FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE 500 Years After It Was Designed, Leonardo da Vinci's Bridge Goes UP! Norwegian artist, Vebjørn Sand, had a vision. He would build the "Golden Horn" bridge Leonardo da Vinci designed in 1502 but never built. On October 31, 2001, the ambitious project was unveiled spanning E-18, the highway between Oslo, Norway and Sweden in the township of Ås. It will stand as an historical monument to both the master artist of the Renaissance and the persistence of Norway's hottest contemporary artist. The unveiling of the Leonardo Bridge was presided over by Norway's Queen Sonja and attended by a large crowd braving stormy weather to witness the event. The project has intrigued architects for 40 years since its rediscovery in a set of Leonardo's documents in the late 1950's. In 1995, Vebjørn Sand, a painter also famous in Norway for his public projects, saw an exhibition of Leonardo's project designs including a tiny drawing of a sweeping pressed-bow bridge. He felt he was unearthing a lost treasure. Permanently smitten with the "eternal beauty" of the design, he took the idea of building the bridge immediately to the Norwegian Transportation Ministry. It took many years working with various architects and engineers to come up with a workable plan.
Vebjørn Sand hopes to build a Leonardo-style bridge on every continent. Sand sees the traditions of the Renaissance reinvigorating contemporary public art. Says Sand, "This (kind of) collaboration gives us insight into the function of the artist in public space. When (the artist), engineers, architects, businessmen and governmental departments work towards the same artistic goal, it creates a synergy in many different environments."

The Anatomical Drawings of Leonardo da Vinci by: R. Kevin Alvey Of all the men who contributed to the revival of artistic and intellectual achievement that was to be called the Renaissance, none were more remarkable than Leonardo da Vinci. Recognized now as the "father" of the High Renaissance, he was a master of any discipline in which he practiced. Others may have equaled him as an artist, but nobody else of his time possessed in such a high degree the curiosity about the physical world which is the foundation of modern science, combined with mastery in the arts of painting, drawing, sculpture, and even architecture ( Keele and Blunt, 9 ). While it is the paintings of Leonardo that have brought him fame over the years, the full range of his talent can best be seen in his drawings. His many drawings and notes, at least the ones that have survived, have become the basis for the modern scientific illustration, especially important in the field of anatomy. Leonardo's anatomical studies, while great works of art in themselves, were used not only as tools to aid in his artistic understanding of the human form, but also as a means of scientific exploration of human functions. Leonardo da Vinci was born on April 15, 1452, in the town of Vinci, Italy. He was the illegitimate son of Ser Piero da Vinci, a public notary, and a young peasant girl named Caterina, about whom little is known. From a very early age, Leonardo is said to have shown exceptional ability in geometry, music, and artistic expression (

Innovative Engineers of Renaissance - Leonardo Leonardo Leonardo da Vinci is celebrated as the inventor of extraordinary machines and mechanical devices that entered the common heritage of technical culture only several centuries after his death.
However, a close examination of the history of technology from the late fourteenth century to the end of the fifteenth century reveals that the "Leonardo phenomenon" was the logical outcome of a development of engineering and technical skills to which other talented figures contributed as well.

Leonardo da Vinci
was born in April 15, 1452 in Vinci, Italy. Leonardo's mastery in art, science and engineering have earned him a place among the most prolific geniuses of history. He was one of the most important artists of the Italian Renaissance, a period when the arts and sciences flourished. At age 17, Leonardo and his father moved to Florence, where he apprenticed to Verrocchio. His brilliance soon eclipsed that of his master. In 1472 Leonardo became a member of the painter's guild of Florence, where he had contact with other great Florentine artists including Michelangelo Buonarroti In 1481 Leonardo left Florence for Milan to offer his service to the local Duke. During this period he painted the Virgin of the Rocks and the Last Supper . In 1499 Leonardo left Milan, traveling through Mantua, to the court of Isabella d'Este; to Venice, where he consulted on architecture from 1495 to 1499; and in 1502 and 1503 was military engineer for Cesare Borgia. After his service to the Borgias, Leonardo returned to Florence. It was during the period between 1503 and 1506, while working primarily in Florence, that he had his greatest following and painted such classics as the "Mona Lisa." Leonardo left Florence for Milan in 1506, although he returned in 1507-8 to fight for his inheritance from his Uncle. In 1509 he returned to Milan and devoted much of his time to scientific studies, and to engineering projects such as channeling the course of the Adda river. In 1512 Leonardo left Milan again, and from 1513 to 1516 was in Rome under the protection of Giuliano de Medici, the brother of Pope Leo X. Here Leonardo came into contact with Michelangelo, and another young rival, Raphael.

