From: Nick Kosmadakis ( nkosma@x-treme.gr
Date: Mon May 29 2000 - 10:55:36 EDT Dear all,
I heard that in the recent past (when I was a university student in the
U.K., about three years ago) there was a list related to classics and
ancient studies, called Leucippus. This list was run by the university of
Thrace, Greece.
I looked up for it in Maria Pantelia's web site, where I found all the
details for it, how to subscribe etc.
Still, when I applied to become a member of this list, I was informed that
the address was no longer valid Is there anyone who knows anything about this list, who could give me the right address? Thanx in advance, Nick St. Kosmadakis e-mail: nkosma@x-treme.gr Date view Thread view Subject view ... From: David Meadows ( dmeadows@idirect.com
Date: Tue May 30 2000 - 22:53:44 EDT I'm not sure what MP has at her site, but if you look at my description of
the list:
http://web.idirect.com/~atrium/bibliotheca/discussion/leucippus.html

you can double check (barring that, I have there the address of what I
believe to be the listowner).
For what it's worth, it's a very low traffic list (I haven't seen anything
from it in ages)and for all I know it might have died in the past year.
This and other lists are listed on my huge list:
http://web.idirect.com/~atrium/bibliotheca/discussion.html
which I will be updating in the very near future (I've got close to 50 new lists/clubs/etc. to add), but you'll hear about that in more detail when The Atrium moves to www.atrium-media.com (after report cards are done!) regards

Iamblichus Isocrates Leucippus
The originator of the atomic theory was a contemporary of Socrates. His birthplace was variously reported as Elea, Miletus, and Abdera, but these are more likely associations based on his philosophical interests rather than accurate reports. The fact is little is known about his life. Two works are often attributed to him: The Great World System or ( MEGAS DIAKOSMOS ) and On Mind . It is probably piontless to try to distinguish his contributions to atomism from those of his pupil Democritus , but there is little question that the fundamental outlines of the theory were his invention.

The material on this page is mostly taken from http://dbhs.wvusd.k12.ca.us . Page references are to S. Sambursky (1956) "The Physical World of the Greeks" Princeton University Press. ISBN 0-691-02411-1. Around 440 BC, Leucippus of Miletus originated the atom concept. He and his pupil, Democritus (c460-371 BC) of Abdera, refined and extended it in future years. There are five major points to their atomic idea. Almost all of the original writings of Leucippus and Democritus are lost. About the only sources we have for their atomistic ideas are found in quotations of other writers. Democritus (dî-mòk´rî-tes), c.460-c.370 B.C., Greek philosopher. His atomic theory of the nature of the physical world, known to us through ARISTOTLE's writings, was the most scientific theory proposed up to his time. He held that all living things are composed of tiny indivisible particles, called atoms, and that their constant motion explains the creation of the universe. Aristotle,c. 384-322 B.C., A pupil of Plato, the tutor of Alexander the Great, and the author of works on logic, metaphysics, ethics, natural sciences, politics, and poetics, he profoundly influenced Western thought. The idea of the atom was strongly opposed by Aristotle and others. Because of this, the atom receeded into the background. Although there is a fairly continuous pattern of atomistic thought through the ages, only a relative few scholars gave it much thought.

Lamentation : Passionate expression of grief, dirge Lattice : The order of crystalline solids - a regular order. Law : A rule that never changes and can be proven. See Theory Leibniz's Question of truth:
Leibniz divided Truth into two categories: Truths of reason (Rationalist) and truths of fact (Empiricist).
Truths of reason were known by logic (he called them Tautologies), where the predicate repeats what is already contained in the subject. Truths of Reason are self-evident truths and their analytic propositions. Math falls under this category, which is essentially analytic.
Truths of fact are known by experience, where opposites can be considered without contradiction. "Mary exists", for example, can only be known after the experience of her existing. This knowledge depends on a posteriori knowledge (after the fact, sense knowledge). In this example, the concept Mary doesn't necessarily suggest her existence, which must be observed to be determined. This is a synthetic method.

Presocratic Philosophers Resources on the ancient Greeks who introduced the world to philosophy. Anaxagoras
Anaxagoras is credited with bringing philosophy, the study of knowledge, to Athens when he moved there in 480 B.C. Anaximander Anaximander may have written the first philosophical treatise in Greece and was a student or companion of Thales. Fragments and passages about him by other ancient writers. Anaximenes Anaximenes was a pupil of Anaximander who believed the underlying principle or arche was air and distinguished planets from stars. The Eleatic School About's Philosophy Guide introduces the Eleatic School of philosophy to which Zeno, Parmenides and Melissus belonged. It rejected sense experience as a plausible way to the truth, arguing for more rigid mathematical standards of clarity and necessity.
