Leucippus and Democritus: atomist philosophers
1 October 2001 Scribes: Lukas Tagalakis and Jamieson Hunter These minutes were spoken on 3 October; for another version, go to the unspoken minutes Monday's lecture concentrated on the teachings of the early atomist philosophers Leucippus and Democritus. These philosophers, both from Abdera, are often mentioned together. Leucippus is believed to be the originator of Atomist thought, which Democritus, with much ambition, expanded and carried through in detail. Epicurus, a contemporary of Democritus, further expanded the atomic theory into a complex system. There exists one or two pieces of evidence that Epicuras denied that Leucippus even existed. However scholars, including professor Hutchinson, have enough evidence to suggest that he did exist and that he was crucial in the development of the atomic theory. Professor Hutchinson described these attacks by Epicurus as polemical in nature. A student asked what the word polemical meant and professor Hutchinson said that it is derived from the Greek word polemos

Leucippus and Democritus: atomist philosophers
1 October 2001 Scribes: Ruth Lancashire and Mark Brown These minutes were not spoken; for another version, go to the spoken minutes polemes meaning war or battle. Leucippus was familiar with the work of Zeno, who had championed Parmendian principles, and based his system on natural philosophy so that his work would survive attacks from his counterpart. Professor Hutchinson then told the class that Leucippus had taken a "weird direction" by postulating an unsubdividable element which he called atoma. His hypothesis was that these little bits of being, or atoma, made up a Parmendian universe. This universe was permanent, uncreated, undestroyed and indestructible. All of reality is made up of these atomos. Atomic Theory satisfies Parmendian theory. The Atomists theory suggests that atoms come in varies shapes and sizes, which both philosophers stated were the only properties. These atoms did not posses secondary properties such as colour, smell, weight, or mass, and these properties arose from the complex formed by the atoms. Epicures, on the other hand, disagreed with the two original philosophers and said that the atoms also had weight. Leucippus and Democritus accepted plurality in the world but believed that things such as human beings were not plural. Origins of Species.

Early Greek Philosophy Leucippus of Miletus John Burnet 171. Leucippus and Democritus We have seen (§§ ) that the school of Miletus did not come to an end with Anaximenes , and it is a striking fact that the man who gave the most complete answer to the question first asked by Thales was a Milesian. It is true that the very existence of Leucippus has been called in question. Epicurus is reported to have said there never was such a philosopher, and the same thing has been maintained in quite recent times. On the other hand, Aristotle and Theophrastus certainly made him the originator of the atomic theory, and they can hardly have been mistaken on such a point. Aristotle was specially interested in Democritus , and his native Stageirus is not very far from Abdera , the seat of the Atomist school. The question is intimately bound up with that of the date of Democritus , who said that he himself was a young man in the old age of Anaxagoras , a statement which makes it unlikely that he founded his school at Abdera much before 420 B.C., the date given by