LEONARDO DA VINCI
Painter and Sculptor of Florence
THE heavens often rain down the richest gifts on human beings,
naturally, but sometimes with lavish abundance bestow upon a single
individual beauty, grace and ability, so that, whatever he does, every
action is so divine that he distances all other men, and clearly
displays how his genius is the gift of God and not an acquirement of
human art. Men saw this in Leonardo da Vinci, whose personal beauty
could not be exaggerated, whose every movement was grace itself and
whose abilities were so extraordinary that he could readily solve
every difficulty. He possessed great personal strength, combined with dexterity, and a spirit and courage invariably royal and magnanimous, and the fame of his name so spread abroad that, not only was he valued in his own day, but his renown has greatly increased since his death. This marvellous and divine Leonardo was the son of Piero da Vinci. He would have made great profit in learning had he not been so capricious and fickle, for he began to learn many things and then gave

Dr. N. Ventor, scientist-extraordinaire and inventor of a time machine, is also a big fan of Leonardo da Vinci. To thank you and your friend Carmine Chameleon for testing her time machine, she is showing you her collection of Leonardo's works. "This is one of Leonardo da Vinci's paintings," says Dr. Ventor. "He was one of the masters of the Renaissance "What's happening to the portrait!" exclaims Dr. Ventor. "It's disappeared and just left a blank canvas! Someone must have used my time machine! They've gone back and meddled in time! "Oh no!" exclaims Carmine. "Any changes in the past will change the present disappear right now! The three of you run to the time machine in the laboratory. "Look!" says Carmine. "The date's set to 1505 A.D. And the location is Leonardo da Vinci's workshop in Italy!" Dr. Ventor turns to you. "Now listen carefully, there's no time to spare! You and Carmine must follow the culprit back in time."
"If you find anything strange, bring it back in this bag. Even the smallest change might alter history forever!"
"Take this handbook. It should answer any questions about Leonardo and the Renaissance."

leonardo da vinci's last years at the court of the French King in the Loire Valley, France are described. Photographs are included on each page.
http://geocities.com/leonardo_in_france/
This site tells the story of the last few years of the life of Leonardo da Vinci spent in France at the town of Amboise in the Loire Valley. These were among the happiest years of his life.
The site shows images of the house where Leonardo lived during this time and also photos of the Royal Castle at Amboise and of the town.
Leonardo died at Amboise on 2 May 1519. During the Revolution the church where he was buried was destroyed and it is not completely certain where his remains now lie. However, some believe that his bones were recovered and that they are now located in the Chapel of St Hubert at Amboise.
The site also shows the town of Amboise as it is today - a major centre of tourism in the region. Finally, the site provides details on books for sale on the subject of Leonardo and the Renaissance plus travel books on France and of the Loire.
"Celestial influences may shower extraordinary gifts on certain human beings, which is an effect of nature; but there is something supernatural in the accumulation in one individual of so much beauty, grace and might."

Mona Lisa. In 1472, when Leonardo was twenty years old and having paid his guild fees, his name was officially inscribed on the roll of the Guild of St. Luke as a painter. While Leonardo was now fully qualified according to guild regulations and legally entitled to establish his own workshop, it seems he chose to remain at least four more years with his old teacher, Andrea del Verrocchio. Leonardo was twenty years old when it appears Lorenzo de Medici sent him to Milan to present Il Moro with the lyre . Leonardo was unsurpassed as a musician on this instrument and was evidently greeted with great applause when he played a lyre In about 1500 Leonardo produced his first designs for the now famous flying machine the scythed chariot and the armored car mechanical bows capable of hurling flaming missiles over a great distance. On land he envisioned military bridges, forts, and defensive works, while at sea he designed assault craft, floating battering rams, diving suits, and a mysterious scheme for destroying enemy ships by piercing them under the water line.
