Tullio Levi-Civita Nacque: 29 Marzo 1873 a Padova, Veneto, Italia Mori': 29 Dic 1941 a Roma Levi-Civita e' sopratutto noto per il suo lavoro sul calcolo differenziale assoluto, con le sue applicazioni alla teoria della relativita'. Levi-Civita si laureo' all'Universita' di Padova dove uno dei suoi maestri fu Ricci con cui Levi-Civita collaboro' in seguito. Levi-Civita fu nominato alla Cattedra di Meccanica a Padova nel 1898, un posto che conservo' per 20 anni. Nel 1918 ricevette la nomina alla Cattedra di Meccanica a Roma, dove passo' altri 20 anni fino a che perdette il posto a causa delle politiche razziali del governo (egli era ebreo). Levi-Civita era padronissimo della matematica pura; la sua intuizione geometrica era particolarmente forte ed egli la applicava ad una varieta' di problemi di matematica applicata. Uno dei suoi articoli, del 1895, miglioro' la formula di Riemann di contorno integrale della quantita' di numeri primi in un intervallo dato. During Levi-Civita's visit to Kiev in 1935, his wife and former mathematics student, asked Krawtchouk to recommend her a book on Ukrainian history. Krawtchouk suggested a German translation of Hrushevsky 's History of Ukraine. In 1937, Krawtchouk was accused of recommending this book because it was written by the non-Marxist historian and published in a foreign language. Hrushevsky was a renowned Ukrainian historian and the first president of Ukraine during a brief period of independence in 1918. He emigrated to Austria after German troops deposed his government, but returned in 1924. He was elected as a member of the Ukrainian Academy of Sciences, but was exiled to Moscow in the early 1930s for political reasons. In the Fall of 1936, Levi-Civita visited the United States and presented papers at Harvard and Princeton where he met with Einstein. Authorities in fascist Italy removed Levi-Civita from his post at the University of Rome in 1938 because he was of Jewish origin. However, he declined numerous offers of political asylum and remained in Italy until his death in 1941. And with this new tool ready at hand, Einstein could formulate the theory of gravitation only twenty years later. Ricci-Curbastro was born into a wealthy family in the province of Ravenna in Italy, and his father was a well known engineer. Since money was not a problem, Gregorio was taught at home by private tutors, rather than going to an ordinary school. By the time he was ready to attend university at age 16, he was well trained in mathematics and philosophy. The next years were spent at the Universities of Rome and Bologna, until he moved to Pisa to attend Scuola Normale Superiore in 1874. As we remember, Bianchi was here at the same time, studying the same fields as Ricci-Curbastro. In 1875 he was awarded a doctorate for his thesis on differential equations, following up on another paper he had written the year before, On a generalization of Riemann's problem concerning hypergeometric functions After graduation Ricci-Curbastro won a scholarship, which allowed him to study abroad. After some consideration he chose to go to the Technische Hochschule in Munich, Germany, where Klein had been given a chair two years earlier. Although Klein had a distinct influence on him, the main inspiration came from the works of Riemann, Christoffel and Lipschitz.
