication and formation of the inverse, are analytic...

Even as basic a tool as a biographical dictionary can be useful. The Cambridge Biographical Dictionary [REF CT103.C4] has this brief but trenchant summary: ...His study of contact transformations arising from partial differential equations led him to develop an extensive theory of continuous groups of transformations, now known as Lie groups. This theory has become a central part of 20th-century mathematics and has important applications in quantum theory. [894]

In November of 1998 my first album was self-released. Titled "Paroxysm", it contained songs that had been written as early as 1992.
